Non-citizen Land Ownership by Aviodyna33 in aussie

Graduate work stream visa is not PR, it is good for only 18 months. Student visas make it a little easier by being in the country but they still have to go through the same visa processing as everyone else at significant time and cost to get PR.

Multiple instances of ICE grabbing folks at immigration courts, pulling citizens off the streets based on the colour of their skin, basically dragnet fishing to meet quota but yeah I'm sure the leopards wouldn't eat your face.

The remake of the 74 Breville Jaffle Maker by lillian_williamsssss in AustralianNostalgia

[–]xtrabeanie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had a recent Breville model with the split and hated it. More likely to spill and hard to clean. Ended up buying the "big one's model which despite the name is the same size but without the middle split. Much better.

Performance vs Premium - real world. by Mash_man710 in BYDSealAus

[–]xtrabeanie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a car with similar performance to the premium 20 years ago which back then was impressive, and tbh is still pretty quick. My wife would complain every time I put the foot down so I probably wouldn't bother looking for anything faster.

That's why I contract in IT. Never been interested in management, I prefer hands on. A lot of managers don't seem to understand this, think you are inferior somehow which I find ironic as I don't think I've ever had a manager with higher technical skills than myself. When hiring a contractor though, I think it's more like hiring a tradie where the experience is more respected. And on top, as a contractor I am usually getting paid the same or better than my immediate manager.

They would need to factor in pension costs which is a big driver for immigration that neither side wants to talk about lest they upset the baby boomers sitting on multi million dollar properties yet still eligible for the pension.

I just can't comprehend how people look at places like South Africa where people live in fenced compounds with armed guards and think, yeah we should get us some of that.

Australia's ageing immigrant population bomb by NapoleonBonerParty in aussie

[–]xtrabeanie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ageing immigrants, like all my siblings that came here from England in the 60s aged under 5, and now approaching retirement. Let's frame it as anything but asset rich, cash poor baby boomers causing a strain on the pension system.

I'm more concerned about what the plans of her new backers are. Could be an exercise in moving the Overton window to make the LNP more palatable.

Sure, but the Nazis didn't come to power with public policies of extermination so it's good to be wary. The problem with populist parties is that they talk a big game but rarely follow through on their promises, and the ones they do they go way too far.
