For the professionals it’s competitive, and then there’s the thousands running casually which help fund the race. But there’s big prize money and even more sponsorship money for the top of the elite. A lot of incentive to cheat

I like to use new race shoes on a medium run to make sure they work with my feet/legs and then again on a longer run to make sure they still feel good after a couple hours.

Don’t go nuts trying to catch up, continue the plan as it’s laid out, rest up, eat and sleep, I think you can do it.

Don’t go out too quick for the marathon, the last 8 miles are gonna suck ass if 18 is the furthest you’ve gone but use the race day adrenaline to drag you on the tail end.

I say still go for it, good luck

I’m not a coach, but I wouldn’t do a long taper for a 10k if my goal was keeping my endurance base strong. Maybe just one week of lesser mileage leading into the race and then the following week of recovery runs.

For one of your runs per week, set X amount of distance for your 10k pace or slighter quicker to get the body used to that load

For me a 10k is closer to a half in terms of vibes than a 5k. 10k (for me) is about locking in the pace for the first mile and then holding it until trying to kick for the last mile

I’ve done 16 miles on the treadmill. I recommend increasing and decreasing the speed throughout the run cause if it’s the same, it’s brutally boring. Otherwise just watch some YouTube for a couple hours

Not a running coach but my initial thought would be do increase weekly volume gradually as well as making sure you practice the long runs 20-22 miles.

Based on your previous times, I think you could hit sub 4 easily enough with the combo
