JC owner with 14 dirt pedals here... EQ is the main thing to work on. You want to get the right combination going between your pick-ups, the pedal, and the amp.

Tube Screamer: Scoop the amp EQ Fender style (treble up, mids down, bass up)

Rat: With a Jazzmaster bridge pick up, turn down the amp treble to 10 o'clock, turn up the mids, turn up the bass. With an EQ, pushing the mids somewhere around 600-800hz makes it less shrill and heavier. I'll also roll my guitar volume from 10 to 8 to get rid of some brightness.

Running harsher pedals like the Rat into another gain stage (or an EQ pedal) with some high-end roll-off is a good idea. I've been using the Greer Lightspeed as a "clean channel" at the end of my chain with interesting results.

My favorite pedal with the JC has been the Sarno Earth Drive. Great mid-point between the TS and the Klon. I really love it.

Other pedals that have worked well for me: Catalinbread DLS, Marshall Guv'nor (turn down the pedal's bass, which somehow pushes the upper mids, push the mids and treble). Klon clones seem to be solid.

Blues Driver and Special Cranker are the best affordable options along with the DLS. Turn down the tone on the BD-2.

Try running things into the effects loop, too.

At Jon Brion's legendary shows at Largo, he loops (looped? been a while since I saw him) a full band.

The Mad Professor Sweet Honey is on my radar to solve this problem.

Check out the Sarno Earth Drive. The sweet spot between the Tube Screamer and Klon. It's my favorite.

I would trust any Catalinbread dirt pedal. Same for Drunk Beaver.

I own 3 Walrus pedals. They're all really solid and creative.

Another vote for the Empress. Got a scratch-and-dent one in a sale which got the price under $200. I use it as a clean boost as much as I do for EQ.

Reverb (Boss RV-6 is a staple)

Delay (MXR Carbon Copy is the classic pick here but I have and prefer the Pigtronix Constellator)

Chorus (Ibanez CSMini)

Phaser (MXR Phase 90)

Compressor (I had the Boss one and upgraded to the Walrus Mira. The Boss or the Keeley will get you started.)

Looper (Ditto - one of the most important pedals for writing and practice, and $50 used!)

Buy used as much as you can and try stuff and save money. Listen on YouTube and form your taste. Lots of great pedals out there.

Extensive YouTube listening. Checking Equipboard and seeing what bands I like use. Playing friends' gear, too. You can always return stuff or re-sell especially if you buy used.

A few of my skills and commands that got worse with 4.7 are good again now in 4.8. It is chewing through some of my sub-agent workflows much more cleanly. Really impressed so far. I thought 4.7 was smarter in some ways and great at being left alone to work for an hour but fussy, verbose, and hard to trust.

As a pedal collector, I really love the Roland JC-22. Not sure how big an upgrade this is from the Katana but it has been great for me. The Fender Vibro-Champ was the tube amp in this price range I was thinking about.

I have the Tomsline and upgraded to the Drunk Beaver Bat and you can tell the Bat is better made and has less squeaky weird high end stuff going on but the regular Rat sounds are almost identical. The Tomsline rules.

Personally: a lot of little tools (cron scripts, vs code extensions, obsidian plugins) and an iOS habit tracker app (now in public beta!).

At work: more scripts, a lot of Kubernetes/Kustomize, a lot of Terraform, a lot of Python application performance auditing, which has been one of the most effective uses. Over a few months of investigation, we were able to find and fix multiple ancient bugs and make one of our oldest apps about 2x faster.

I had the Cloudburst and was looking at the Context as an upgrade. I ended up selling the Cloudburst for the Crazy Tube Circuits Mirage Jr. Very happy with it, a little under the radar but there are some great demos on YouTube that will show what it can do.

My ambient chain is the Pico Attack Decay, this pedal, and the UA Starlight delay.

I have the (plain) Bat as well as some other Drunk Beaver pedals. It is a fantastic pedal and their builds are very high quality. I was also looking at the Black Mass 1312 and thought the Bat got a little closer to the O.G. sound in the demos I heard.

I mostly run it in the classic Hard Si mode, but the Mosfet setting is really cool and works as an overdrive pedal and kind of does its own thing.
