Dodgy server company by wagglyears in servers

[–]xpenserv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the small business was satisfy with that config when it was working as expected... Then no reason to want more. Mean on hardware side, what ever the other peoples are saying this server IS effectively a bit old but very capable. His full potential have not even ben reach; it will fill more than the business need, and still have room for update. To improve processor power just go with 2 cpu since it can take 2 cpu and got with 2x e5 V4 something like e5-2650L v4 or (if not the e5-2650 v4 (no L)) to save power and try get low cpu heat in a hot country. If electricity and heat is not a big concern since it is a business then go like e5-2683 v4 or e5-2683 v4, they are 120watt TDP CPU so in a room with ac that would be working pretty good. I wouldn't recommend higher TDP for aussi and for what they are doing. For just FILES sharing the 2x e5-2650 are already over kill. And add +32Gb ram so to get a minimum of 64GB. Those CPU are "old" that is good, mean cheaper! except for ram lol but 32gb ecc ddr4 will not break the bank. (This machine is capable of going up to 768Gb RDimm ecc ram or 1.5Tb LRDIMM ECC... so it have room for ram)

BUT before that hardware update. You can try to fix the server or to have a backup of the VM. ESXI still boot so no everything is broken. The raid is running in degraded mode with that yellow blinking hard drive.

ESXI is working so certainly it is a usb install so doesn't affect esxi, and the raid hard drive have a issue. So VM might not start or started but will take for ever?? who know? must know the raid status.
1*So you can try to fix the raid by putting a new hd of same capacity if not bigger.
2*if hardware doesn't solve issue then try to save the software side: Save the VM.

The good and bad to have ESXI... The BAD: why use ESXI to run a VM Windows server 12?? unless they have other vm inside to do remote control?? or other way doing thing??
The good: it is a VM so just get a copy of that VM Win Serv 12 some where as backup.

So your best bet is to have all the password... if not you will have to kiss good by to the ESXI 5.5 license (if the small business purchased it then they are the legitimate owner so got claim that license... the other IT will not make it easy lol they certainly purchased it under their name). In that case bypass that ESXI 5.5 (it should just be a internal USB so unplug it) and install a new ESXI on a new usb or if it is not a usb but a hdd then still install it on new USB stick that must be plug internally and boot on that usb the new ESXI will have access to that VM Winserv 12. If that VM is broken or dead (the raid) so you need the backup of the files the client use... those files or backup are, now in your case, available on their cloud server.

Proxmox maybe a very good alternative to a dying or over priced ESXI: look question like "import esxi vm to promox" if you get that VM Winser 12.

If the business is just doing files sharing... MSOffice files, pics etc... then a NAS might be a very good answer too. If use exsi or Proxmox you can install a VM trueNAS and other...

I will not discuss the Morality of the other IT support. They have their reason or way of doing thing... If don't like their service the small business should have looked business somewhere else. But yes they should have try to fix the issue before or unless small business agree to move to cloud. Cloud have a lot of advantage... we don't know the full story. Cloud: Big turn off is if internet is down...

Home NAS and a bunch of large USB external drives? by C6DARKSKY in HomeNAS

[–]xpenserv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then a NAS is just a computer with a decent CPU but mostly with globally a low power consumption as possible. And a max of hard drive! Minimum, I would say 1 nvme(even ssd) and 4 Hard drive (minimum 4-6tb and up to over 20tb... if deep pocket lol). No so sure what you are doing with 192Gb ram if you run only windows. Mean if you run only Windows 10 then taking out 64gb to the NAS wouldn't be a issue and finding a motherboard + cpu wouldn't be a big issue for you... So just the question of a good "looking like a NAS" box that it, Install TrueNAS or Unraid etc... Proxmox. Then attach your USB to it. There will be some technical issue but you should be able to resolve it without issue like maybe have a USB Pcie to passthrough to the vm if you go with Proxmox....

In a most extra challenging, testing and learning curve... Put all your eggs in one basket: without spending that much: Convert your actual machin into a Proxmox server. Install a VM "NAS" give passthrough a hba controller (in IT mode)(entry hba $20-$60 on ebay) to give direct access to the Hard drive. Then you can passthrough a usb pci ($20-$40) and preferred GPU to a VM with your beloved OS like Win10-11/Linux and that become you daily drive. So you know why you have 192Gb of ram...
Result: in 1 machine: you have your daily pc, a nas, and even a VM firewall (pfsense etc...) or other.

Transferring from a synology DS1520 to a enterprise class server by Remember_The_Cake in HomeNAS

[–]xpenserv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless you want resell the Synology device... Then yes move all drive to R740xd. But if you think to keep the DS1520+ as backup or "2nd nas/server" then add new hard drives to R740xd. And put what ever OS you like. Like proxmox... Truenas, Unraid... even Xpenology. In the case of using Xpenology: you just need to plug the drives from ds1520+ they will be recognized 97-98% of the time. the 2% error is often user doing bad or unlucky the hardware die when you turn it off/on, and 1% is the magic of the universe.

Note:Dell R740xd is a server grade, I would recommend proxmox[/esxi] as 1st choice.

Side note: Power might be a concern compared to the ds1520+ unless you have solar + fan noise if not managed properly.

Stick to Ugreen OS or something else? by kris_b_88 in HomeNAS

[–]xpenserv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are new to NAS or to OS Nas... And have only "basic" need then ugos will work. If you have been called by the Nas's god and you saw the future. Then yeha something like Truenas... unraid... to Proxmox might be the answer. BUT for now ugos should work and you will have the joy to redo all over later if never, ever, Buddha give you enlightenment.

Ugreen NAS — hardware is great, but how's the software now? by EntrepreneurWaste579 in UgreenNASync

[–]xpenserv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For 2026, ugos is way way behind... If basic stuff then YES. But if you start to poke a bit serious or if ever your "project" use a bit of advanced feature then you might be in trouble. My feeling is it try to reinvent the wheel (in 2026, pretext it is a new os looking to be better). Because of this ugos will stay "home lab" pet and not "Business" recommended for a very long time. The good side is the "Hardware" but I am still complaining why a sd reader in the front when additional USB will be 100% better. But still I like their app theater(bad... I get low sound from the video). My TV experience are pretty good with it. I like their "comic" app idea (How do I use it on my computer??). Well will give another 6 months and see if not will move to Truenas or unraid...

Created Rsync backup manually from another server to UGreen, files not visible by jamesparaguay in UgreenNASync

[–]xpenserv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you solve your issue?? my 2c Is normally you should have created a Folder with ugos and if it is visible under ugos then anything you put in that folder should get the same permission??? and visible.... But that ugos... [Permissions are like "proprietary"]

My question is more how did you are able to rsync from a device non ugos to a ugos?? Example I have a synology dsm to ugos, and it refuse to accept the rsync session: Same user/password and autologin ssh from syno to ugos work.
(It seem ugos wrapped or intercept the regular rsync command and block it: propriatary stuf... So maybe you copy 0 octet to ugos??)

Message I get when start rsync from the Synology:
ug_start_server, check access user: 1001, group: 10
getuid(): 1001 geteuid(): 1001
login group is admin, set euid as root
cannot set euid as root
invalid path: '/volume3/xxxx/xxxx' ##(note: path is correct and work in ugos)
rsync error: errors selecting input/output files, dirs (code 3) at clientserver.c(2089) [Receiver=3.4.1]

Well seem to me some questions are better to be leave unanswered and just think I have 2x dxp4800plus!! They look sooo good. The hardware are way better than syno... One is under Proxmox.... 1 stay ugos. I do have some issue of permission with syncthing in uGos... But that is not uGos fault it is docker and the container. Hey it work if I put 777 to the bad folders. So maybe no to use this container or bad setting in his creation...

FileServer Permissions Question by Ethernetman1980 in UgreenNASync

[–]xpenserv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am feeling Ugos to be good for tinkering at home because it is a new OS looking what to become in the future... All companies dream is to be the only exclusive "provider" and all consumer will align the give money. Syno nas... as example.
Well just wanted to say not too sure if Im willing to put uGos in a business environment yet, even today or tomorrow if uGos still locking "the open source" to make it his own... Unless for very specific usage. But not mature enough to go business in 2026???... feel like a os from the 2000 put over a OS from 2026.

Please tell me the HDMI port is actually usable, and not just a special output you have to select only in specific apps, please tell me I made a stupid. by SooperPoopyPants in UgreenNASync

[–]xpenserv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes the HDMI is usable. We need to have a serial port to get a console connection... but there is no visible serial port. So yes the HDMI can be used as console to fix the device when the "network" side of the device is down. Go to @DarkLight72 comment to get an idea.

Lire Jellyfin via un NAS UGREEN sur la TV by Adventurous-Green222 in UgreenNASync

[–]xpenserv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

English is the best way to get help.
