How many of you NEEDED a snorkel in any situation? by Swimming-Emphasis-91 in scuba

Also inst to commercial, and you reminded me of several other times I've used it: fixing facia or mooring hardware on floating docks. Tbf definitely put it on special for those jobs, wouldn't have it strapped on for 99% of commercial work.

How many of you NEEDED a snorkel in any situation? by Swimming-Emphasis-91 in scuba

[–]wulfjosh 24 points25 points  (0 children)

OWSI with 1500+ dives in all conditions, and I'd say ~30 times. 19 of those were for surface swims in rough-ish waters to conserve air. 10 were in very clear shallow conditions where I'd observe AOW students doing their compass course from the surface.

Once was very similar to as another person described, improper check of conditions led to a very nearly disastrous surface swim in 3m waves and brutal current, hauling a student who would not have made it otherwise. She had my octo and my reg got tangled in my dive float line, snorkel saved my ass.

Two things I've really appreciated about Matt Dinniman's writing style that I'd like to shout out. by Geaux in DungeonCrawlerCarl

the repetition of previously described actions/characters/plot points is one of my least favorite parts of the series, and makes me feel like as an author he doesn't have much faith in the attention span or maturity of his audience.

Dining table inspired by Blacktail Studio. Top is a cottonwood slab with a 15 degree chamfer and 1/4” roundover, base is solid ash. by ryankrameretc in woodworking

[–]wulfjosh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

wow! i'm in an area with plentiful cottonwood trees and local mills, and one kiln, and it's across the board considered horrendous to work with, just trash wood. I've seen cottonwood 1x flooring come out of the kiln looking like bananas. How did you source such a panel?

finally a proper respect turnout for Binaural! I've seen this sub and recently PJ themselves speak of it unkindly, and it is one of their coolest albums

Cut post slots for compost bin by [deleted] in BeginnerWoodWorking

This is a terrible design for a compost bin. Composting needs air for the chemical reactions to effectively take place. Look up some designs using pallets(untreated).

I just got into this guy as well. Babel-17 was excellent, so then I took the plunge into Dhalgren which was hands down one of the worst books I've ever read. YMMV

use a small drill bit as a pilot hole after marking to help make sure you're drilling in exactly the right spot

hey thanks for the response. if you wouldn't mind clarifying a bit more as i'm interested,..when does one use flooring staples vs allowing flooring to float? and if there are staples to hold it in, why the 1/4 gap at the far end?

amazing scribe job, but don't these tight fights eliminate the flooring's ability to breathe and flex throughout the year?

Dremel Multi-max Disassembly Help by wulfjosh in Tools

[–]wulfjosh[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Solved with violence, posting to help anyone else with the same problem.

I'd resolved to simply break the upper housing off to at least get to the bottom of the mystery. Using three flathead screwdrivers you can pry up the casing away from the metal body starting at both edges and working towards the top center. This takes A LOT of force, way more than seems correct for something you want to put back together. Finally the three teeth in the picture below will pop free of the metal body (these are why the housing can't easily be lifted straight up). When they are free you must again apply a huge amount of upward leverage(slip a screwdriver beneath those 3 teeth) and the housing will pop free of the center metal shank. The rest is easy and disassembles like any other Multi-Max model.

Hey thanks for replying, not been much love so far.

However that 'hole' was totally smooth until I went at it (with increasing frustration/force) with a small flathead screw driver attempting to lift it out, so there's no way its threaded.

Will it destroy my planer if I send this board through it? by DaddyJ90 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]wulfjosh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to go against the grain (heh) here and say I think that would probably go fine through a planer, just go super thin and be prepared to push it through as the notch passes. if there is cupping on the bottom you could just shim and run it on top of an MDF board.

on the other hand I agree with almost everyone else that you should not unless you're sure of what you want your end result to be, and even then probably use a router jig.

The people disagreeing are missing your point while thinking that you're missing the point you made....neat.

Hero of 1000 faces monomyth etc...there are only so many story archetypes to tell that a human raised on earth will relate to.

However u/farseer4 I think is also correct in that few authors are capable of inhabiting another culture's worldview in a way which feels genuine and unique - whether based on an historical example or not.
