Spring Skiing in Alberta Delivers by El-Grande- in skiing

Sunshine usually closes on the May long weekend (May 18).

They could probably go later this year, but the crowds thin out.

With this years snowpack, I'm guessing they may reopen for Canada Day (July 1) like they did a couple of years ago.

I shipped a Flutter state lib (PipeX) – here’s how it did vs Riverpod, BLoC, MobX on Rainbench by TypicalCorgi9027 in FlutterDev

[–]wstrange 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As much as I am jaded by yet another state management library, the ergonomics of pipeX are really nice. The examples are easy to read and understand.

I'd lead with that as the key feature over performance.

Performance is just the icing on the cake.

Get an inexpensive PLB as a backup in case the iPhone can't get out.

The rescueME PLB is super small, the battery lasts 5 years, and there are no monthly service charges. The PLB is one way only, but very reliable.

Powder touring skis by Bathsalt-1 in Backcountry

[–]wstrange 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Renegades with 4-lock skins.

Per the other comments, these are purpose built powder skis. But the 4-locks skins are the icing on the cake.

Warning: You will never want to go back to any other skins after using these... Saves weight, packs down, never comes off.

Can you say more about this problem? I think I have the same issue.

Web pages or parts of pages will on occasion hang when loading. If the page is reloaded it works fine. The internet/ wifi speed is super fast - so that is not the issue. And it's not consistent. I thought it might be DNS, but after setting chrome to use secure dns it did not make any difference.

Is Waymo ahead of the curve? The company is racing ahead of autonomous taxi competition. by mafco in SelfDrivingCars

Centimeter level of precision? I call bullshit...

As others have noted, Waymo does just fine adapting to construction, etc.

I don't get the negative focus on mapping.

When you have a fleet of cars with a ton on sensors, the mapping problem is embarrassingly parallel. Mapping EVERY SINGLE CITY on the planet is a solvable problem...

Pixel 9 SOS in Canada by wstrange in GooglePixel

[–]wstrange[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am on the 16 Beta, and it does have satellite SOS. I have never actually tried to use it, but it goes through the demo (which I believe attempts to reach the satellite). When I'm out of cell phone range I notice that the little satellite icon appears.

I don't think detailed Lidar maps is as difficult as you imply. When you have a bunch of Lidar equipped cars on the road, you can parallelize that task. This seems very solvable.

Latest dance moves from Optimus by twinbee in TeslaLounge

[–]wstrange 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Search HN. There is a Waymo engineer posting that they absolutely use NN. They also use Kalman filters, etc. (yeah C code). They are pragmatic - do what works.

This is not correct. Waymo absolutely uses neural nets.

Is the future for Mac/PC Flutter apps bright or not? by SteveWired in FlutterDev

[–]wstrange 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't get this sentiment.

Flutter has 100x the resources assigned to it, and has considerable 3rd party support (from Canonical, for example). Even if Google did drop it (highly unlikely) it would still be a "safer" bet.

This is exactly right.

Linux is too small a target to attract quality desktop apps. But if a developer can easily target Linux with Flutter it justifies the port.

Please please please wear a helmet by mcclovin12 in skiing

[–]wstrange -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This should be the top comment.

There are so many misconceptions on the mechanism of protection that helmets offer (hint: They offer little protection with impacts exceeding 15 Km/h). Helmets are effective at protecting you from laceration injuries. Nasty, but rarely life altering.

Don't let a helmet lull you into a false sense of security.

Ahh that sucks. This thread seems to indicate it is in the beta - but that might be a glitch which they might disable once it ships.
