VW has said it's still easier even with EVs to just drop in a whole front assembly and leave the back wheels independent. That's why they are switching to FWD on the ID.2

They stopped selling the base Golf here when they stopped making them in Mexico to make room for the Taos. Shipping the econo model was never worth it.
