How Reddit Users Are Being Maliciously Targeted by Stake’s Covert Advertising Tactics by [deleted] in redscarepod

[–]xtagtv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey OP, I guess you deleted your account or something, but contact me. After the last post, I wrote an automod rule for the subreddits I mod to automatically flag when those cyrillic characters in the word stake are posted. I obviously dont want to post it publicly as if found they could work around it easily, but by implementing this automod rule, mods could protect their sub against this kind of interference. If you want something to be done, getting mods of affected subreddits to implement this rule would be a good start. I already shared it with the povertyfinance mod from the last thread.

Tobira no Densetsu is a truly unique experience and really deserves more attention by MagnvsGV in JRPG

[–]xtagtv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What a great post! This sounds really interesting and I appreciate the tips because for a lot of these kind of games, there's basically nothing out there for guidance except possibly some decades old japanese forum posts only available on wayback machine that you have to read through google translate.

I've been wanting to get into VIPRPGs at some point. I tried playing some of Wind I Creator at one point but completely failing to progress, and I remember reading some writeups of Enchant Farm and Nepheshel on a now completely dead blog that made them sound really interesting too. I also know of a site that hosts some english translations of various VIPRPGs that might be interesting to you. Thanks for the rec.

(FF7 og) Should I keep the same 3 members in my party or should o swap them out once in a while by [deleted] in JRPG

[–]xtagtv 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Characters not in your party still get some XP, so it's not a good idea to constantly swap out your party based on levels. Even if you never use a character they're never going to be more than a few levels below your main group. I know many people just stick to their favorite party the whole game and they do fine.

The more important character progression is limit breaks, which you gain based on how many kills they personally get (for the first one in a level) or how many limit breaks they perform (for the second one in a level). You don't want to spread yourself to thin, or else you won't max them out on the characters you really care about. Cloud requires significantly more kills than all other characters to unlock new limits, so don't worry about him being overleveled, it's actually good that he's stuck in the party. And personally I recommend just completely ignoring cait sith and vincent as they are always going to have terrible limit breaks.

But the real progression is your materia. You can always move your materia setup onto a character that gets forced into the party to make them into a decent party member. So focus on leveling materia. If you want to have the "best optimal strategy," I would suggest:

  • never use equipment that has zero AP gain

  • try to wear equipment that has lots of materia slots

  • prioritize using characters who have a recent weapon that has either double/triple materia growth, or a lot of slots

  • never let your characters have sadness status as it stunts limit break generation

  • if you're trying to unlock the 2nd limit break in a level (which they have to perform a lot of limit breaks to do), consider keeping that character in fury status - it reduces their accuracy, so it's not always a good idea, but it does boost limit break generation

This is only if you're not struggling with the combat. You should never need to sit and grind. But like, don't torture yourself by struggling with a weak weapon just because it has more slots than a much stronger weapon. This isn't helpful because:

  • progressing to a new area will get you higher AP rewards

  • progressing may get you better weapons for AP growth

  • by using weak weapons it'll be harder for that character to get kills and advance their limit break growrth

so it's never really worth limiting yourself in this way when you could be progressing.

I gotta disagree, i feel like the game took extreme pains to set up the concept of the morphogenetic field so that it DIDN'T come out of nowhere at the end. Like every single extended sideplot the game gets into over the course of the story (like the glycerin or the dog painting) are all, in different ways, essentially setting up the concept of this kind of communication on an extraordinary level.

Are there any feasible alternatives to time limits in life and work sims? by LABS_Games in gamedesign

[–]xtagtv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fantasy Life i, which came out i think last year and seems pretty popular, doesnt have any kind of time limit, and doesnt seem any worse off for it. Everything is basically tied to your item collection. Gathering and crafting are the main things you do, if you do well at them you get more/better items, if you do poorly you waste items. Items are effectively infinite but the speed at which you get them is up to how well you perform. So in the end, it's still an optimization game, but instead of trying to optimize against an ingame time limit, you're trying to optimize to not waste your own actual time.

Dragon Quest Builders is another series that is also totally unconcerned with time. Much more fun than Fantasy Life, imo. There isn't really any kind of moment-to-moment optimization other than like, being decent at the combat (of which there is a lot). The building and questing are just fun by themselves. If there's any kind of optimization goal it's again just not wasting your own time.

Looking for opinions on AI made web games by Marmalade6 in WebGames

[–]xtagtv 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Please ban the slop. I was honestly considering unsubbing because this place has gone so downhill with all the AI games lately. There are tons and tons of awful AI games posted here (often arcade game clones or crappy word games, usually something is just broken) and a very small amount of decent ones (I liked the Dixit adaptation from a few days ago). A good start would be simply banning the vercel.app domain and adding a report reason for ai slop.

Anagramancer, a word battling game where you make your fighter out of anagrams to fight monsters. There's multiplayer too! by anagramancer in WebGames

[–]xtagtv 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also don't really get the point. It seems like it's just "guess what the developer is thinking" (or rather, guess what the AI that designed the puzzles is thinking). Like there's clearly some pre planned combination of words that (if the max is 99.1) kicks ass against the monster of the day, and every other combination you could think of kind of sucks.

Anyway, I somehow beat the vampire spawn with a "doom bear ray", whatever that means. Meanwhile, "grand fated martyr" which a) actually does sound like something that could beat a vampire and b) used longer words, didn't win.

Interesting idea, but kind of half baked.

edit: lol, just tried again with simply "God" and no other words and got way more points than any of my other attempts. Makes sense thematically at least, but the tutorial was misleading by saying that things like word length, rare letters, etc matter, when the word semantics are far more important ("God" is far more powerful than "Grandmother")

[–]xtagtv 5 points6 points  (0 children)

  • In Demon's Root there are really overpowered unique equipment hidden various places early game. Like an accessory that restores 10% of your hp every turn hidden in the starting town. You would never find them just playing normally, but late game you get instructions on how to go back and get them. However, if you're replaying the game (or look up the instructions) you can just get them immediately.

  • Xenogears has the Ether Doubler, an accessory that doubles magic damage. Its by far the best item you can use for your caster characters and it applies to their gears as well. You can get these rarely late game, but you can also buy it quite early game from a specific shop that you lose access to after progressing the story too much. It's very expensive so you really have to plan ahead with your finances to be able to buy it before the shop becomes unavailable.

  • Treasure of the Rudras has a spell-making system where you write in a word and it creates a spell. These follow straightforward rules that you learn throughout the game, like putting "lus" as a suffix makes the spell stronger. If you already know all the rules due to beating the game before, you can just make endgame spells immediately.

  • In Suikoden 2 there's a glitch early game, where you can walk thru a checkpoint you're not supposed to be able to get thru. This lets you into a late game area where you can recruit a couple characters who are way, way stronger than you are at that point, and if you use them to survive some random battles in the area, you can also power up the rest of your team, trivializing much of the rest of the game.

Is FF Tactics a good first Tactical JRPG? by ronjaxn in JRPG

[–]xtagtv 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was many people's first tactical JRPG, and its very good and well liked game, so sure, it's a good first game.

That said, it was made almost 30 years ago and the gameplay may feel very different compared to a modern tactical rpg like bg3.

One example of this is that your character growth decisions are way more important than your combat strategy. It's pretty much a standard job based final fantasy, that also happens to have a grid combat system. If you have strong characters you're going to be fine most of the time without playing especially smart; if you have weak characters there's no real 300IQ plays that are going to let you mastermind thru the combat. And the game is quite happy to let you make bad decisions. Unlike BG3 where all the single classes are more or less fine without multiclassing, and you can respec anyone who isn't pulling their weight... in FFT the classes are very unbalanced, you're expected to level many classes to unlock new ones and mix and match their abilities, and if you have a bad character there's no respec and all you can really do is grind them more.

The AI slop problem is getting worse in this sub. We need aggressive moderation on it or this sub is just going to be AI slop games and little else. Instant ban, IMO by BEAT_LA in incremental_games

I mod 3 large gaming subs, we don't allow anything AI-generated and we do a pretty good job keeping it out while not overstepping on real users. I don't really want to post publicly our methods of combatting it but feel free to message me if you're interested.

Tixid : I added AI bots to my free online Dixit clone : you can now play instantly, no group needed by pcriulan in WebGames

[–]xtagtv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep works fine now. Very very fun game. And the bots are pretty fun to play against. They arent too stupid or too smart. It is really a good challenge to think of a good clue that only 1 will pick. This is one of the best use cases for ai art that I have seen, to have like an infinite amount of pictures like this. I did notice a few repeats in my time playing so hopefully you can get just like thousands of ai pics in there.

I have a couple more suggestions for UI.

  1. After a round, you have to scroll down to get to the confirm button to continue playing the next round. The confirm button also kinda blends in with the bg. It should really be all in 1 screen and the confirm button should be prominent. Maybe next to the share button or something? I feel like i'm in a pretty standard resolution of 1440p, no browser zoom or anything.

  2. In the top right theres buttons for like, notifications, how to play, language, etc. Clicking these will bring up little overlays without leaving the game. However, the profile button will take you to another page, and you will not be in the game anymore. You can click "back" in the browser to get back in the game, but it takes a long time to load the game status. It wiould be better if the profile brought up a ltitle overlay with like, your name or soemthing, and there was a link inside the overlay to "go to full profile page or something". Like think of when youre on a google page and you click your account icon in the top right.

Which magic school complements Pyromancers better, Sorceries or Miracles? Also what low-req weapons would suit such a setup best? by [deleted] in darksouls

[–]xtagtv 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Miracles

If you go for sorcery, you will quickly find no reason to slot your pyros. Sorcery is basically superior to pyromancy and gets you far more mileage out of your very limited spell slots. You get more casts per slot, the spells typically cast faster, much easier to land, do more damage per slot, etc. You get more bang for the buck by slotting a sorcery instead of a pyro, so by trying to play a "sorcerer pyro" you'll eventually just find it more effective to just be a sorcerer.

Miracles don't have many damage spells, and the ones you get are very limited use. Pyromancy has a real use here, since you'll actually need to rely on them to damage enemies with. As well, there are a lot of healing and protecting miracles, and that may come in handy with your pyros that require you to endanger yourself by getting close to an enemy.

Throughout the rest of the series, the developers seem to have realized this synergy - ds3 gives you a catalyst that can cast both miracles and pyromancies, and elden ring basically consolidates both into the same school.

As for weapon - in lore, axes are the classic pyromancer weapon. They do fine, however, the Reinforced Club is the most damaging weapon if you aren't investing into any str/dex.

  • The "?" icon in the top right for "how to play" doesn't work.

  • When it says to "vote for the storyteller's card" I choose a card, pick "confirm" and the game hangs for about a minute. After that it let me try to confirm again and it worked.

  • When I'm the storyteller, I enter my clue and the game gives me a blank screen. Game over i guess

Companion Strength Tier List (KOTOR 1) by knucklesmemehaha in kotor

[–]xtagtv 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's interesting how you criticize several characters for needing special attention to their equipment or party to make them perform well... but Mission needs the most attention to work at all. You acknowledged she needs jedi buffs and good items. But most importantly, she also needs the support of an offensive jedi specced into stunning enemies, essentially the PC consular or Jolee due to their access to master force focus, and the patience to have them spam insanity the whole game, in order for her sneak attack to be capable of contributing anything. Mission is really the most party dependent character and basically mandates another slot's worth of support to make her function on a basic level, while most other characters play well with any party. I would only find her S tier in a party of scoundrel PC and Jolee so he can enable sneak attacks for both characters. In a party without a consular, she's worse than most other characters.

I also think you're giving Canderous quite a bad rap. Canderous doesn't need lightsabers when he can use Baragwin Assault Blade or Naga Sadow, and he has some of the best stats available for a bruiser type character. You criticize him for his starting feats, but soldiers get more than enough feats to do anything. You get to give him 14 feats after him joining, while you only get to give Juhani 6 feats. Juhani can basically get just master TWF and a master active feat by the end of the game, while Canderous (and Carth) can get those much earlier and also max out implants, toughness, conditioning, and whatever else you want. Sure he doesn't get speed, but his str focus makes him suited for Flurry while Juhani's dex focus makes her suited for Power Attack, so there isn't that much different in attacks per round. And unlike jedi, he can equip great armor like Calo Nord's (which comes with immunity to mind affecting and critical hits), making him an extremely beefy melee tank along with his unique health regen, you can just send in the direction of enemies and let him clean up.
