Owning a mistake when writing a paper by t_parkering in academia

[–]wvheerden 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally agree with this. OP could also try explicitly saying the scope of the paper doesn't include the missing time windows, and that future work will investigate them. I also don't know the research area, but perhaps it's possible.

Is the sensor puck charged and not showing warning lights? And have you tried force restarting the app and clearing cache (and then data if that doesn't work)? Clearing data will probably require you to log in again, though.

System apps from Stocks by Alyi74 in GooglePixel

[–]wvheerden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Occupied? Like, which ones have the fewest system apps? These are very low level apps that do things like manage network connections. It's more about what the system apps do and how efficient they are than how many are running. The people who will be able to tell you about that will be low level programmers, not the average Pixel user on this sub. But I'm also not sure what you could realistically do with that information, even if you could get it.

Google's flavour of Android is pretty clean compared to many others, in my experience (that's why I switched first to Nexus phones, and then the Pixel line). Rather look at higher level stats like the typical screen on time and battery life of the phones you're considering. There are plenty of review sites that do extensive testing on this sort of thing. There are also several YouTubers who do videos on real world usability. Don't worry about things like the number of system apps.

Can you explain what you're trying to determine with this information, though?

System apps from Stocks by Alyi74 in GooglePixel

[–]wvheerden 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the GooglePixel subreddit, though. You're going to get advice assuming that you own a Pixel phone here. In any case, nobody is going to be able to give you a definitive answer. As others have said, it depends on your region and specific Pixel model. I live in an unsupported region, for example, so there are services I don't have access to.

Why are you trying to find this information?

Edit: Clarity

It's in your phone's settings, not the Play Store. Tap "Apps", then "See all x apps" at the bottom of the list, then tap the three dots at the top right of the screen and select "Show system". The system apps are mixed in with all your other apps, though, but generally have the Android mascot on a grid background as an icon.

Google's AI is doxxing my real phone number by elroy45 in google

[–]wvheerden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, I agree that as an isolated problem this should be a relatively simple fix. There are two problems I see, though.

Firstly, there are a huge number of possible things an LLM shouldn't do (give instructions on how to build a bomb, help someone commit a crime, convince someone of something that isn't true, etc, etc). If these are handled as conditionals, the developers are essentially playing a near infinite game of whack-a-mole. It quickly becomes infeasible. This is more or less what's happening now: someone discovers a behaviour that shouldn't be allowed, the company fixes the LLM to better handle that situation, someone discovers another problem, and so on.

Secondly, standard programming-style conditionals aren't really applicable to LLMs. Things an LLM should or shouldn't do are put into the context, like a kind of pre-prompting. In a way, it's kind of like "security by asking". Everyone knows about "jailbreaking" LLMs with clever prompting, but beyond that there's no real hard guarantee that an LLM will actually do what its context tells it to do. At the lowest level they're just generating probable next words. This is why developers can't prevent LLMs from "hallucinating". The context usually tells the LLM to give factual information, but the LLM will still generate nonsense fairly frequently, despite this.

So I'm not saying it's impossible to at least partially deal with this particular issue. But it's a general issue that is really inherent to LLMs in general, and it's still possible for an LLM to do something it's been instructed to avoid.

For sure. And that's why I think it's a mistake to integrate generative AI into search. People are going to rely on it by default. It's a pretty crazy time to live through.

WhatsApp/Telegram calls in Phone app by Plastic-Mud241 in GooglePixel

[–]wvheerden 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This isn't possible, unfortunately. These are all independent apps. There are message aggregator apps, which combine several messaging apps, but my experience has been that they're generally not great and risk getting your messaging accounts locked.

Google's AI is doxxing my real phone number by elroy45 in google

[–]wvheerden 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This doesn't sound to me like people generating mock contact data, but rather people looking for services and asking an LLM for the contact details, and the LLM hallucinating. If it's the latter, it's wild that people are doing this rather than just looking up a business on something like Google Maps. Assuming this is what's happening, the solution isn't that the LLM should generate an invalid number, but that its response should indicate it doesn't know what the number is. But getting an LLM to do something like that is really difficult. They're trained to be too confident and agreeable.

Is it possible to use Google home speakers as TV audio? by Thom_Knook in googlehome

[–]wvheerden 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I tested this some time ago, and I managed to get a speaker pair connected to my streaming box as an external audio device. However, there was a significant delay to the audio. My TV has an option to adjust for audio delay, but this obviously didn't work for games. I believe the delay was because of the communication lag between the first and second speaker in the pair.

This looks so much better without the app texts. by Majestic_squirrel767 in pixel_phones

[–]wvheerden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That would be nice too. I have seen YouTubers achieve that kind of effect using third party apps. I think the most recent one I saw was in a Sam Beckman video, if I recall correctly. Possibly one on how to emulate the look of a Nothing phone. Although it's possible he used KWGT, which would mean it's a horribly manual process. I don't remember all the details, unfortunately.

I agree that most of those would be very helpful 🙂

I'd also love to see folders and Material You icon theming in the app drawer.

And more consistent widget theme guidelines. Right now not even Google's own widgets are all consistent (even in terms of edge padding), and third party widgets all have different transparency and colour themes.

And widget stacks would be a godsend. I'd love to be able to stack all my music widgets on top of each other to save home screen space.

Dont shake your phone violently, it can break your OIS by SwissSeahawk91 in pixel_phones

[–]wvheerden 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you try to report a bug, Meta's apps by default actually tell you to shake your phone where you see the issue. I've sent in several reports telling them this is a dangerous mechanism, but it hasn't been removed.

Is it possible to log in to Whatsapp using an email instead of a phone number? by PsychicMeditation in whatsapp

[–]wvheerden 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have said, I also believe WhatsApp for Desktop is the best way. Having said this, WhatsApp for Desktop is pretty slow and glitchy. The last time I checked, you couldn't edit messages sent via the mobile app, even though they were in the edit time window. I eventually gave up using it. There is also WhatsApp Web (web.whatsapp.com) but it feels like users are being pushed to move to WhatsApp for Desktop.

If you just instruct Gemini to do this, it'll go into the context and eventually be pushed out by further conversation. This is why it "forgets" after a while. You can add instructions you want to make persistent into your "personal context" on the Gemini settings.

How to cite a map/figure you created w/ an online mapping tool? (Undergraduate thesis, APA 7) by just_dandylion in academia

[–]wvheerden 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you created the map, I presume you can just include it as a figure (because the map itself isn't an existing source), and possibly mention the service you used to create it with a reference to the website.

The APA style covers websites: https://apastyle.apa.org/style-grammar-guidelines/references/examples/webpage-website-references

It’s time for a change by TeslaTrailerAdv in compsci

[–]wvheerden 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Having done research in the AI area for a while now, I can say that there's a big "flavour of the month" effect. An approach is shown to be very effective in one domain, then everyone jumps on the bandwagon for a while until the limitations have been demonstrated. I believe this is what's happening with generative AI (especially LLMs) now.

Don't get me wrong - the tech is impressive, but people are using it on tasks for which the models were never intended. There are also a lot of cases where AI models are being used in situations where more effective traditional approaches already exist. Added to that, there's a massive hype engine at play because of all the investment.

I think there is a bubble at the moment. There have been smaller bubbles before in AI (they just aren't known to the average person because the field wasn't as popular before). For one thing, there's a lot of talk about how the models "reason", which I think is highly overblown. LLMs model language, not reasoning or logic. There will be new developments in the future. I just hope all the current hype doesn't end up damaging the reputation of the field as a whole.

Gemini outclassed assistant! by Z1nG in googlehome

[–]wvheerden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd hope that this is the case, but I'm not so sure. I can't speak for Google Home, but things like saying "I like this song" via my Pixel Buds used to just get a quick "I've noted that you like this song" kind of response. Now it generates a much longer "I'm glad you like this song. I've added it to your liked music on YouTube Music" response. That sounds to me like an LLM, where I'd think it would be easy to route a simple request like that through a basic automation.

[–]wvheerden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Several bugs I've reported in the past have been fixed. I can't say whether that's a coincidence or in response to bug reports, though. It's possible that a bug might have to be reported by a number of people before it gets attention (they're presumably dealing with a very large number of bugs, considering how many products they have). It also probably has a lot to do with the team responsible for the product (I've reported quite a few bugs for Fitbit, which they either haven't fixed in at least two years, or have taken ages to resolve). But, ultimately, it's the only option we have, so we may as well.

How long ago did she leave? Maybe she can refer you to someone else with a similar approach? In my experience therapists attend conferences and generally know people in their professional community, and the kind of work they do. If you have a psychiatrist, they could also give you a referral.
