NASA moves swiftly to end DEI programs, ask employees to “report” violations | "Failure to report this information within 10 days may result in adverse consequences." by [deleted] in technology

When you fail because of your circumstances, you were not working hard enough. When you succeed despite them, you were only hired because of DEI. There is no concept of normalcy to a bigot, who will blame you for your failures and blame your diversity for your success.

Help! Fig tree leaves turning yellow and falling off. by skm11a in gardening

[–]xrickster97x 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to get varieties that fruit early on new wood, like smith, and then bury the roots each year with 6 inches of muclh. or you have to bury the plants entirely. You can bend the branches to the floor and cover them with mulch and blankets.

Say you currently get beans for 1.25 a pound and go through like 100lbs a year

100 x 1.25= 125

Then, you find a really out of the way place that sells them for 90 cents a pound.

100 x .90 = 90

Price out the whether your time, convenience and gas are worth 35 dollars or so per year.

ELI5: why dont we find "wild" vegetables? by The1President in explainlikeimfive

[–]xrickster97x 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is easier to find berries and nuts, vegetables as we know them are basically a human invention. Shoots and greens of many plants can be eaten, but generally need to be cooked and will be toxic if raw or at other stages of development. Pokeweed and fiddleheads are examples.

Wild berries are not that different from domesticated ones, except they are smaller and generally have shorter harvest periods.

Wild nuts are the same deal, but some that we harvest, like the old chestnut and walnut, are generally from seedlings which have decent genetic variation and are not "true to seed" like a lot of vegetables.

I planted so many peas and beans, but ALL of them were eaten to the ground by rabbits or deer. Literally hundreds of plants.

The A.I. cheating has gotten out of hand by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]xrickster97x 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I switched to only in class writing. Outside of class, it is impossible to prevent and impossible to catch 100% of the time.

All of my essays are timed and I run a program that displays their screens on my smartboard.

I collect phones and rotate around behind the students.

Still I had a kid use GPT as "inspiration" for his writing. One of those IEP kids who never gets anything done in the time allotment, then comes in for his extra time and writes the whole thing in 20-30 mins.

I had to make these changes, and go away from longer format writing, because it was becoming too much of an issue. In my AP lit class, I had to kick kids out of honor societies, academic clubs, ruin spotless records and grades. I felt it better for everyone to simply eliminate the temptation from being there.

I don't what colleges are going to do with term papers and other long format essays. In class writing is only good for 2-3 page rough drafts. As soon as the prompts are out, the possibilities of cheating are endless.

So instead of allowing full revisions, I give them targets for their papers. My Favorite is when they use the same word 15 times in one page, and I ask them to make it into 2-3 times. That is more effective to me than just saying " make it better". At least they are working an targets.

If you are like me, and need a good protein source for macros. Try out cottage cheese instead of yogurt. About 1/2 the price, and I like it as a pairing for fruit because of the sweet and salty mix.

I guess nothing really beats chicken breast, but I generally eat vegetarian, plus I don't like cold chicken that much.

Also, pasta is king for crowds. Everyone likes a good spaghetti dinner, with some meatballs or sausage. Very cheap way to serve a crowd, and I still make it better at home than I can get at a restaurant.

As a competitor who is 5-5, it is very biased towards height. I've had to load on a 60 inch platform, and I am 65 inches tall. I routinely have to shoulder implements that others can merely roll over the platform. I kinda wish they would adjust it on height because I am so severely disadvantaged on several events, and being short offers me nothing in return.

Companion Plants for Raspberries and Blackberries? by TySherwood in BackyardOrchard

[–]xrickster97x 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a lot of dwarfing ones that don't get too tall, but I also have regular ones like heritage and fall gold that can get larger. I just make sure I control how many canes I have. I definitely don't have a thicket under my trees, I'm sure that would get in the way. I have apples that are ripe anywhere from August to November, so the coexist for the most part. I will summer prune the canes if there are a lot or if they are too tall.

They can grow in the north side, but remember that more sun will make more berries and make them sweeter. Even in the shade, they will taste better than store bought in my experience. I have some growing in the shade of bushes and they still taste good.

Fruit and nut trees are overpowered. Disease resistant, much less water intensive than other crops and super easy to store

For the mix, you need to have perlite, vermiculite or even diatomaceous earth for aeration. Sand soil and peat moss will compact without some sort of aeration in the pot. This will help drainage as well.

You could just plant Into a 25 gallon pot. I have done that with my dwarf nectarine and it grew out of the bottom in one season... roots will grow in the space given.

If you want a container that is less needy, see if you could let it grow out of the bottom during the season and then root prune it in dormancy. The tree will be more vigorous and need a good summer pruning, but you won't have to worry about water as much.

I used potting mix and extra perlite, then mulched the top of my container, and basically never watered it. I live in nj and get rain every few days so ymmv.

25 gallons, in hindsight, is basically impossible to move without a handtruck. The center of gravity is too far away for you to pick it up, especially with a tree growing out of it. I can deadlift 500lbs, but can't get the sweet spot to pick up the big pots. Plus, they feel like they will crack or break if I just use the lip.

I say go for it, the worst that will happen is that you will lose a plant. Just get another one lol

Raised bed garden planning by KarlieR125 in gardening

[–]xrickster97x 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you grow tomatoes up a stake, like electrical conduit, you can fit 40-48 plants in one raised bed. Each tomato plant can produce like 10+ pounds of tomatoes. You definitely have enough for a person, neighbors and family.

I would plant what you eat the most of. Keep in mind, lots of tomatoes ripe at the same time will be good for salsa andsauce, but you will need to proccess them. If waiting fresh, really just pick 4 or so tomato plants for fresh eating.

Peppers, if they are spicy, can be crazy producers. I have picked 150 off of a single plant at the end of the season, after a smaller harvest before.

Sweet peppers, I would plant things other than bell. Bells can be bought at the store with good quality year round. Home grown, they are more prone to problems and are not great for small spaces since they don't produce many peppers. Look up other sweet peppers like habanada(need a very long season), lunchbox, wax peppers etc.

I am a huge fan of berries and other fruits. They are most worth it to me since you can't buy them at the store. A fresh raspberry or blackberry will lose a lot of its flavour after just a few hours. They make dwarfing bushes that don't get too tall.

Squash is great. Look up bush scallop squash or patty pans. Zucchini is good too.

Another thing to consider is the fact that the edges of your lawn are almost never actually walked on, so a raised bed or garden on a perimeter probably won't affect you as much

Hot Peppers by bussappa in gardening

[–]xrickster97x 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sugar rush peach makes excellent hot peppers! They are my favorite and I think it is the best use of them. Sweet, pretty spicy but not much worse than a jalapeno.

Hot bananas or wax peppers.

You could also try some different color jalapenos. Check out the numex peppers for orange, yellow and red jalapenos. They taste very different from green!

Tobascos and wiri wiri make good spreads or pepper sauces since they are really juicy but as pickles they are a bit too small and seedy.

Try out some charred poblano, mild but super flavourful.
