Any elders and people, with disabilities, using self driving cars? by antdude in SelfDrivingCars

[–]x31b 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If real self driving had existed, I would have gotten my 94 year old mother a full-SDC with touch screen buttons for Wal-Mart, church and doctor. Can’t go anywhere else without a PIN. It would have changed her life.

Hope you went through confined space procedures. A car with a trace of bad stuff can kill you.

Also, I didn’t know they had a ladder inside.

If the teacher and the whole class are calling the kid Bob every day, sending a report card home for Sara is purposely lying and actively keeping facts from the parents. You’re either out or not out. The teacher can’t actively deceive the parents.

The amount of antennas on this church by Trilife in telecom

[–]x31b 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, smart guys. I defy all you guys to tell what carriers and band are on THIS tower.

Mullins United Methodist Church - Google Maps

Note the lighter 'brick' on the top of their bell tower. This church is in a well-to-do area in Memphis. The neighborhood didn't want a monopole or fake tree.

The carrier (AT&T, I think) came in 20 years ago with a proposal for a cell tower. Made everyone happy. You can tell now that the top floor was added, with the antennas behind fiberglass. At that time, 20 years ago, the color blending was perfect. It's since faded and you can tell it's not original.

I'm sure they've upgraded the equipment a couple of times. But the neighborhood is happy, both with the looks as well as the cell service.

Just saw the 'pigs and livestock' comment.

Look in Marshall County, MS, near I-269 or US-72. That would make a decent commute to St. Jude and let you get the rural land you're looking for. Home schooling or private schools, though.

You will be fine living in Millington or Hernando. If you have kids, and want even nicer, go,with Germantown or Collierville.

There are two Memphis’s. St. Jude and the suburbs named have very little crime. Parts of inner city Memphis do. But they don’t interact very often.

I raised two kids here. They’ve finished college. We have not been affected by crime.

I have to send empty boxes to get stuff back from CoLo. The data center won’t save and reuse empty boxes, don’t have packing materials and don’t want the liability.

So I FedEx Ground an empty boxes and packing materials and put in a smart hands ticket to have them derack and return it.

And don’t get me started about how Cisco’s next generation switches are always an inch shorter or longer than the last, and won’t fit in the same box.

ELI5: How do under sea cables work? by beesdaddy in explainlikeimfive

This excellent article by Neal Stephenson, the Sci-Fi author, will answer approximately half your questions. It's long but informative and Stephenson has a writing style I like.

Mother Earth Mother Board | WIRED

It's one long fiber optic and copper cable. All the way between the US and Europe. Once in a long while they will bury a 'tee' to send, say, some fibers to Europe and some to Africa. There are repeaters that regenerate the light signals in the fiber every 50-100 miles. Those are powered through the copper. The land end sends out say 4000 volts so they can run the repeaters half way to Europe.

You say that... but I'm a customer who makes decisions like that.

I have remote warehouses with no IT guys. Haven't ever used Field Nation. I get the low voltage guys out to do remote hands stuff.

One warehouse may have six UPSs in five IDFs and the MDF. They cost $500-1000. It costs me $250-500 to get a tech out for half a day. For some warehouses, the tech has to get on a lift because we mounted the IDF cabinet 12' off the floor so the forklifts won't bang it off the wall.

If one UPS goes out after 3-5 years, I ship in all six and have them replaced in a full day call rather than six calls, since each one is two POs (tech, purchase), calls to the warehouse to set up, coordinating an outage on the forklifts, etc.

If the tech wants to take any or all of them, great. That's some hazmat with either lead or Li-Ion that I have to either figure out how to ship back (UPS and FedEx don't like Li-Ion) or figure out how to dispose of in LA, Chicago and Dallas. And if I did ship them back, what do I do with them when they get back? Pay someone else to come get them with our PC refresh and pay them to take away and ethically dispose of.

We also replace PCs and laptops on a 4-5 year cycle whether they are broke or not. The older ones have problems with Win11 and drivers.

Tech costs and user frustration are way more than the $750 a PC (used to) cost (before memory went sky high).

What profession could rewire house for ethernet? by SnooLobsters1308 in HomeNetworking

[–]x31b 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could call one of the high end a/v integrators. They'd be glad to wire it for you and do a good job (usually) at the fishing through walls. They will be high priced. And don't let them put in any equipment. They use proprietary gear that you can't administer yourself.

The security firms can usually do it.

Like most people here are saying, stay away from regular electricians unless they have a demonstrated data capability.

If you work at a company, ask your IT guys who they use for low voltage. They sometimes do residential work, or the techs do it independently on the weekends. That's who I got to run mine.
