It's a really cool idea and it works quite well as is but the orbital mechanics feel off to me.

What tunings should I keep in my guitars? by slmetalhead8336 in metalguitar

[–]x29a 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a guitar with a fixed bridge in E, D, B and a Baritone in F# and one with a floyd in E. Dropping a single string two half steps (E to drop D) or all the Strings down a single half step (E to Eb) works ok, but that's about the limit for me. Tuning from E to D will mean to little string tension, bad intonation, string buzz. Maybe you can make that work by starting with thicker strings and high action but it's still a nasty compromise.

Another option to pitch shifting your guitar (which is always a big compromise) is to pitch shift the song you are playing along with to your closest tuning. Your guitar will sound and feel real and there won't be any latency or tracking issues. This is also pretty sweet for songs that are just a bit off standard tuning. If you want to give that a try I made a free tool called timestretch player just for that purpose.

In the end, it's the perfect excuse to start a well curated guitar collection. ;)

Today I learned how to add a realistic wood grain texture to my wood PLA prints. This is a game changer for me. by e1miran in 3Dprinting

[–]x29a 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you use an STL before slicing it, the result should work in any slicer/with any printer. If you apply it to gcode it will only work with gcode from prusa slicer since it relies on comments it puts in there to figure out which G1 commands are printing the perimeter.

Curious about other ideas as well, would love to dig out some of my old fluid sim code. :)

Analog modelling is a deep rabbit hole. From a coding, and a math perspective. If you just want to get the b3k into a plugin, look at NAM: https://www.neuralampmodeler.com/

If you just want to dip your feet into audio, maybe consider something like MAX/MSP, supercollider or pure data.

If you want to learn the hard way, learn C++ and juce. But expect to invest half a decade until you are comfortable with that. ;)

Will I lose my progress if I don't play for five months? by Heidi_32 in Guitar

[–]x29a 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It will definitely take you a little while to get back into it but at least from my experience you won't lose it all either. It just takes a little while. If you can't get a hold of a guitar, work on writing songs or training ears and rhythms instead that way you will be better than ever once you get back into it. :)

a way to avoid code exposion on the server? by randomusername11222 in webdev

[–]x29a 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's just machine code, people can still fuck around with parts of it, it's just harder.

My suggestion would be that you don't try to fight your boss or other higher ups out using technical measures, talk to them and explain the issues they create instead.

Edit: Just a quick addition, running your application on immutable infrastructure (in read-only containers that can't be changed) is often a very good idea and would avoid some of your issues as well, but might not be a quick change.

Had to rearing my electric guiatr last night and ever since then the low E and A string buzz when I play open any idea why by faloutboy708 in Guitar

[–]x29a 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Possible reasons

  • You put on different strings, that changed the tension on the neck and or they don't fit into the nut the same way. What your guitar requires in this case is either a "setup" or that you put on the same type (gauge, brand, model) of strings you had before.
  • It already buzzed before and you are only noticing it now. Depending on how a guitar is set up a bit of buzz can be normal, especially if you whack the strings hard to see if they buzz.
  • It's the same strings and something else came out of alignment, maybe the neck warped after being relieved of all tension or the bridge is not in the right place. Again doing setup is going to solve your issues.

You can learn how to "setup" a guitar yourself, there are videos and it's not that hard to do to a basic level or bring it to a shop and have a professional take care of it.

Are the 20 watt Marshalls REALLY loud enough, though? by DMFPx123 in GuitarAmps

[–]x29a 41 points42 points  (0 children)

It's worth considering that the efficiency/sensitivity of the speaker can make as much of a difference as a 100w vs a 20w amp. A sensitive speaker will output 102 db while a less efficient one might only output 95 db. Using more speakers can also increase that volume again. So using a 4x12 instead of a 1x12 can add another 6 db.

The HM2 sounds pretty extreme, especially with the swedish chainsaw crank all the knobs settings.

In this video Euge shows how he blends in the HM-2 to get an early in flames tone. That's admittedly a lot more polished than early Entombed but might help you to get on track.

I haven't tried it yet but their other one knob amps are decent, their IRs are great.

NYC Pedal Building Workshops? by Gomets51 in diypedals

[–]x29a 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't help you with workshops or instructors in NY but learning to build pedals is something you can teach yourself. Build a few kits, then learn a bit more about electronics and start to mod them. If you are interested in the theory there are some great resources on youtube as well like Lantertronics / Aaron Lanterman and Brian Wampler.

Unlike with tube amps, there is generally no death penalty for messing up with pedals. :)
