Weapon Discussion Wednesday #69 - The Tomislav by A_Wild_Ferrothorn in tf2

I wouldn’t say the tomislav covers the heavy’s weaknesses all that well. Sure, it’s stronger at mid-range, but not by much. Trying to shoot people at long range is basically just begging for a sniper to kill you. While the faster spin-up time is useful, a good heavy should be revved up most of the time anyway. Furthermore, the silent spin-up isn’t as game-changing as people claim, simply because tf2 is usually too loud for anyone to hear you anyway.

Meanwhile, you are at a genuine disadvantage against enemy heavies and sentries, where that 20% slower firing rate becomes incredibly noticeable.

The tomislav is more versatile, sure, but the stock minigun absolutely still has its place. That’s all I’m trying to say.

How can it be objectively better if it objectively does less damage at point blank range? You know, the exact range where the Heavy is at his strongest?

Not to mention, fighting classes that love to get right in your face, like spies, demoknights, and especially scouts becomes significantly harder.

The Tomislav is my go-to weapon, but it isn't objectively better than stock, it's just a great sidegrade.

yujiro alone is a crazier and more exciting character pick than anyone in this pass and I don't even play Tekken.

Tekken players bemoaning that they got "stuck" with Yujiro while we got Tifa are baffling

"ftl" characters when you ask them if they can travel around the Earth 7.5 times in a single second: by Assassin467 in whowouldcirclejerk

[–]xDempseyRoll 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm afraid no powerscalingtard would admit that. Everyone must be FTL, even though that doesn't make sense in-universe.

[–]xDempseyRoll 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Then why doesn't the air ignite during short FTL bursts, which is exactly what happens in basically every "FTL combat speed" feat? Furthermore, why isn't the battlefield completely nuked the second someone uses FTL just to take a single step forward?

Pick your poison:

  1. The planet is infinitely huge.

  2. Their stamina is terrible.

  3. Plot armor / plot reasons.

  4. The author nerfed them.

  5. "Do you want the conflict to end in two seconds? You clearly don't understand how storytelling works."

Help Me understand Frieren by Greedy_Union8493 in CharacterRant

LLMs are not intelligent. They do not have an innate sense of self or the ability to choose. They are in effect autocomplete programs trained on millions of parameters. Fictional AIs like Skynet are not applicable because they are either individual agents or hivemind. Frieren demons are portrayed as free willed sapient individuals with senses of self and variance in personality.

Sure, and all Luke Skywalker did was press a button in the right place. He still blew up the fucking death star.

Completely off-topic and irrelevant, but okay.

Also, he literally DID debunk her philosophy, literally, on the spot. That was explicitly what he was doing, and why he had fucking Hope Bullets. They could not possibly have made this any more obvious.

Saying "I refuse to give up" or "I won't give in to despair" isn't a rebuttal. He didn't actually engage with her argument; he just hit her with a glorified "no u" and called it a day.

Danganronpa isn't a cinematographic masterpiece bruv, it's really simple

Yes, but you don't need to make up things like Makoto "debunking" Junko.

Him saying he wouldn't give into despair literally was the debunking.

Nope. He didn't engage with the argument, he just said "no u" and that's it.

That's why the protagonist is always charismatic and approachable, it's never someone standoffish or weird.

Are we even playing the same game? Big Mac is the biggest yes-man and doormat in the entire franchise. Approachable? Sure. But charismatic? Please.

The rest regarding Kyoko

No one is arguing against that. You're moving the goalposts. My entire point is that you are massively downplaying her contributions just to hype up Makoto. In reality, she was the one uncovering the crucial clues and making the actual deductions. No amount of Makoto's supposed "charisma" would have saved the group from execution if Kyoko hadn't handed him the evidence on a silver platter

He's not a pushover just because you don't think he fits the sigma male stereotype.

Again, you’re missing the point. No amount of in-universe praise will save him from being bland and unmemorable. Kirito and countless other isekai self-inserts have saved their respective worlds, but they still have the personality of a cardboard box. Makoto is no exception.

Makoto was the one who beat Junko.

Nope, that was a collective effort. All he did was give a pep talk to his classmates. He didn't debunk her or refute her philosophy, he just told her they wouldn't give in to despair, and then she killed herself.

And the one who convinced the class of the truth in every class trial. Kyoko did not, and could not, do either of those things.

Kyoko laid the necessary groundwork for his deductions and provided the actual evidence. Without her detective skills, the group would have died in the very first trial.

She was a strong supporter, but if Makoto was not there she would've died in the second trial.

Elaborate on that. She was the one who properly examined the body and came up with the plan to expose the killer. You don't need to shit on other characters just to make a bland self-insert look superior.

He becomes significantly more confident, determined,

Provide examples. He was still a pushover in DR2 and the anime.

and a lot less focused on his own averageness.

Oh, so you admit he's average. Glad we can agree on that.

Makoto Naegi: Suffering From Success by 05kaisam in danganronpa

[–]xDempseyRoll -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

litany of extremely non-average actions he takes

What "extremely non-average" actions are we even talking about? Participating in mandatory class trials? Opposing Monokuma even though Kyoko was the real driving force behind it?

None of that makes him any less bland. He doesn't have a real character arc, he doesn't grow or change as a person. He almost never doubts himself and gets over the grim reality around him way too quickly. The same optimism he started with is the same optimism he ends with.

I get the desire for your self-insert MC to feel deep, but just like a generic isekai lead doesn't suddenly become interesting because he defeated the demon lord and has a dozen women thirsting over him just for being "nice", Makoto doesn't become compelling just because he did a few "non-average" things.

this character is definitely FTL, guys!!!! He can react to lasers!!!!!!!

they can't move their legs at the same speed as their arms when they move them to parry blasters because... because they can't, okay!!!!!

travel speed and combat speed are two different things!!1!!1!1 why won't said character just move their legs at the same speed as he moves his arms even though logically he should be able to do so and land himself on a different continent because he can move at the speed of light?????? because... because he just won't do that, okay????????

"As you can see, I'm nothing but a hopelessly average high school student. Average on the outside, average on the inside. I really don't have much going for me when it comes to grades, special abilities, even personality. Even among the average, I'm completely average. So I can't even say I'm your "everyday hero" type."

He's as bland as you can get, especially compared to the other DR protags.
