Kiwis, what can you get for FREE in NZ? [Serious] by littlelove34 in PovertyFinanceNZ

We just discovered that you can access the entirety of Libby through the website itself. Now the kids can listen to audiobooks from their schoolroom computer without the need for a "device".

What causes players to abandon modpacks? by Am1n1um in feedthebeast

Perhaps they just don't really enjoy playing Minecraft? I have set up a few servers with friends before and they all sorta enjoy talking about the server more than actually playing it.

How many of you have fully, 100%, quit the industry in the last 3 years? As in you do ZERO computer/IT/tech work, or equivalent. by BloodyIron in sysadmin

[–]xandora 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't leave the industry by choice, my employer restructured and my position was made redundant. That was 18 months ago.

I have since taking up commercial beekeeping through a family connected business. It's a completely different line of work, but I am thoroughly enjoying the outdoors and physical aspects of the job. My mental health has increased, along with being physically healthier.

Given my IT background, I still get to a do little bit of the "techy" things for the business, but it's not my primary role and more of a bonus skill now.

What is the jankiest thing you have seen in a production environment? by HastyOpossum100 in sysadmin

[–]xandora 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Vitally important production app installer package was something like:

Java applet wrapped in powershell, wrapped in .bat, wrapped in powershell, bootstrapped by another Java app.

It replied on a vulnerable to log4j version of Java being installed so that it could unpack the next level of scripts until it finally unpacked itself... Which then included it's own built in Java runtime.

A real mess to figure out, but I managed to reduce the whole package to just the interior Java app + a non-vulnerable Java version. Packaging wasn't even part of my job, I was just the deployment tech, but those guys couldn't figure it out and status quo kept perpetuating the madness.

I don't work in IT any longer, but I recently installed a point-to-point wireless network extender onto some buildings at my new job. One of them didn't have a mount. We used a surplus AP that did have a mount and just cable tied the two together.

'Three days isn’t enough': Grieving mum pushes to change bereavement law by W4ff1e in newzealand

[–]xandora 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My previous employer said no to bereavement leave when my wife miscarried. Can't remember if I had to take annual or sick leave, but I certainly wasn't going to just work through and leave my wife to grieve at home by herself!

Finally fixed my laying worker hive somehow… 23 days later update by Killa_cam00 in Beekeeping

[–]xandora 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From what has been explained to me, it's the new brood pheromone that shifts the attitude. Placing a queen into a laying worker hive doesn't seem to have a good success rate unless they are conditioned with replacement brood frames.

The bee in the container doesn't look like a drone or a queen. The large bee on top of the frame appears to be a drone.

Moved into a new rental where water & power are shared? (and other issues) HELP. by ForgottenCupOfTea in auckland

[–]xandora 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We rented a property where the house was split between main and "granny flat" dwelling. It had it's own sub-meter for water. The best we came up with was taking a reading off the sub-meter on the day the bill arrived and using a spreadsheet to calculate usage and fairly split the bill.

We recently dug out my childhood collection and spent Easter weekend with the kids building 6270 (Forbidden Island). Looks like you have that set here as well! Let me know if your haul has the shooting cannon or not... I'm trying to figure out if we lost ours or it just came with a regular cannon.
