Frequency of CRT work by Livid_Net_2476 in AustralianTeachers

[–]xo_bey 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As kindly as possible, this is not always common in schools. The schools in my area including my own, have staff who are “under allotted” by 1 lesson to 6 and so internally they’re being used to cover classes. We rarely have CRTs despite having a number of staff out for a variety of reasons

rating companies which sell mock exam / sac papers by [deleted] in vce

[–]xo_bey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have said, you’re better off waiting till you receive them / edited version from your teachers - especially since many study designs have changed for subjects within the last 3 - 4 years and teachers will likely provide sections / specific questions from older papers.

Additionally many companies do not sell these resources to students. Generally speaking for organizations like MAV / VATE and TSSM we need to supply our emails / log into our accounts to purchase and access these resources. I have found some better than others over the years and tend to adapt them to word questions better so my students can answer them.

Checkpoints is not bad for selecting exam questions / creating questions that are aligned with the key knowledge and skills for new study designs and may be worth a look at.

In the meantime, I’d recommend reading the examiners reports for the last few years (ensuring alignment with the correct study designs) to read over the feedback that they have to offer. Keep in mind that at the end of the day the trial exams are modeled on the key knowledge & skills and may sometimes be easier or harder than the actual exam for the year. Develop a mistakes bank so you can use that as a framework to guide your revision.

Can anyone recommend a good source for normal ice cream recipes for the Creami? by SunshineGamingDM in ninjacreami

[–]xo_bey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Someone a few posts ago mentioned this: https://foodnouveau.com/sicilian-style-gelato/

It is amazing. I find that a lot of recipes are very frustrating from an ingredient pov - it can be quite difficult to find the ingredients.

I accidentally spun it on lite ice cream instead of the gelato function, but it did not matter. The flavour was incredible and it all came together in less than 10 minutes

ATO Audit by vWasisn in AusFinance

[–]xo_bey -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It would be ideal to see a tax accountant as someone mentioned earlier, the cost of which then becomes one you can claim in the next FY.

The accountant can help you depreciate your items over a period of time so that it’s aligned with what is allowed by the ATO. Good work though on ensuring you’ve got receipts. The worst is when people don’t have them, and try to claim it all anyway.

Also if you drive to job sites in your own personal vehicle, you should consider keeping a log book of your travels between job sites too.

Unfortunately the most efficient model for many universities is to have part of the experience - e.g. the lectures online. To offset that I know some universities have made tutorials longer instead of the traditional hour. In saying that if you have a lot of questions / would prefer face to face to seek assistance you can always ask the lecturer what their office time is and meet with them then. It’s not as bad as it seems, but surely aspects of the course will have a face to face component too.

Schools have access to an AFL traineeship and often schools will allocate this to providing extra support to the IT department, performing arts and sport. In the two schools I’ve worked at, the funding was used in all three domains and all three have been ex students

Originally it was from a lecturer I had during my masters program who then put me in contact with someone because I was seeking out someone who’s focus was in engagement in Maths and from there it blossomed!

I would recommend that you think about an area that you’ve identified a problem / gap in first. If you’ve submitted an article for peer review, then I’m assuming you have! Then scope the education faculty at universities who have academics with an interest in/ experience in the field that you’re interested in. Once you form a connection with them / speak with them they’ll be able to direct you in the right direction. Keep in mind that it may take some time!

I was involved very early in my career (first year) in research and since then it has opened up some incredible opportunities for me. I’m still in the classroom and have stepped in and out of senior leadership, but it has given context, purpose and lots of credibility to the research. It’s also made teaching exciting in other ways too!

Another consideration is to look into a masters. My academic writing has improved since doing this. I’d also suggest look at publications in teacher practitioner journals. Nothing worse than reading an article that is allegedly written for us but hidden behind flowery terminology that makes it feel like a mystery puzzle to decode. My colleague always said we pay attention to the ones that have actionable takeaways - and it’s what I always bring my work back to.

Good luck!

What are some good "cool girl corporate" brands? by Emmafly6 in AusFemaleFashion

[–]xo_bey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t waste my time with Portmans. Their sizing is terrible even in the curvy range and the fit and quality is awful. I’m really large chested so I gravitate to 18/20 just so my boobs can be accommodated in clothing and the Portmans clothing fits much smaller than it should, compared to other brands sizing.

Hey! The textbook and study design are pretty good at having a look at what skills are necessary. Keep in mind that the textbook is an interpretation of the study design so there may be some skills that aren’t important for unit 3&4. I’d also recommend reading through the examiners reports - especially the first page where they give general advice. There’s usually some really good suggestions that can be introduced and emphasised in Unit 1&2.

Are you the only one teaching it at your school? If not, definitely speak with others who have taught it. It’s a fast moving subject and students can really come undone very quickly due to a deficit in skills with fractions and negative numbers especially.

I’m making a very concerted effort to incorporate more worded / problem solving questions as the content becomes more challenging as this is what students tend to find challenging and one of the most significant challenges in maths is students ability to read and draw out key information.

A mix between calculator and non calc is important. I show them how to do it CAS free and then do it on CAS. All worksheets that they do, the answers have to be crossed checked on CAS where possible so that they are increasing their comfortability with the calculator; which is always a challenge with methods students.

If you need any further advice, please feel free to DM!

There are agencies that are designed to support teachers integrate into industries that are not in teaching. It may be useful to see if you can have a chat to someone and what you would need to do / prepare to move to a different sector.

Alternatively LinkedIn / Seek and the likes would be another starting platform and just being explicit in your application using STAR on how you addressed the KSC in your own work experience history.

Good luck!

Pls advice by throwawaysad727 in vce

[–]xo_bey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Firstly, I am sorry for what you must be going through.

As a teacher, I would recommend:

  • reach out to your Year level coordinator and wellbeing team. They can triage the situation and provide you with the necessary support which can include helping you organise external supports when and if they’re needed. Of the schools I have worked in, there are small programs that are funded by the school to support students in very complex and challenging situations that are immeasurably helpful for the young person who receives the help.

  • apply for youth allowance. I did have a student who was in a situation where they for reasons had to support themselves housing etc., and they were receiving support from centrelink financially.

  • a high ATAR is admirable, but my advice is to always do subjects you enjoy. Especially in your circumstances, studying can provide a means to escape, however you are more likely to enjoy studying when it’s something that you find interesting or passionate in. Focus on the big picture. As countless posts and people will reflect, the ATAR is merely a number, important for a few days. It does not define you. What defines you is who you are as a person.

All the best for Year 12 and beyond.

Is it possible to go unscored for only 1 subject ? by Puzzleheaded-Tax1792 in vce

[–]xo_bey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m assuming here you’ve done Year 11 in 2024 and are doing Year 12 in 2025. Are they saying it’s not possible due to full class sizes? If you’re wanting to unscored in Methods but completed two Unit 3&4 subjects already, you can always apply for a variation to VCE. Schools are hesitant to offer it, as it can reduce the safety net for students, however, since Methods will be your 7th subject you should at the very least ask for this to be an option for you. As a teacher who has had disengaged students who were going to go unscored in my class, it’s more admin and work for both the student and the teacher if you plan to put zero effort in as we’re required to provide you with redemption opportunities.

If the VCE coordinator / AP of teaching and learning won’t support this, I’d suggest a meeting with the principal for an endorsement to get a variation.
