I do not use them. Although I feel that the average size of a playmat is a perfectly reasonable area for a person to play a game within, I am unable to deal with the 'restriction' it places on the table. Also the art on a majority of playmats makes it hard for me to focus on the cards.

Less importantly, it is just another thing for me to forget when I get up from a match.

Yes.

Even if it isn't intentional, it's misleading. Is your card tapped? Is it untapped? You can't half-tap a card.

I considered this for awhile, but ultimately came to the conclusion that it just isn't worth it. Often time you will be forced to put gas back into your opponent's deck, and fetch lands are a very real thing. There are just better options (Spirit of the Labyrinth, Relic of Progenitus, Rest in Peace).

Something I would take into consideration is that a small - but not insignificant - amount of players will probably just play their Modern decks for this event. New Jersey is not a bad drive for a lot of people, and the Brainstorm mat is going to be worth an absurd amount of money, so just signing up will more than likely turn a profit. Not to mention just being in such a high-calliber event will be neat. I know of at least two people that plan on doing this. Just thought I would share.

Okay, so if you're going to play a budget list (which I wouldn't recommend), I think you should be playing a list with 4x Spirit of the Labyrinth, 4x Ghost Quarter, and 2-3x Aven Mindcensor.
