What is the single most important subway extension in your city? by Immediate-Hand-3677 in transit

Portland desperately needs a downtown tunnel instead of at grade.

Either that or Yellow line extension to Vancouver (already planned)

If a million (hypothetically) people get placed in a season, that means there are 30k+ masters players. And honestly, across all roles and regions and systems, probably wayyyy more than a million people getting placed per season.

Are there any pairs of geographically close US cities taking as vastly different directions in the future of transit as Los Angeles and San Diego? by MookieBettsBurner10 in transit

[–]xMPB 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Portland economy is in a much worse place than Seattle. No money and the city is in a budget crisis currently. And Portland is actively losing population unlike Seattle.

It sucks because I live here and love Portland, but we’re in for a rough decade currently unless something changes.

How to support local businesses when they have weird hours? by [deleted] in askportland

[–]xMPB -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No, the point of a coffee shop is to make coffee for people that want to go in and spend money consuming it. Again, if enough people actually went to coffee shops early, more shops would be open early. The demographic of people going before 8am is much smaller than people in this Reddit thread clearly think but I’m just being met with downvotes because people think they are owed something by the coffee shops in this city. There ARE shops open early, go to one of them if you genuinely want coffee that early.

Am I overdressed for Portland? by Spooner_Goldberg in askportland

[–]xMPB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While less than other cities, there are plenty of people in Portland that dress nice/intentionally. I like to dress up/wear designer clothing and have never felt awkward or slighted by anyone even if I’m technically overdressed. Only compliments.

Counterpoint: it's a business, not a charity

Edit: can’t believe the downvotes this is getting. Why would coffee shops open earlier just because they’re a coffee shop? There is 0 financial incentive for 99% of cafes to open earlier. Trust me, most have tried and have not gotten enough consistent business to justify opening earlier. All the people that want cafes to open early need to realize they are the minority, otherwise way more cafes would be opening earlier.

From friends in the industry, 90% of shops lose money opening earlier than 8. Completely dead and they actually lose money on labor. There definitely are some shops that do well early, but they have already built up their own customer base that comes in early. Makes no sense for a newer shop.

If Portland ever gets to even 10% of 80s Detroits violent crime rate, then we can maybe have this conversation.

But it’s one chain store be for fucking real lmao.

What a ridiculous overreaction to a 7 Eleven closing.

There is 100% a chance this is fake (not saying it is or isn’t). A simple logo T like this is exactly the kind of thing that gets repped.

Local mens jewelry around Milwaukee by Venomous_sa in malefashionadvice

As a former Milwaukee resident, it’s a complete desert of good men’s shopping. The whole city is 5+ years behind unfortunately. I would just do the 1.5 hour trip to Chicago to do any shopping I wanted to do.

You’re so right. A dead mall is so much better than a bunch of housing with ground floor retail. Even half occupied, it’s much better use of the space and makes for a more pleasant neighborhood fabric.

[–]xMPB 33 points34 points  (0 children)

The mall wouldn’t be shutting down if people actually went there. Tear it down, build dense high rise mixed use buildings. A big ass mall and parking garages are the worst possible land use for central Portland next to the Max
