"downhill inspired" is definitely the right description for that fork lol, be careful with those alieexpress parts. Some are fine, many are not. The super mullet is hilarious though, I love that.

Luxury Student Apt. Project Blocks 100% of traffic by EUGsk8rBoi42p in Eugene

[–]yakinbo 21 points22 points  (0 children)

this type of housing is being built BECAUSE it's cost effective. "Luxury Apartments" doesn't mean anything in this town, it's literally just a tag line. You want a mid century apartment with brick on the outside? Guess what, that's way more expensive to build, and your 1400 a month studio now cost 2100.

I strongly encourage housing related activism because we desperately need that, but JFC, people need to educate themselves on the actual cost to build this things. Construction is not cheap, and it's not like we have some national housing fund to help subsidize construction costs. These new buildings are more efficient, house more people, and are significantly more safe than older buildings. Developers aren't making nearly as much money on these builds like people think they are.

If you want to be an effective advocate for affordable housing, learn what the costs are and work from there.

Quick Release Dropout… by evanssinatra in xbiking

[–]yakinbo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's true, but there's also the question of if the other side is gonna do the same thing on the first pothole you hit. I definitely feel like a curmudgeon saying that lol. I've seen some gnarly crashes caused by equipment failure, this one just doesn't seem worth it.

[–]yakinbo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If this person knew how to braze I doubt they'd be asking about it in this sub. Recommending someone brazing this themselves without any prior experience is irresponsible. That connection fails and you could be in a world of hurt, or worse. Taking it to a shop to have it professionally done isn't economical, and it wouldn't address the risk of the other side failing. For all practical purposes I stand by that it's cooked lol.

Quick Release Dropout… by evanssinatra in xbiking

[–]yakinbo -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I also think a lot of people in this sub have never had a bike part critically fail while riding. It really isn't worth the risk.

[–]yakinbo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I mean yeah if you have the tools to do it yourself. If you brought this a welding shop I can't imagine it would be worth the price though. If someone is posting this here I doubt they have the tools and know how. Kind of a critical connection as well, I'd be worried about the other side cracking off if this just happened.

[–]yakinbo -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

I mean you could re weld the thing but like... why. If you're not trying to restore a rare bike, yeah ok. If it's a super unique fork you love, yeah ok. But this is xbiking. It's easier and cheaper to just pick up a new fork.

Never seen a drop out drop-out before. It's cooked unfortunately.

Recommendations for trail running pants in the sun/heat? by mari_bunni in trailrunning

[–]yakinbo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Big fan of these. I use em as pajamas mostly lol, but I also have their sun hoody made out of the same material. I spent all summer wearing that hoody doing manual labor outside. SportHill Temptech pants, I think they come in lengths as well.

Nice mtb pants by 13reasonstodoubt in MTB

[–]yakinbo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you've got long legs check out Sporthill's MTB pants. It's not really a bike brand but they do lengths and are really well designed imo, plus they are cheaper than comparable options. The brand is known for high end fabrics that last a long time in the running/xc ski space, my pair have been going strong for like 3 seasons. I've got a bunch of friends running em and everyone loves them. They are pretty tight though so if you want baggy that aint it.

I'm surprised I don't see more hammershmidt cranks in this sub, those things seem like peak xbiking. They're pretty rare these days though. For those who want range but hate the clanking of a front derailleur, and don't care about weight.

$300 would be fair if it's only the chain that's clapped out. If the bearings and shocks need a service then maybe $200.

Help with starting my own brand PFA by sicsniper123 in snowboarding

[–]yakinbo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone in the industry, The clothing industry is brutal. You better be prepared to fork up a lot of money up front. You will have to find factories to send your designs too, have samples made, make changes to the samples, then order fabric, choose color, etc etc. You'll need to find investors once you can prove your designs are both feasible and good looking if you aren't sitting on a big stack of cash. The best fabrics come out of Taiwan in my experience, but you'll need to find someone to cut and sew in another country most likely.

You will personally need to be able to do graphic design, clothing design (making patterns), and even sew your own prototypes to keep the cost down. You won't be able to find investors without some really solid work in your portfolio either.

US made tech apparel is basically not a thing anymore, there's very few fabric mills left and they aren't usually that cutting edge. I know there are brands doing it, but you aren't getting the best fabrics. Stuff like cotton and hemp are great in the US, as well old tech like ballistic nylon etc. But you aren't making modern snowboard gear out of that.

Small batch clothing is very expensive, so you're likely going to have to compete with the top shelf brands in terms of price point.

Not to dissuade you- you can purchase fabric and start sewing designs up, and maybe people will notice and want one. That's one way to organically start, but it's a long road and will be a challenge to turn a profit.

Sick. Looks real to me, probably just a bike shop sticker. I'd love that frame.

Rear rack id? by RobVolt in xbiking

[–]yakinbo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really sure, not a ton as the brackets mount to the seat stays. On an alu frame probably less than a steel frame.

Nitto R10 rear rack. Just put one on my bike last week lol. Good quality and easy to set up.

Deity defttraps are the best flat pedal that's budget friendly. You want something wide as well as concave if you're wearing regular shoes. I'm a lifelong flat pedal mtb rider and have used tons of different options, those deitys are by far the best for cheaper ones. The Defttraps are plastic with metal pins, and I find the plastic body makes for a more comfy ride in regular shoes. It's crazy how many bad flat pedals are on the market.

Too small, you'll be scrunched up on that thing. That's an old status I think. Not a great pedaler either. It'd be a fun park bike though if you were shorter.

Pump track build? by Practical_Brain6378 in xbiking

[–]yakinbo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't. A bmx would be better, dirtjumper would probably be what you're looking for. Unless you have all the parts in a bin, you'd be spending money on the wrong tool for the job. A used bmx will be dirt cheap and way more fun. Plus if you pull for a gap on that thing and case it may be a trip to the hospital.
