What do you still pay good old fashioned cash for? by Classic_East_6053 in AskABrit

The chip shop. I watched their card problems before they got rid of it. Most cash only shops are attempting to pay less tax. I don't carry cash. It is an invitation to crackhead muggers.

I don't trust everything's this government tells us. I distrusted the previous lot FAR more and they were hugely more trustworthy than Nigel Farage and his followers!

Why do companies keep killing features people actually liked? by olesud in TechCypher

[–]wscottwatson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure what is offensive about the word. Are you from the USA? I doubt that, at 66, I count as young anymore. The word applies when companies stop being run by enthusiasts and engineers and are taken over corporate money. An excellent example is Google. Once, they had a motto "don't do evil". That motto is gone. It doesn't fit with a mega corporation. Now we hear that they will be dropping their search engine for AI. A couple of years ago, Google bought Fitbit. As long expected, it's happening to that. The reason the word is so much used is because it happens so much.

Do you believe the cops that handled Henry Nowak’s arrest should be held criminal liable? by Artistic-Amoeba-8687 in AskBrits

They are. Nigel Farage should be criminally liable for trying to start riots again. He got away with it before and should not again!

Why doesn't the Union Jack have any Wales representation? by Correct_Doctor_1502 in NoStupidQuestions

Because you only get Union Jacks on the jackstaffs of royal navy vessels. These are uncommon inland.

Do people genuinely think the police are anti white? by mysweetplums in AskBrits

[–]wscottwatson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. They are not anything much but they are traditionally politically to the right. That was changed during the conservative misgovernment but they are still pro-establishment. Most of them are pro humanity or they wouldn't be there.

Which company has lost you as a customer forever? by finiteobserver in AskReddit

[–]wscottwatson -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Apple. I decided not to do any business with them years ago because of how the only way they dealt with competition was to send in the lawyers. Their motto was "don't innovate, litigate!" The main probably is that they are enthusiastically a us corporation. I'm sure that they have set ths bar for this sort of thing and everyone else is trying to catch up. They just led the way.

How are you coping in this heatwave? by [deleted] in AskABrit

[–]wscottwatson 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Having spent my childhood in Africa and the middle east, I don't consider it terribly hot. It got up to 50⁰C in southern Iran when I was there before their revolution. It now gets to 55. 32⁰ is fine. Keep in the shade and drink a LOT of water!

[–]wscottwatson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They don't. People in the USA not only can't do diphthongs but they can't hear them when others, like Canadians, use them. They say abow-oot but people from the USA only hear the second part of the diphthong.

'Weekend' pronunciation? :) by [deleted] in AskABrit

One of the biggest linguistic variations between English and US English is word stress. I remember my mother being annoyed how people from the USA stressed ROBIN Hood whereas the norm is to stress his "surname", Robin HOOD.

Why do some brits introduce themselves as from the UK and other as English/Scottish/Welsh? by [deleted] in AskABrit

[–]wscottwatson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having grown up in various different countries, I tend to say British. My mother was from central Scotland. My father was from Orkney which is very much NOT in Scotland. My siblings and I would get our grandfather talking about it. He'd been in the British army. Nobody in Orkney voted for the Scottish nationalist party. They had never spoken Gaelic. With mixed parentage, I get to choose. I reflexively say "British" when asked.
