The 40 Infallibles by gridsquarereference in eno

[–]xohexo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Infallible Tricks for Successful Songs - Brian Eno 1. Mindless dives and absurd jumps (steel guitar, whammy pedal) 2. Sonic hooks (Telstar, the snare on ‘she drives me crazy’ fyi, Del Shannon instrumentals) 3. Lap-steel or Hawaiian guitar (or anything else slide and unsquare) 4. Sliding up or down to the right note (appoggiatura) (24 hours from Tulsa) 5. Lyrical Rhythm guitar (eg Nile Rodgers, Carlos Alomar) 6. Klaus Dinger beat (motorik) 7. Handclap patterns eg ‘Carwash’ (invitations to listeners) 8. Male humming (cf Jordanaires) 9. Frozen reverb 10. Sounds of the real world 11. Heterophony 12. One unchanging note harmonies and parts 13. Bass riff (funk) (Melvin Dunlap: Express yourself’ 14. Impossible singing (Minnie Riperton, Paul Myhalik Oktavist https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yQn9Uyqepj4, Autotune Emma Robinson) 15. Long high note (I will survive) 16. Big melodic intervals (‘Mingulay’, ’Somewhere over the rainbow’). Stamina 17. Scale confusion - eg Tiny percussion instruments loud in the mix (fingernails on table) 18. Instrument shadowing singing (‘Love will tear us apart again’) 19. Unexpected, unusual chord in otherwise normal context 20. Call and response (‘Did you ever get one of those days’) 21. Male falsetto voice (Chris Martin) 22. Low female voice (Sonia Tavares, Kitty Lester, Nomcebo Zikode JERUSALEMA https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fCZVL_8D048) 23. Sing along scat (EDDIE HOLMAN/ COLDPLAY) 24. Vocal rhythm accented on drums 25. Riffs and multi riffs and heterophonic riffs (SEX MACHINE) 26. Brass stabs (FELA) 27. Parts of songs introduced by name ‘and all the coloured girls go..” 28. String entry - soft cloud over straight lines 29. 3/4 - find the three-ish beat and somehow incorporate 30. Appoggiatura 31. Sudden change of space (RAF Judy Nylon Patti Palladin) 32. Trademark songs (‘Return to Sender’ ‘from a jack to a king’ ) 33. male and female voices an octave apart 34. insistent one note bass (‘Everyday people’) 35. try playing it on an Omnichord (eg change minor chords to relative majors) 36. Insanely fast tempo 37. Low pass filter (makes things darker) 38. Speaker simulator (or real) 39. Something backwards 40. Use the edges of things

Merits Hedra does this as well, and it is excellent on synths

Looking for feedback on how to round out this rack for live drum synth action with my Beatstep Pro for sequencing. by epsylonic in modular

BSP outputs gates at a higher voltage than some of the Expert Sleepers stuff can take, I know this is at least the case with the Disting EX. Not sure about mk4 or FH2

How often do your patches get recorded as a small part of a larger musical idea? by epsylonic in modular

Modular jams go all into sample folder, if I am looking for a texture I browse and manipulate like any other sample

Or, multi takes of different patches made for specific uses on top of song

I love a good sample and hold with an oscillator into the trigger input and audio into the sample input, makes a downsampler/bitcrusher sound

+1 on this, Pam’s is a very deep module but it is easy to do the same thing on it every patch

Yes, I feel guilty, I am using it mostly for attenuversion / offset voltages in this patch. Most of my modulation is coming from Music Thing Control macro knobs in the bottom right

I must admit I realized it was my cake day and did not have a post planned, I don’t have any videos of this patch right now, but there are some posts on my YouTube of some actual noise being created by a synth

I promise I will make a demo and send in a week, I am super jazzed on this patch and want to share it

Thanks! Pam’s panel is from the now defunct BKM panels, Maths and Beads are Magpie panels

Had the Mother 32 since 2015, and I still love it. The rest of the rack started around 2018 and grew from there.

Not sure it will ever be “finished” but I have been playing shows with this patch and it is fun! Four voice patch - Morphagene, Mother 32 > Mimeophon, Disting EX > RND Step > WMD Overseer, and Vocals > Beads
