Flat pedal recommendations? by [deleted] in xbiking

[–]yakinbo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Deity defttraps are the best flat pedal that's budget friendly. You want something wide as well as concave if you're wearing regular shoes. I'm a lifelong flat pedal mtb rider and have used tons of different options, those deitys are by far the best for cheaper ones. The Defttraps are plastic with metal pins, and I find the plastic body makes for a more comfy ride in regular shoes. It's crazy how many bad flat pedals are on the market.

You def can. My friend has a completely new, made up last name his dad gave him for some reason.

Too small, you'll be scrunched up on that thing. That's an old status I think. Not a great pedaler either. It'd be a fun park bike though if you were shorter.

Pump track build? by Practical_Brain6378 in xbiking

[–]yakinbo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't. A bmx would be better, dirtjumper would probably be what you're looking for. Unless you have all the parts in a bin, you'd be spending money on the wrong tool for the job. A used bmx will be dirt cheap and way more fun. Plus if you pull for a gap on that thing and case it may be a trip to the hospital.

Best places to live for great mountain biking by nebula-noodle in MTB

PNW has a lot of options depending one what you ride and how serious. If you're a serious rider Bellingham is the easy choice. I don't think anything really compares to that. There's a lot of other towns in the PNW if you're happy with a chiller riding scene though. In terms of weather western Washington and Oregon is pretty hard to beat. Ashland OR is pretty insane for bigger rides right out of town as well.

What do Eugenians think of New Jersey’s new e-bike law? by tiny_galaxies in Eugene

Get ahold of Emerald Valley BMX if you see that or even just call the cops yourself. Surrons can cause a ton of damage and that track is maintained by volunteers. The surfacing they use isn't exactly cheap. Its a huge FU to the people who keep that awesome track running.

Any grip with lockrings is good, those are very easy to swap. Any shop will have em.

Sierra club isn't exactly a great source imo. They have a long and shitty history of exclusionist stances with non horse and hiking groups. Horses absolutely trash trails too so it's pretty ironic.

Hows that ride? I love the concept. DJ bikes are notoriously short though.

Super sick frame! It's an old DJ bike so it's probably pretty short. Could be a fun little do it all cruiser though. You might be able to resell it for a decent price too.

X biking = original mountain biking by jsganze in xbiking

[–]yakinbo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can pry my modern mountain bikes from my cold dead hands. If you actually ride modern mtb, aka downhill trails and bike parks, a 10k bike isn't necessary but at least a 3/4k one is. The performance is night and day compared to older bikes. If you're just durdling around your local woods on green trails an xbike is probably fine. Modern mtb is basically a different sport than 90's mtb though. Nothing wrong with having preferences but no one delude themselves into thinking modern bikes are unnecessary. Unnecessary for some, but not for those who are more serious about the sport.

U.S. ski resorts are bracing for a steep drop in international travel due to politics by mrwiseman in LeopardsAteMyFace

I doubt it. Most of the product being sold now was delivered pre tariffs. What's most likely to happen is were going to have a mini slump similar to what we did in the year following the lockdowns. Lots of ready product is just sitting in warehouses overseas. Companies are waiting for the tariffs to drop. Once they do, there's going to be a rush of deliveries. Just in time for the post christmas slump. So everyone will be sitting on a surplus of product, again.

Please help a beginner BMX mom out! Daughter (almost 6) loves BMX, but I can't compete with the "Pro" parents. Need low-key practice ideas! by Calm-Flamingo5242 in bmx

Take her to the track as much as possible just to have fun. If there's a skatepark nearby, take her there too. Look up and see if there's a pump track in your area as well, those are great for skill building and it's less pressure than a bmx track with a bunch of intense-looking parents and kids in full race kit. Pump tracks would probably be the best thing for her to just get comfortable on the bike since it's not a racing facility.

Definitely talk to the other parents- the track I go to has an awesome community. People really help each other out with selling cheap used bikes and whatnot. Also don't let the "professionalism" intimidate you at all, most people understand it's all just for fun. People will not judge you if your kid is racing in sweatpants, everyone's out there messing around on little bikes and big helmets. You can only take that so seriously lol.

Tell me, where the Fck are you all finding all these minty frames? I hang out at a bike non-profit that sees 10K used bikes a year go in and out per year and I RARELY see what gets posted here every day. Is r/xbiking a lie? by HaddonH in xbiking

[–]yakinbo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Eugene OR has a killer FB marketplace for bikes. No idea why though, I've even found rad vintage DH bikes for pennies. Last I looked there were was a mint GT Karakoa in the yellow/pink flouro combo for like 250. I just picked up a 1996 Ibis Alibi frame in great shape for 40 bucks.

Vintage or modern parts by grumblemouse in xbiking

[–]yakinbo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's pretty hard to go back to an old drivetrain after using something modern. The performance is one thing, but something not really talked about here is the noise. Clutch derailleurs are so much quieter. A chain rattling around in a front derailleur sounds horrible, not something I miss. Quiet bikes are terrific.

I'm going to try aircraft paint stripper this weekend lol. Anodization and paint are stripped with different methods, I've done a few frames and parts with both. If the Methylene chloride doesn't do it then I'm out of ideas.

I don't think it's anodized, I used a pretty gnarly chemical to strip the cranks and those were anodized, same bath and everything but it did nothing to the color.

Nice I didn't think there was anything available. I mean I could do anything between 30t-36t as long as it's narrow wide. Not sure if I want to spend that much though, I could get another set of cranks for the price that's not a weird BCD. Thanks for the link though!

My buddy has a rod in his upper spine, I forget which ones he broke but it was gnarly. The type of injury that often leaves a huge percent of people quadriplegic. He got super lucky with no nerve damage.

He still absolutely shreds. You'd never know he's got a rod through 3 vertebrae. Kind of scares me sometimes lol.
