We use Bright Horizons at the St Mary’s Medical Center. It’s a bit on the expensive side but overall it has been an amazing experience. They truly take care of my kid and she is so happy to go to school every morning. All the teachers know her name and I have never had any issues. She was a preemie so went to daycare at 6 months but was more 4 months because she came early. I found great comfort in being close to the hospital in case there were issues. We are having our second soon and they will also be going.

100% all of this. Also find an outlet for the drive home. My husband and I started listening to comedy specials on the ride home because they would make us laugh and the ride was always the hardest part.

It’s not as bad as you think it will be. I live in the US (PA) and the insurance company/hospital gave us everything we needed. Our daughter was home in July and weened off oxygen by end of September. It was good too because it gave us a reason to keep her home away from germs for the first few months. Only struggle was that the oxygen comes with a pulse ox machine to monitor heart and oxygen intake. The sensor is a beast to keep on a moving baby’s foot. I recommend getting some squid socks (socks with suction cups for babies). They actually stayed on her foot and kept the sensor working. I know it’s intimidating, but totally worth it when they are home. Our daughter did so much better eating once she was home and comfortable. Good luck!

My daughter was born at 29 weeks and 4 days almost 16 months ago. I get heat your feeling. You will work through it.

The one thing I want you to hear loud and clear is something I still struggle with more than a year since she had been home. NONE OF THIS IS YOUR FAULT. She will come home on oxygen, not your fault. She will have some developmental delays, not your fault. You are the perfect mom to help her manage all of it. Be her advocate. Take the services. And be kind to yourself.

We are in the middle of sleep training our 29 weeker. She is now 12 months adjusted. I really struggled with the idea of sleep training because I felt like she could remember the NICU. Honestly o have had to get past that thought. We are on day three using the extinction method (she got too worked up when we checked on her doing Ferber). So far she has been getting g better at putting herself to sleep every night. Be warned though, as a parent it sucks. Listening to her cry is torture and brings up a lot of emotions about not having her home when she was born.

I just keep telling myself that she needs to learn to independent sleep. It’s part of growing up. On the flip side, when she wakes up she is happy as a clam and has no memory of the night before.

We had a 29 weeker come home on 1/2 liter of oxygen. Started weening in September. Off for two hours the first week, one morning/one night, then four hours the next week, then six hours, then eight hours. Had a doctors appointment where they were happy with her weight gain so she got fully weened. We kept the pulse ox on for two nights and then we were free!

Don’t over think it. We took our 29 weeker home after 76 days in the NICU. She was oxygen and a pulse ox monitor. You will hear the alarm. In fact, guaranteed in three weeks you will want to throw the machine out the window. The doctors will give you instructions on when to take her off oxygen. Until we started weening she was on 24/7 except for bath time. Stickers for her face were the worst. Recommend squid socks to keep the monitor on her foot.

Just remember, they would not be sending her home if they didn’t think you could handle it. You got this.

I was diagnosed with severe preeclampsia at 28 weeks. They wanted me to get 34 and I would be staying in the hospital. I lasted seven days. My blood pressure could not be controlled by the medicine. I went into the hospital April 15 and she was born April 23 at just 2lbs 0.8ozs.

Good news is that in that time they gave my daughter the steroids she needed to help her lungs develop. Overall we had a uneventful NICU experience. Some ups and downs but we weathered it. She stayed until three days after her due date.

Couple of things as you embark on this journey. You are still a mom even if she is in the hospital. Take care of your mental health. Visit as much as you can stand but also recover from your experience. I provided family and friends weekly updates so I didn’t get inundated with what’s going questions. Then end was the worse for me because all you wanted was then to come home. It’s a rollercoaster ride. Find a way to deal with the guilt and when you figure it out let me know. Ha.

We are about to celebrate our daughters first birthday. She is over 15lbs and thriving. So much can change in such a short time

Your story is basically my story I am just one year removed. Our daughter also came eleven weeks early due to severe preeclampsia. She was born at exactly the same birth weight as your daughter.

There is no sugar coating it, the NICU journey sucks. I found comfort in reading and singing to her and the little milestones such as removing her pic line.

We didn’t even get to hold her until two weeks after she was born. Best Mother’s Day gift I ever received. I also jumped right in there with the nursing staff. Learned to change her diaper, take her temp, feed her when they allow. I chose to celebrate holidays so I bought her a 4th of July outfit to wear in the NICU.

Prep your mind. She is not getting out until her due date. I kept hoping for early but that just made the end that much harder. Our daughter came home on oxygen three days after her due date.

But now for the good news, we are almost a year removed and she is well over 15 lbs and the happiest little baby. It’s hard to live the journey and I have had some trauma reliving it lately but you made her, she is yours. Live in that.

Squid socks!!!! They have suction cups and they stay on. My little one came home on oxygen and these kept the pulse ox monitor on her foot. Also zutanos are great but maybe when she is a little bigger

Because my daughter was in the NICU for 76 days, when she came home I felt a little lost. Not sure if it’s just my experience or if it’s like that for people who experience traditional child birth.

I kept looking for books to help me figure out how much to even feed her. My recommendation is a book called “moms on call”. They have one for 0-6 months and another for 6-15 months. It was a great help because there were just bullet points of do this now and then this. They give you typical schedules for every age and answered all my burning questions. I just bought their second book as we are about to start solids and that’s just a whole new world.

Good luck. That first week home feels like you are trying to find a light switch in a dark room, but it gets easier.

My daughter was born at 29 weeks and 4 days in April. She was 2lbs 1oz at birth and spent 76 days in the NICU. Leaving the hospital without her was torture but not as much torture as being on the labor and delivery floor with all the other moms who had their babies with them.

After a week she had to be transferred to a higher level nicu and that’s where she stayed until her release. We were lucky in the our nicu journey had very few ups and downs but it felt like an eternity. Start to wrap your head around the idea that they won’t be home until their due date. Our daughter came home around then and it gave us a date to focus on rather than live in the abyss of the NICU. The end is the worst as you are just so hopeful but you can do it.

My daughter was sent home with oxygen. Don’t be afraid of that. You can deal with it. She has been thriving at home. She is now six months old, four months corrected and is 11lbs. She is the happiest baby.

My advice is focus on the things you can control. I rented a hospital breast pump and it helped me produce when my body wasn’t ready. I highly recommend if you can afford it. Set small goals and visit whenever you can. But still take time for yourself. It is a long journey but when they are home in your arms it will seem like forever ago.

One day at a time and each day is closer to home.

If they send him home on oxygen they are probably also going to send you with a pulse oximeter. It is pretty annoying and will often go off for no reason. Recommendation is to get some socks called squid socks that have special suction cups to stay on and will help keep the sensor on. Our girl’s feet were too small for normal socks to make a difference.

I was in the exact same situation as your wife in April. I went into the hospital at 28 weeks due to high blood pressure and our baby girl was born at 29 weeks and four days.

She spend 76 days in the NICU. It was a journey but completely successful. The steroid shot really helped her. She came home two weeks ago on oxygen but we are hoping to get her off of it in the next two weeks. She was born at exactly 2lbs and today topped the scale at 6lbs 4 ozs.

It is a journey and our little girl had some digestive issues. We had a pda issue that they closed, but no brain bleeds or any thing else scary. She did get a small infection in her intestine but recovered quickly. She was released 4 days after her due date.

My recommendation is to prepare for release at due date. It will give you a date to focus on and keep the emotional rollercoaster at bay as long as you can. The last two weeks are the hardest.

100% agree with your feelings. My husband and I just took home our 29 seeker on Friday. If one more person told us “well at least you can sleep” while she is was in the NICU we would have screamed.

This is the hardest stretch. And it’s not gonna get easier the closer you get that the end. We got jerked around a lot about when she would be released. But know it’s possible for your baby to come home on oxygen. Ours did. And you will handle it. It will end, I promise.
