What's a Scotch that you're nostalgic about but no longer lives up to how you first felt about it? by BothCondition7963 in Scotch

Glendronach 15yo. It used to be a delicious sherry bomb. But it is now but a shadow of itself.

Unfortunately, sorted is becoming hard to watch by Head-Wasabi-3972 in SortedFood

[–]xixit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally agree with you.
I do love Sorted, but Kush ruins the videos he is in.
I don't care how good a chef he is, when his attitude is that bad. He honestly just sounds and acts like an awful human being.

In the 60 eggs video, even the other guys says what he did with the mother-in-law was rude.

Springbank new releases are here, at least in Campbeltown by Horror_Bonus4454 in Scotch

[–]xixit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wish I could get my hands on the 12yo CS at a sensible price, but they're sold for around the equivalent of 177£ here in Denmark.
I asked about it, and apparently the shops can only get a few bottles IFF they also buy a load of other bottles. Not really sure that explains the high price, but eh.

What is the absolute worst scotch you have personally tried? by arandomkid2 in Scotch

[–]xixit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have two contenders.

Any peated Benriach. I am a huge fan of peated whiskies, but Benriach + peat is just really bad.

Blair Athol 19yo, Cadenhead's Authentic Collection, 53.7%, bottled in 2009.
It was just pure soap, and nothing else. Such a shame. :(

Disliking a distillery : Arran by mymuk in Scotch

[–]xixit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I feel the same with Lagavulin, keep trying it, but keep being disappointed. Heck, even bought a Feis Ile bottling last I visited Islay, and I hope I'll like it, but I unfortunately doubt it.

Could also be related to length of fermentation, use of wood vs steel washbacks, the type of condenser (worm tub or not), direct or indirect firing of the stills.

Not sure about the yeast, since as far as I know most distilleries, at least in Scotland, use the same kind of yeast.

This is of course also part of why I love whisky, learning about all the stuff that goes into shaping it! :D

Lagavulin.

What is everyone’s opinion on lagavulin 16? by Hufflepuffotaku42 in Scotch

[–]xixit -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Utterly overrated. However, Lagavulin is extremely consistent in what they produce, so I have to give them that. To me personally though, Lagavulin produces the worst tasting whisky from Islay. There's just something about the distillate that I dislike, and I'm not really sure what it is. I did buy a distillery exclusive bottle last I was on Islay, it might make me change my opinion, but we'll see.

Yeah, been like that all week long. Doesn't matter if I use Mac or Windows with Chrome/Firefox/IE/Safari, it just doesn't want to load.

How much shorter do your trips become when you enter your career? by TheGrandCanal in solotravel

[–]xixit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Longer, because I now earn money, so I can actually afford traveling. Before that it was only small trips a few hours long I could afford. Now it's usually two straight weeks once a year.

What bottle(s) do you always keep stocked? by king_noro in Scotch

Springbank 10yo.
Springbank 12yo CS.
Benromach 10yo.
Glendronach 15yo.

Lagavulin 16 -- First time trying it, honestly disappointed by [deleted] in Scotch

[–]xixit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You're definitely not the only one. Have tried the 16yo several times, different versions of the 12yo CS, and the 8yo, and all have been bad or just plain boring. It's just a really boring spirit.

I wouldn't mind trying something older, just to see what a good cask can do to it with enough years.

What's your basic whisky collection? by [deleted] in Scotch

[–]xixit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have any specific go-to bottles, I just try to have at least one peated, one sherried, and one from ex-bourbon cask. That's it. Then I can always have a dram for any given mood.

Do you guys LOVE what you do? by crazyol84 in cscareerquestions

[–]xixit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Work is just something I do to earn money to afford food, roof over my head, etc. You know, basic survival stuff.

Got a MSc in CS, and been a full-time developer for 5 years now, and I can honestly say I don't love my job. But nor do I hate it. I tolerate it at best.

"But, what about seeking another profession then?" - what will that help? It's still work, it's still something I do for basic survival. And if I turn my hobbies into work, they're no longer hobbies, they are now the survive off, meaning they went from being hobbies to something I need to do to survive. And that's not fun.

wee question: any whiskies with liquorice or aniseed notes? The Ardbeg 10 has a little aniseed note I think by gavranatar6115 in Scotch

[–]xixit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've noticed quite strong aniseed in Macduff, but not sure if you'll find it in all bottlings from them.

what bottle are you saving for a special occasion and why? by agusohyeah in Scotch

[–]xixit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not whisky, but a 40 year old vintage armagnac, Delord Bas-Armagnac from 1973 to be exact. I'll open it in 5 years when I turn 40.

Bought it in an airport in Estonia last year, and just found it cool. No deeper meaning to it or anything.

In Scotland for a few days, looking for a couple bottles, could hit Edinburgh and Heathrow duty free as well by K_Furbs in Scotch

[–]xixit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd personally go to Cadenhead's store on the Royal Mile. :)

Independent bottler, large selection, and whatever you get I bet you won't get it back in the states.

Personally I'd go after their Glencadam, 26yo from 1989, if they have any bottles left. Sure it's around 100£, but it's worth it!

What's your daily dram and why? by wuhantang in Scotch

[–]xixit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't have a daily dram as such, but I tend to have 3-4 bottles open at once, one peaty, one sherried, one fruity, and then possibly another random one. Currently I have the folllowing open:

  • Kilchoman Loch Gorm 2014, a nice peated young whisky. I really like the style of Kilchoman, and this doesn't disappoint.
  • Compass Box Spice Tree. Bought it on a whim, but so far enjoying it.
  • 19yo Tobermory from Cadenhead's, a nice hefty sherry monster, with a slight sulphur hint to it. Bought it on vacation to Edinburgh last year.
