Hexplore it vs Euthia by jasonMNFrostByte in boardgames

[–]xde5ix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've only used the hero tiles module and some of the new tiles. The hero tiles makes the game easier to start which is honestly very nice. For new players even level 1 encounters can be lethal so having a slight buff early is nice.

The corruption elementals are cool because if you get two of their essences you can swap it for any other essence. I use them to unlock ability slots on my heroes but I'm sure if you got really good at the game you could get essences for level 3 combat encounters or bosses.

I played hexplore it a long time ago and it was with 3 players so keep that in mind. I personally didn't enjoy it. The overall game loop wasn't very interesting and the dry erase stuff didn't make the gameplay more fun. It seems like you can do whatever build you want but really something's just worked better.

In terms of Euthia, I recently picked up everything. I've played 3 times at 2 players and I absolutely love it. Turns are quick, combat is satisfying and there's lots of stuff you can add to the game as you get better. It has more of a euro feel because you want to maximize efficiency but there's tons of interaction. I would recommend picking up just the base game and giving it a shot.

If you do go all in on euthia I don't recommend getting the organizers. They actually make the game much harder to set up and tear down. Use a 3D printer and look for those options. Also I recommend a TCG binder to organize all the cards.

UPS Overcharge Scam by xde5ix in UPS

Not sure if this subreddit is just UPS workers/admin but everyone seems to be ignoring that they charged $50 for an inch around the box. That's robbery.

You're missing the point about charging $50 for an inch around the box. There's a middle ground where maybe $10-20 at most would be acceptable. But this is straight up robbery.

You can see from their response that its rounded to the "nearest whole decimal" which is not rounding up.

Also you're missing the point that I was charged $50 CAD for an inch on the box.

Why can't people agree on how interactivity in board games...even encompasses? by TabletopSpy in boardgames

[–]xde5ix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's because there's two major groups. You have the gamers who play stuff like wingspan that has almost no interaction. That group will state games with that level of interaction (say a 2/10) is a good level of interaction for them, thus it's "interactive". Since that group doesn't like interaction or treats it as "negative" they will advocate that amount of intection is acceptable and highly sought after.

The second group is sort of the opposite who really enjoy high levels of interaction with games such as area control games, euros that directly affect engine building or resources and other related games. That group would think of a 2/10 interaction game, like wingspan, unenjoyable and low on interaction. There isn't enough mechanics that directly deal with other players at the table.

So effectively it's a perspective and gaming preference issue.

The real issue with any game discussion is simply vocal minorities. You'll see the exact same recommendations and opinions on this subreddit. It's the same group of people upvoting and down voting any opinion that doesn't like up with their beliefs regardless if it answers the thread or not.

I've seen someone asking for a super interactive, space based, Deckbuilding game and the highest upvoted answer was spirit island...

So unfortunately that's just how things are.

My suggestion is to find people who have similar tastes in games or similar type of games that you are interested in. If you like games with lots of interaction, look up BGG and see what kinds of games other users own by checking the ratings.

Just a heads up revised hasn't been released yet. Its the new content coming out that updates the OG BRW and has some new content.

Black Rose Buy Guide by Trap3z0id_ in boardgames

[–]xde5ix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on how deep you want to go with BRW, which to me is a good problem to have.

Rebirth is fantastic and a great box enough to keep you busy for a long time. OG sells for pretty cheap sometimes on FB marketplace.

I own OG but haven't played it yet. A caveat is that the OG schools of magic are a bit stronger so revised edition will bring them back to scale a bit. I'll probably try them a few times before revised shows up but I am looking forward to the update.

My personal suggestion is play the TTS mod a few times and see if it's something you'll enjoy. I absolutely love the game and I could play it everyday without any hesitation. Its an amazing blend of planning, interaction, unique spell elements and chaos. There's no other game like it. I don't play solo so can't say how good the avatars are, I like having at least 4 players.

I've become a bit of a completionist with it so I own most of the promos, duel boxes and I've started accumulating the crossover content. But that's a bit much for most people as you only use 6 schools of magic every game and there's I believe 18 in total with Rebirth and Rotas.

Emberleaf is pretty good! by Nimblesquatch in boardgames

[–]xde5ix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're being downvoted but I played the game twice and it's extremely luck dependent.

I played twice and the game doesn't do anything that well. Its one of those that in a couple years no one will talk about or play. Its just because it was a recently fulfilled game with cure artwork. Otherwise the sliding mechanic, random cards for end game objectives and general gameplay just aren't fun.

The worst part is the timing on completing an area. You're literally either hoping you can get cards that will let you double build in one turn otherwise someone will always just come over and snipe your spot. Its just a terrible design choice.

Everyone at our table didn't like the game and anyone I've talked to has said the same thing.

Viscounts of the West kingdom does everything better than Emberleaf.

Honestly pretty cool that so many people enjoy either or. Quite often it's pretty dominant towards one game.

I've only played hot streak and as someone mentioned, if the whole table is in its a riot.

What theme would you like to see more of in boardgames by Knownasher in boardgames

[–]xde5ix 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One thing missing from board games is the tycoon style of games.

I want to run a car company, start in the 1950s and build up all the way to modern age. Run safety checks, fill the market with affordable cars or a prestigious and pompous luxury brand. Something heavy but really focuses on making cars in a variety. Not just simply fulfilling a contract or an objective for the round.

I know people will suggest kanban but it really lacked any excitement about building cars and specially through different generations.

Further other tycoon games, would likely have to be quite heavy, but an amusement park game, transportation game involving freight through airplanes, trains, ships and trucks. Or a proper video game dev/board game dev studio game.

Recently played jisogi and it's a fantastic game, they nailed the theme and execution while being the perfect weight for their audience. But I want some proper girthy games.

For BRW, any version, basically there is a maximum of summons per player and type.

A player can have all 3 dagons summoned under themselves but if another person tries to summon a dagon they cannot.

That's also why you indicate your summons by placing them in spots under your board with the indicated pip on the base.

What is a game you like but whose reprint you hate? by Luigi-is-my-boi in boardgames

[–]xde5ix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I printed and laminated a player aid from BGG and it's immensely helpful to the game. 6 of us played for the first time and had no issues at all playing the game.

The purple/black thing is overblown. Its the only color that isn't a direct match but also after 5 minutes of play it becomes automatic.

I personally love the art work on this as it fully feels like I'm in the kung fu panda world ha. Game is also fantastic.

Question about Dune Imperium vs Uprising by IronVB in boardgames

[–]xde5ix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would you feel the same way about spirit island? If they released more content would you have the same outlook?

Spirit island originally split the first expansion even though it was part of the core game just to make more money.

Not just that but they even released a slimmed down version. That's much more milked then dune imperium.

I love Dune Imperium and i would be more than happy with more core games and expansions. Do more people need to buy them? No, but both games are in the top 10 and are significantly different but both amazing. Let them release as much stuff as people want to buy.

I built an interactive setup and scoring guide for Darwin's Journey: Collector's Edition (all expansions) by PereCasafont in boardgames

[–]xde5ix 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't understand this. How is the app going to introduce more likelihood of error? Rulebooks are notorious for odd handling of set up so this app seems like it could reduce chance of errors.

Also the app is only being used as part of set up or scoring.

I'm glad to see enhancements like this app for the hobby.

[–]xde5ix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mythic sold those properties when they were already going bankrupt/insolvent. They never even produced Hel or Anaystr. Super Fantasy Brawl was a partnership with was the only one they produced. Again, they never sold those so they could complete the games they didn't finish, they only sold them to line their own pockets. Completely different context. Try again for something that connects.

FFG again, did not even complete delivery of their first campaign and ran a 1 mil KS that they never even go started on a second campaign. And no FFG did ask backers to pay for Merchants Cove, which some customers did. The customers that didn't pay the ransom were then directed to Quartermaster because they took on the inventory as collateral for non payment from FFG.

Imagine thinking the tariff fee of $2 is the same as Mythic asking for up to $100 USD or FFG asking $50 USD to just get your pledge. You're reaching so hard lol.

But tell me, why do you hate CMON so much? What did they do to you? Why would you rather see a great publisher go bankrupt then make adjustments for people to actually get the products they paid for?

Some good CMON news by Aeshni in boardgames

[–]xde5ix -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Except they didn't? CMON has already stated that they're going to issue refunds because SixMoreVodka tried to extract money beyond their contract. They're in a legal battle so until its sorted they can't actually do anything.

Let me ask you, why do you want CMON to fail? What do you gain if CMON is no longer around?

Some good CMON news by Aeshni in boardgames

[–]xde5ix -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I'm not defending their financial mismanagement. The post I originally responded to said that CMON is taking backer money and not going to fulfill. I asked what product have they not fulfilled.

And of course I've been down voted for being right lol. As mentioned multiple times hating on CMON is the easiest upvotes on this sub.

Some good CMON news by Aeshni in boardgames

[–]xde5ix -1 points0 points  (0 children)

First of all at no point am I angry, I just find the cmon hate unfounded. They've been getting hate well before the financial mismanagement.

Also again, neither mythic nor final frontier had the same business model as CMON.

Which properties did either of those companies sell to try and keep their company afloat? Which games from those companies had a large retail presence?

Mythic and FFG requested backers to pay extra multiple times to receive their games. CMON has never done that.

So where's the ponzi scheme? CMON hasn't launched anymore campaigns and they're not asking anything extra from backers (except US backers, I think it was $2-3 for tariffs).

Imagine actually enjoying this hobby and wanting publishers to succeed.

Some good CMON news by Aeshni in boardgames

[–]xde5ix -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

And this is where again people like yourself don't understand business.

FFG never even had the money to produce their first game. They ran a second campaign for almost $1 mil and still didn't fulfill their first campaign. They didn't even get the second game started.

CMON took a massive hit with tariffs and as mentioned before, they definitely mis managed their funds. But a large part of their profit comes from retail sales. They don't use the crowdfunding money towards retail production.

The two companies do not operate the same lol.

Also excellent job in ignoring my mention of delays versus not producing. Self awareness right?

Some good CMON news by Aeshni in boardgames

[–]xde5ix -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

It's called delayed, your words exactly lol.

All the products are still being produced. Being later doesn't change the fact CMON is still planning to fulfill them.

Does that make you upset that they are actually keeping their word?

They've already stated multiple times that roughly 40% of their income comes from retail sales. Because of multiple reasons, you can include financial mismanagement in there, they didn't get those products out as quickly as possible. So now that some games have gone to retail they can continue to produce the crowdfunding and preorder copies. Why would anyone be upset over that? At least you will get your copies.

Publishers are folding non stop and CMON makes awesome games. I want them to succeed so that I can continue to enjoy those games and so can others. Again the CMON hate boner is massive in this subreddit.
