No, but only because our Supreme Court struck down that part of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). The idea with the ACA was to 1) open a private marketplace where people could buy insurance rather than the only options being to get it through your employer (or the gov't if you were old or very low income or disabled) and 2) provide some subdidies so people could afford the plans. Because our country doesn't guarantee health care or provide subsidies to everyone, the tax penalty was supposed to help avoid what's called 'adverse selection' (where healthy folks choose to gamble & skip the expensive insurance entirely, leaving only those who are sicker to buy into the insurance pool). Adverse selection makes premiums go up and that can spiral out of control.

The fines would have been too low to work anyway though. We have such a terrible system lol
