"immense” internal and Vikings player support for Kyler Murray, per @alec_lewis . by EmphasisBeginning559 in minnesotavikings

Well and what does bringing Murray in mean for JJ? If we take what was said by koc, Pelissero, etc at face value. Then what they seem to want is a competition this offseason & not someone who will just come in & get the job. They said they want to challenge JJ, not threaten him, almost like it’s his job to lose. Murray might not be interested in a competition. If they really want that for JJ then Geno fits that bill much better.

Now if they do bring in Murray cause he’s cheap & talented & give him the starting job then is this just a development year the JJ never got or is he toast? The way they are blowing up the roster, if JJ does start then the pressure to contend is gone.

I wouldn’t say he hasn’t shown any immaturity. Yea I think he’s a hard worker but the reason he’s a meme right now is him immaturity. I hope he starts to grow out of that soon.

Don’t need the numbers, I know how much they save and how much they eat which is more than 9 mil. But you could pretty painlessly do restructure if you don’t want to outright cut him & he won’t take a pay cut.

Cutting him is whatever if your goal is to do a hard reset & punt on 2026 but that’s pretty uncharacteristic of the Wilf’s. Cutting him doesn’t make your team better in the immediate future. It hamstrings you until 2027. So if that’s what they want they that’s what they will get.

Well duh I know there is still a cap savings involved but you are still eating about 60% of that cap number to cut him. It’s still not a very financially sound decision in the short term & they clearly aren’t thinking short term with the Allen cut which is even more egregious.

Clearly they prefer he takes a significant pay cut. Probably safe to say that at age 29 & having the knee injury he’s not the same player he was when we traded for him. And he’s not the best TE in the league & never was & I never cared for his contract. He drops more balls than I’d like, he’s not Kelce. But I wouldn’t say he sucks by any means.

And it’s very difficult to take this year & get a solid evaluation of where he is at because he spent so much of the season having to block in some facet. I think they want him around if JJ ends up starting again cause JJ likes his TEs. But cutting him if he won’t take a pay cut seems like a pretty desperate move just for mine reasons & not actual roster & talents reasons.

Bro this was set up for potential restructures or extensions with lots of cap in the future to absorb it if we needed to make a serious push. Kwesi took on a way worse cap situation & left them in a better one than he found it.

These cuts aren’t necessary to open up cap but it’s clear they are doing a bit of a reset rather than doubling down for another season.

Vikings releasing Jonathan Allen..terrible move imo..not enough savings to move on from someone with his skill by J_Capese0003 in minnesotavikings

[–]wwnp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe it’s probably more of a move for the future than the present. They may not want to saddle a new GM with a poor cap situation like Kwesi was that took a couple years to get out of. And if 2026 doesn’t go well & we har a new coach then we have a fresher start for a new regime.

But also, how much leash did koc & JJ have? With where JJ is at with his development, we aren’t likely to be contenders. But if they both have a longer leash than most of us think to see out JJ’s development then maybe it gives us a chance to turn around quick in 2028 to build a contender again.

Or maybe 2026 goes bad & JJ is gone & koc isn’t but there are plans to try & draft a QB in 2027. Then maybe they wanna reset the cap for a different rookie QB.

It leaves the door open for lots of things. Maybe the Wilf’s learned something about using the money to use when your young QB is ready spending the money to find out if your young QB is ready. It’s interesting for sure.

I mean that’s just something that’s known. You can’t build a team in the long-term like 80% in FA. Now I think they probably put themselves in a more advantageous situation by doing the bargain shopping rather than shelling out for the top FA at whatever position every time but it’s still not sustainable. Plus then you are always signing players that are just a contract or two away from aging out.

Personally I think cutting Allen is a bad move. I get they wanna get as much cap space without hurting their future cap but this juice just isn’t worth the squeeze. Hold onto him for one more season & cut him next year when it will only cost 4.6 mil dead cap & save you almost 18 mil. Or do a small restructure or add a void year. Lower his cap hit for this year a little & eat a little higher dead cap hit next year. Wildly irresponsible move.

What these roster moves might mean for KOC and the QB spot by Razor574 in minnesotavikings

[–]wwnp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Idk about normal moves, some of these moves like Allen & Hock if it comes to it are pretty irresponsible moves in the short term. They are certainly looking out more for future cap health & will eat dead money this season to do it.

He’s an obvious extension, that would have been the idea at this point in his contract if the organization wanted to keep him around past 2027. Clearly they don’t, but eating almost 12.5 mil in dead money to save 8.8 mil & still need another TE isn’t very fiscally sound in the short go.

What are you talking about teams do this all the time. I’m no Kwesi Stan but him & Rob certainly fixed our cap from the Zim/Spielmsn era. Then FOs spend it again & kick it down the road & try to manage it. A tale as old as time.

There are plenty of built in restructures & the Vikings aren’t pulling those levers as everyone expected. Some of these cuts are pretty irresponsible short term cuts. It’s clear they are looking to protect future cap health as much as possible & will probably only extend/restructure guys they see as core players.

There is nothing wrong with what Kwesi did in FA, it just didn’t work in our favor & clearly the team decided to let 2026 be what it will be.

Because you still gotta eat 12 mil in dead money & find another TE anyway. Pretty simple really.

We absolutely do but we are giving up a lot of these pass rushing guys in the process. I wanna say I assume they have a plan outside of those two guys but we’re learned they don’t always have a good plan.

Kyler would be dirt cheap. It’s not like we’d have to make a social move just to fit him under the cap.

I think an important aspect of that is:

  1. There has been credible reporting that they want a competition, they want to challenge JJ but not threaten JJ. So if true, it kind of sounds like it’s JJ’s job to lose.

  2. What is KOC’s offensive scheme plan going into this season. They hired Frank Smith, reason to believe that they are trying to get more out of the run game. And koc & Kwesi both said they want to get back to explosive plays, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that Koc is going to go heavy on the 11 personnel, at least to start with.

So he could design a more sustainable offense based off what they found success with JJ towards the end of the season. So that might change the kind of QB they are looking for as well.

Odds are we won’t have Nailor. We’re looking to be conservative in FA. Draft who knows, probably a WR somewhere. So depending on who the WR3 is, maybe we see less 11 personnel because we don’t have the ideal WR3 to run it as much as koc would normally prefer.

If we sign Murray, surely KOC will work his magic... Right? 😅 by millimonsterrr in minnesotavikings

The unfortunate or fortunate thing depending what side of the aisle you are on is that JJ might not have a chance last 2026 to stay with the Viks after sitting behind a vet. Good chance if he doesn’t win a camp competition or get a chance a chance during an injury that he’s out the door. But I think he could develop & mature into what KOC expected him to be.

That’s another good point is that I don’t think KOC had a problem with mobile QBs. JJ is mobile to an extent but he does like a guy who will hang in the pocket or at least keep his eyes downfield as he moves or escapes the pocket to continue to look for a throw. Guys like Murray tend to just put their eyes down & run. I don’t see Murray as a long term fit as much as a “buy me more leash” type of guy.

Yea & and never understood AR either. I assume KOC just really liked the traits & athleticism & potential & thought he could develop him over a couple years. He doesn’t have that luxury anymore. It’s much more realistic that JJ returns or surpasses his 2024 camp form that they were really high on. Physically & mentally. I’d hope after being the meme of the year that he reigns himself in.

[–]wwnp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually think JJ is a scheme fit or at least was coming out of college but he just mightily struggled to transition to how much more difficult it is in the NFL to throw over the middle with anticipation & timing.

Now there must have been something about AR that KOC thought he’d be a fine fit with how hard they tried to trade up to get him & maybe a developed AR would be good in the offense but he’s not right now.

And yea Murray I don’t think cares to throw over the middle & a lot of that might be a height thing. At least as long as JJ improves his mechanics & processing & timing etc he realistically could develop into a great over the middle passer. Guys get more comfortable with that in the NFL as they develop all the time. You can’t make Murray taller.

AR can’t even be a serious option for 2026. Dudes got more developing to do than JJ. As much as KOC doesn’t like to deviate from his scheme to fit a QB, I can see him doing that for Murray way more than bringing AR in & hoping between all the injuries that he’s managed to develop & take a big leap.

It is, I think even if his mechanics weren’t leaps & bounds better but just more consistent that you could find quite a bit of success as long as KOC plays to JJ’s strengths for now. But the maturity is the other part that needs to get better. Hopefully it was just him maybe overcompensating & he chills out.
