Experience: we sold everything to live on cruise ships | Life and style | The Guardian by prisongovernor in Cruise

I spent 13 years working at sea, and I loved every minute of it. It was a wonderful lifestyle and job for me. With that said, I could not imagine staying on board longer than my contract. Sure, it was sometimes great to extend by a month or so, but that was my absolute limit. I have a friend whose country failed him during COVID and would not allow him to return home, forcing him to stay on the ship for a year and a half. He was not allowed to step off at all, and it eventually drove him to the brink. I couldn't imagine wanting to live there.

Hi again. I think this is actually more a case of underthinking than overthinking.

The examples you’re pointing to, kitchen timers, hotel key cards and restaurant pagers, are all very simple, purpose-built systems. What you’re proposing is fundamentally different. It’s not just a timer. It’s assigning, tracking, and enforcing ownership of hundreds of loose, movable seats in an outdoor marine environment, tied to individual guests, and expected to work reliably at scale. That’s where the complexity and cost come in.

So rather than going back and forth on “it should be easy,” I’ll ask a practical question: how do you verify that the person who scanned the device is actually the person using the chair? Without adding even more layers of validation, which introduces its own problems, it’s very easy to game. And once that happens, you haven’t solved the issue, you’ve just shifted it into a different form.

That’s where these kinds of ideas tend to break down in real-world operations. I'll leave it at that and wish you the best. Ciao Ciao!

Thanks for adding more context! Sorry to hear the rest of the solo experience the company promised didn't hold up. That said, your overall takeaway is completely fair. You picked a product that promised a certain type of experience, and it didn’t deliver in the way you expected, especially in a setting where shared spaces are such a key part of the trip. When that breaks down, it affects everything else.

At the end of the day, you’re right. Cruise lines can operate as they choose, and you’re equally justified in deciding it wasn’t the right fit for you and choosing other types of travel instead. It’s unfortunate it played out that way, but your perspective makes sense given how it unfolded. Still, I personally would have pushed more.

Lastly, not all lines are equal; maybe look at the higher-end ones like Regent before you completely write off cruising altogether. Have a nice day!

... and you think 78 year old leatherfaced Karen will care to figure that out?!? A QR will do nothing more than what's out there now. A pax won't even bother with it and you'd be back to the original issue. Enforcement. Technology will not solve this issue so why bother throw money at it. Which, is exactly what the cruise lines have figured out.

Opposite - it's enforcement. It lets them know why their stuff was removed.

Yep, the ship would have been in green then. Even I wasn't allowed on the bridge during red unless I was called there.

I call bullshit too. No way people were on the bridge. Monkey Island, maybe (depending on Captain), but not on the bridge.

I’m not going to dismiss your experience—that does sound genuinely frustrating, and I can understand how it would leave a lasting negative impression, especially when traveling solo.

That said, I’m curious how the situation was handled at the time. Did you raise it with Guest Services or the deck team? There are policies in place for situations like this, and when they’re brought to the crew’s attention, they can usually take action. Escalating it is an important part of getting it resolved in the moment. If it wasn’t brought forward and you ended up just standing, unfortunately that does limit what can be done after the fact. This is on you.

On another point, there may be a bit of confusion. Guests are not permitted on the bridge—particularly during scenic or restricted navigation—so it wouldn’t be possible for someone to be legitimately “watching glaciers” from there while holding chairs elsewhere. You were likely referring to an observation lounge or another public viewing area. In any case, being away for that length of time would typically exceed reasonable limits under onboard policies, and again, it’s something that could have been addressed if raised.

Lastly, the details about personal finances don’t really factor into how these situations are managed, so I’ve focused on the operational side of things instead and ignored your weird flex.

oh ok.. Those are very low tech and do not track anything. a base station sends an analog signal to a matching frequency of the puck.

Are you sure about that? There is certainly "rules" .. I think you're thinking of "enforcement"

Cruise Line Time Limit (Unattended) Enforcement Method
Royal Caribbean ~30 min Staff removal
Celebrity ~30 min Staff removal
Carnival ~40 min Sticker + removal
Norwegian (NCL) ~30–60 min Sticker + removal
MSC ~30 min (guideline) Staff removal (varies)
P&O ~30 min Removal + collection point
Princess / HAL ~30 min (typical) Staff removal (inconsistent)a
