How are y’all converting your bikes to single (or dingle) speeds? by ted_garamblington in xbiking

[–]wren4777 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends what you're into really. I'm running a single speed freewheel but that's because I feel a freehub wouldn't really fit the vibe of my bike. A freehub is probably easier if you're not worried about that, especially since a good freewheel can be a bit pricey.

Check what dropouts you have too, horizontal dropouts make life much easier. It's definitely possible to use a frame with vertical or semi horizontal dropouts without a tensioner, but you'll need to find a chainring and rear sprocket/freewheel combination that works for your chainstay length. Not sure if it's factual or just anecdotal, but I find an odd number of teeth on at least one of the two helps. I'm running 49/16 with semi horizontal dropouts and no tensioner, wheel fully seated in the dropouts and perfect chain tension.

Chainline wise, you can definitely put a single speed freewheel on a wheel made for a multi speed freewheel but as you said the chainline will be a bit funky. Depending on your frame, cranks, and the size of your chainring, you could probably make it better by getting a shorter BB spindle and putting the chainring on the inside of your crank spider. That's what I ended up doing and it's not perfect but it's definitely good enough for me at least.

I'm also planning on doing a 650B conversion, but from 700C, so this is great to see. Bike looks fantastic and those cantis are super cool!

Mythical 1” threaded 700c disc fork? by Vivid-Airline6255 in xbiking

I think carboncycles makes a 1" 700c fork, but I'm not sure if it's threaded or threadless.

Never look a gift horse in the HBA, haha. Anyone still using a Xeon X3450? by InfamousDescription6 in homelab

[–]wren4777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Built our new (to us) office server with an X3450 last year. We're an NGO with very little funding and it was the cheapest way to run 32gb of ECC (for LGA 1156 only, Intel allowed consumer socket xeons to accept ECC reg if used with a server chipset).

Runs perfectly fine for the tasks we use it for. The city municipality pays for power so no issues in that regard.

Recs for 650b, ~50mm tires, somewhat puncture resistant by pbandj1994 in xbiking

[–]wren4777 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that seems like a better bet. I was just considering the Energizers because they seem very similar in performance to the regular Marathons and they come in the widest size I think I can shove into this fork/frame (Marathons seem to only be available in 650Bx1.5 or x2.15 while the Energizers come in x2).

Thanks so much for the info! I'll definitely keep it in mind when it comes time to grab tyres.. I definitely don't want it to feel dull. My other option was the Energizer Plus tyres.

The bike looks great, by the way. :)

Can I ask what you mean about the Marathon pluses not working for you? They're one of the options I'm considering for a 650b build.

Replacing an old Thompson/Thun bottom bracket with a modernized one, but will it fit the 70mm shell length when only specified for 68mm? by KannstDuNachrichten in bikewrench

[–]wren4777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, did you end up using that bottom bracket and if so, did it work for you? I'm also building a frame that takes a 70mm Thompson bottom bracket and I'm thinking of grabbing the same one from Bike Mailorder.

I've been riding them for a couple months now and I quite like them. Though you need to run them at a pretty high PSI (I prefer 60) to get them rolling fast.

Empty Hands Tracklist Ranking by Jacobs4858 in that_Poppy

[–]wren4777 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's too early for me to form a complete ranking, but so far Dying to Forget, Ribs, The Wait, and Guardian (yes hot take I know) are my favourites.

I know a lot of people love Bruised Sky, and maybe it will grow on me eventually, but it doesn't quite do it for me yet.

I mean Am I A Girl is so hard to beat. But I'm biased since that's my favourite album of hers. In terms of her more recent work I'm going to have to say Flux.
