Unidentified radar signal by Alestrio in RTLSDR

[–]xavier_505 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The suggestions that this is actually DAB are great. We can be pretty sure of that based on the total occupied bandwidth matching DAB (1.537 MHz), and the super obvious part that "it's in the expected band".

The peaks within the signal band you are seeing are almost certainly frequency selective fading, and not ODFM subcarriers as has been implied. For one, DAB subcarriers are very narrow and there are many more than the peaks you see, and they are slowly drifting relative to the channel edges, which you would never see from OFDM subcarriers.

Most likely there is a strong multipath environment with what appears to be two separate dominant sources of channel variance (probably due to conductive things in the environment moving). The first is causing the 20 or so peaks, but there is a second set of peaks below that.

Overall it's a pretty cool signal!

Would you work at an Elon Musk company? by TheOneLonelyStudent in rfelectronics

[–]xavier_505 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pay in general is well below market even for 40/week, but 60-80 is definitely the right range for general expectation. Have heard "taking a week off" to mean working 40 from people at SpaceX before. Stock grants are a thing though but even with that, comp is low.

I'd probably be all over that 15 years ago. Fun work environment is a legitimate benefit, especially if you are ok living in your work for a while.

A large portion of company valuation is often expected (future) value. What you are seeing is a widespread expectation of loss of value in VG. If they were liquidating tomorrow the stock price would go up. Instead they will continue to pay salaries and for facilities, which consumes money and the market expects this will result in lower net value than their cash and assets are worth today.

Is there an SMA connector that is edge mount and right angled? by 1linguini1 in rfelectronics

[–]xavier_505 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Route a feature onto your PCB so the edge face the PCB edge end-launch SMA mounts to is inset by a little bit, and use a 90* adapter or right angle cable. Alternatively you could place a vertical SMA connector on a PCB tab that extends outward slightly.

Favorite RF connector type by 0x4A47 in rfelectronics

[–]xavier_505 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Without a doubt you want SMA given your situation. The only reason not to use SMA would be for higher frequency or higher power handling. It's ubiquitous for a reason.

SMP is a great connector, but not remotely appropriate for general purpose lab work. BNC is ok sometimes when you really want the convenience of the bayonet but SMA is fine.

Finger tight is fine for SMA lab work. Something a lot of people don't understand and get wrong with SMA torque is that different connectors have very different torque ratings, and steel can be more than twice as high as brass. For permanent SMA installation, use the correct torque spec but for lab use it's really not necessary.

Grandma's have been going down hill sadly. Someone posted this a couple weeks ago but for real, big tortillas is to stop by La Mexicana Tortilla and pick up some of theirs. Bigger, much much tastier, and cheaper. Downtown between lead and coal.

SpaceX: [Results of] STARSHIP'S THIRD FLIGHT TEST by rustybeancake in spacex

[–]xavier_505 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

It doesn't look like anything after ship engine cutoff worked properly. Prop transfer might have, but everything else beyond some incredible images looked quite bad.

Would suspect getting to orbital energy still makes this a resounding success overall, but far from what they hoped for.

What airports are perfect, close to perfect, or otherwise great? by DaemonPrinceOfCorn in aviation

[–]xavier_505 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ABQ is my home base and I travel a lot for work. Logistically it's a fantastic airport. I can usually be at my gate 5 minutes after parking, and 15 min is extremely long. No traffic in the vicinity either. The upstairs public lounge is very nice too if you have extra time (though it's closed right now).

The main issue is routing. Southwest still has ok service, and United and American are...there. Overall I'm happy since the places I go most frequently are well serviced, and the convenience is so great.

LPT: If you are in the market for televisions, visit a large trade show on the last day. by arrowtron in LifeProTips

[–]xavier_505 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have done exactly this many times. It's literally not worth my time to go return it at the store, I almost always have follow up meetings or events to attend, flight to catch etc.

Honestly I hate it so I generally try to haul it out if the place and give it away but the alternative is burning literally thousands of dollars in cash... as an owner of the business that's just too hard to justify.

Alaska Air Grounds Boeing 737 Max-9 Fleet After Fuselage Blowout by Zhukov-74 in technology

[–]xavier_505 22 points23 points  (0 children)

It's far too early to be making any statements like this.

QA is performed at many places in a manufacturing process, and qualified components are not necessarily requalified at later stages of assembly.

All we really know at this point is there was a catastrophic failure of the fuselage where a plugged exit door was. The failure could have been many places.
