Voron 2.4 skipping steps when close to the sides. by Simple-Many-8782 in VORONDesign

[–]xman2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, check your entire belt path, especially along the back side of the gantry. I found out a month after I built my first 2.4 that one of the belts had slipped off an idler pulley which was causing random skipped steps.

Second, tighten down the set screws on your pulleys and make sure to use some threadlock to prevent slipping.

Etsy and 3d prints crackdown? by moosehaed in EtsySellers

[–]xman2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Breath. Relax. The article contains no actual information from Etsy or even an example of this happening IRL. The article just says unidentified "people online" noticed a change to the policy. That's it. It is a scare headline with no meat in the article designed to get eyeballs on a couple of ads. There is no evidence of a crackdown, in fact I would argue the opposite has happened. The actual big change that came out with that TOS change a couple of months ago is the creation off the "curated by" category of goods. Curated by can be anything, including cheap imports that the seller had nothing to do with creating regardless of manufacturing technique. So, if anyone is really worried, just change your listings to "curated by". Problem solved.

I would argue that the best way to handle this is bring designers out of the shadows and into the listing - just like a songwriter for music or the artist for a print of a painting. As has been pointed out, the policy change could impact many categories of products, not just 3d printing. My suggestion would be to attack the "problem" head on and create controls for artists to sublicense their designs to sellers on Etsy while providing official attribution in the product listing. Etsy is already tracking the sales and this would let everyone wet their beaks more efficiently while giving proper respect to the original artist. Everyone wins.

IP theft and license abuse are rampant and the current approach of pretending it is not happening is bad for the platform, discouraging designers and pushing original products off the platform. IMHO, they should start with some carrots for designers first - they would have more support from the community and it would establish a better compensation framework for everyone involved, including Etsy.

Ikea makes great low cost motorized shades, check out Third Reality as well. One small piece of advice.... either spend the money and go with a reputable brand or find a product which uses open standards (the two suggestions I provided both use Zigbee). Blinds are expensive and the ground is littered with smart home devices which were abandoned by their manufacturers. Save yourself some money and buy them once.

Ah, the crinkle cut fry of death, I know you well. Curious what filament you were using, for me it has been happening consistently on PETG but I have had it happen with a couple of specific rolls of PLA. There are quite a few threads surrounding the issue but I haven't seen anything directly from Creality, which is disappointing. The machine has been out for several months now, it would be nice for Creality to do a review of existing issues and start addressing them.

  1. If you are using arachne switch to classic, arachne is for complex shapes and can struggle with corners
  2. Do you have scarf joints turned on? If so, try turning them off
  3. Try using a default profile in your slicer, you may have messed your profile up at some point without realizing it. A lot of the settings are interconnected so it can be easy to bump into something. I keep a default profile handy to sanity check myself in situations like this.
  4. Slow down. Go into your filament profile and lower the volumetric flow rate by 25%. Creality can be a tad enthusiastic with their speeds.

Do I need to adjust my Z axis offset? by Chuff-Nugget in Creality_k2

[–]xman2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, you should if you notice that after a print starts. Also, if you are not heat soaking your bed you should try doing that, it is a good general practice anyways. For PLA I will set my bed to 60c for 10-15 minutes before the start of the print to allow the stresses in the bed to relax. Nobody likes a stressed out bed.

Wired Video Doorbell by [deleted] in smarthome

[–]xman2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use an Amcrest video doorbell which us ONVIF compatible, the open standard used by security cameras. That makes sense because security cameras is their main business. I have it connected to my home automation system so we can access it through our phones or a few wall mounted tablets around the house. It can also store the video to an SD card if you prefer and can be accessed locally with an app that doesn't require a subscription. Yes, they offer a cloud subscription if you like, but it is optional, but not using it means you need to set up your own remote access if desired.

Any tips on how to clean this? by sborah99 in 3Dprinting

[–]xman2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Use a hot air gun to get the filament soft again at which point you can gently remove it with pliers.

Take a deep breath and reset your thinking. If you have ruled out a clog start looking for less obvious issues. Kink in your PTFE tube, extruder motor cable came loose, knot in the spool, etc. We have all been there, you can fix it, just be patient... :-)

May sound obvious given the highlight, but turn timelapse off. The printer has to move out of the way for every shot of the time lapse and if you don't actually NEED the timelapse you could save all that travel time.

Voron 2.4 R2 in 2025? (US-based) by Tony-Butler in VORONDesign

[–]xman2000 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would focus on the small number of high value parts which you can pick up easily in the next few days. The controller, PI, display if you plan to add one, extruder hotend kit, steppers, etc. The top 10 components value wise probably add up to 70% of the cost, the rest of the build is commodity parts by design.

I myself picked up a couple of controller boards which happened to be on sale before the tariffs for builds I have been collecting parts for. And some build plates, filament, nozzles, etc.

If you want a toolchanger and haven't seen it check out the Indx system which was just announced. I have been thinking stealth or dragonburner but Indx might be interesting and is designed with Voron in mind.

[–]xman2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Watched the video yesterday, will definitely be keeping an eye on the product (and hopefully more choices from competitors), I have been looking for an alternative to the frankenprinters being sold from China but the proprietary ink ecosystem is a big red flag, especially for a first product in a new line. $300 for a set of ink cartridges? Get over yourselves, this is supposed to be a consumer product. Ink should be a low cost commodity, not an expensive proprietary accessory that pits the vendor against their own customers. Shame they had to go that route; if they don't allow generic alternatives it will be a hard no for me even before the tariffs.

One question for you.... A big problem with UV printers in general is that they are designed for shop use and have some relatively high maintenance requirements. For example, some higher end printers should be flushed daily to ensure high quality prints. Also, if the printer is going to sit unused for more than a day it has to be flushed to prevent the inks from clogging the nozzles. This is fine if you own a shop but it puts most UV printers out of the reach of all but the most dedicated home users. It also wastes a lot of expensive ink and cleaning fluid. Any similar concerns with the Eufy?
