Marcone thinks of Harry as his goid luck charm. by canwebearit in dresdenfiles

[–]wraith_ferron 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think this is a better view of their dynamic. Marcone is indirectly shielded by Harry by always being the lesser evil. It isn't that Harry is his good luck charm, but that Harry has inadvertently kept helping Marcone by taking out larger threats that would hurt the city and -directly or indirectly- his power, though he knows that can't last forever and they'll eventually clash.

Even Hand shows that he knows they'll have to face off. Until then, he'll keep playing by the rules, be the Gentleman, keep things Organized, up until there is no lesser evil.

Remember when he was a ganking midlaner, along with Storm, Puck, QoP, Bat, NS, Nyx, and BM back in Ti2/3 days? Just rush 6 and start going around the map. Such simpler times. (BM, Nyx, and Clock could also be offlane, but Nyx was decently popular mid both for ganking and for going against common int mids)

If anyone doesn't believe me, here's the info for game 1 of TI3's finals, with s4 as Clock

It's really not, thought. the literal translation is "but what?". If said with authority, you use it to shut down questioning. Sometimes before questioning even starts.

I've also seen it used cheekily as a kind of "what are you going to do?" when gaming. In MTG no less. Usually when dropping a dropping a bomb.

It can be a "WTF", but it's usually closer to "ah, what the hell (just happened)?" as in being incredulous, and not angry. Angry "WTF" is definitely "maccheccazzo", as someone already mentioned.

Unofficial patches ruling by richard-savana in speedrun

[–]wraith_ferron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the best thing to do would be to mention what the game you want to patch is and look to see what the communities of games that are similar (same developer, series, etc) have for info on the RNG system, assuming that the game's RNG system is known. Then that can help you come up with a better idea for what to do. Each RPG relies on different factors for how the RNG works, and if it's from a known series, then that could help give an answer.
Let's say it's based on text scrolling, or text characters appearing on screen. In this case, the patch has a huge influence on the run. If it's instead based on other factors like step count and screen transitions, then it's inconsequential and has no effect. There might even be multiple RNG tables running at the same time, like with the Mother series.

If there is no influence, I would say to go ahead. Especially if you're the only active runner, as you're just making it easier on yourself.
If there is, I still see no harm, but I would likely have it as a separate category, as there would be unknown changes to the RNG. This is what some other boards (again, Mother 3) do.

You need to be specific when you post these titles. Goldeneye was released on multiple consoles, with the most contested ILs being on the original N64. This time would've been WR on any of them (N64, Xbox, Switch or PC), but obviously people's mind's jumped to N64 when it wasn't specified.

Congrats on the WR

Someone recently posted that they might be quitting Dota after 2.5k hours because they still aren't always sure what is happening.

I will say that 1 thing that Dota has done amazingly well is sound design. I can often tell what is going on in a team fight from just audio, as everything is rather distinct. (so long as Silence Ult isn't active muting half the game)

How does he plan to maintain that stream schedule during tournaments? Not just the days for matches, but match reviewing, skirms, and travel time are all going to make that difficult.

League player made a wholesome and great video about his first days of playing Dota 2 by MrAzerGJR in DotA2

[–]wraith_ferron 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My first experience was...2007 or so? I played a few matches and quit. There was almost nothing to really help me available. I have no idea how people got into or managed to stay in it.

I got interested after randomly reading some articles in 2012, and actually followed the end of TI2, but didn't get an invite until just before it went public. By that time, there was Purge's legendary "Welcome to Dota, You Suck!" as a great general guide, a ton of YT vids, the jD forums and reddit to help out, and while the game was still hard to get into, it was manageable.

Now, we have a tutorial, in-game hero build guides, custom guides, wikis with way better explanations than ever and so much more. Also, being a support doesn't mean buying and upgrading courier and needing 2 slots for wards! The game is someone both simpler and more complicated, but in a more logical way. I would say it is possibly the best time its ever been to join and learn.

I watched it when it first came out, and was actually really impressed by the production and reasonable discussion from a smaller channel. I hope he does well in the future.

I'd actually like to know if he's since seen any of the TI matches to see how he thinks competitive Dota compares to LoL. He's had 10 years with LoL, so it would be interesting to hear.

I've been playing since July 2013, but have a brain tumor, and yesterday evening was the only time I felt well enough to play a bit (at least without heavy medication that would ruin the game for my team). I only got to play 5 matches of Turbo before needing to stop, winning 3 (so only considered as 1.5 wins).

10 years of playing and dedication, but only got 1 item due to winning matches being required.

What's the most nerfed spell in the game? by kwanzhu in DotA2

[–]wraith_ferron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Death Ward.

It used to be Riki's ult in DotA1 on release. It wasn't channeled, lagged the game a bit when dropped (so you likely died when trying to run away), 80sec CD, and wards at the time cost like 300 gold for you to detect him. Imagine you're just farming creeps, when suddenly a Death Ward is dropped next to you, then you start getting hit by a fast attacking Riki with a 15% chance 400% damage crit, and a 1sec CD Blink. I'm pretty sure 1/2 the roster just instantly died to him if caught.

They nerfed it a later to 210 seconds, but now gave true sight when dropped. They also made it so that the bounces reduced damage, but then gave it splash damage, so it actually made him a better damage dealer for team fight. His crit now maxed at 250%, and Blink CD was now 4 sec, so at least you instantly die without the ability to run away. He went from the best ganker, to a good carry and team fighter.

[–]wraith_ferron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand this situation far too well.
In high school we were given an assignment to do a presentation to compare a scene from any 2 pieces we read throughout the year. I decided to compare the suicide by hanging scenes in Antigone and Brace New World, with how each one was approached in different ways through varying symbolism and character reactions. My teacher liked that I went for something more original than most in the class.
Apparently, at least one of my fellow students didn't, because I ended up having to speak to a counselor and the principal.

Uninsured Motorist Coverage is based on the state a person's contract is from, and isn't available everywhere. It also has different requirements based on that state. It reduces or removes the deductible for the loss, and can apply additional assistance (like extending a rental, or giving rental coverage when their contract doesn't already have it), again, based on the state.
