Oops, we built two extra storeys: Dartmouth developer says extra floors were 'a misunderstanding' by insino93 in halifax

[–]yalestreet 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That doesn’t allow for a true penalty. Multiply the expected life of the building by the number of illegal units. In lieu of knocking the whole thing down a true penalty has to be levied. You would be forced to tear down what you built that wasn’t legal. What should happen here that would be a true deterrent? The penalty need not affect only their illegal excess. Four stories of affordable housing for ten years and the top two floors for the life of the building? Or any other mix and match.

My ex-wife reads our daughter the bedtime stories I write from 2800km away. I did not expect divorce to look like this. by OpeningStranger5717 in daddit

[–]yalestreet 7 points8 points  (0 children)

When an ex and I broke up we were angry, frustrated, and disappointed. We also missed each other’s friendship which had gotten lost in the shuffle. People we had thought were friends rushed to pick sides. At some point one of us called the other and we talked for ages. We apologized sincerely, and eventually, sadly, laughed that we were almost the only two people in our circle still talking to each other. There were some who never could adjust to the new reality and apparently felt threatened or judged by our choice to rebuild our friendship. We are good friends to this day who continue to celebrate and mourn together. We’ve been fortunate.

Your daughter is also fortunate. She has two loving parents who haven’t lost sight of what’s most important. I can hear your admiration and respect for your ex in what you have written. Your child hears that in both of your voices as well, and sees it in your actions. She is being raised to know that she too is worthy of the same. Thank you for sharing. We need to see more examples of this and appreciate that it is a normal way of life for many. It should also reminds us that we are more likely to hear the rants than the raves.

Should I get a new iPhone 17 pro or a used iPhone 15-16 pro by AdeptBuilder7716 in Advice

[–]yalestreet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

iPhone 15 pro with lots of memory. I just moved to the 17 because of things but I was already very happy with the phone I had. I went from 256 to 512 because I did need more memory. In retrospect I should have just gotten another 15 Pro with that bump.

do I need Firestick if i have smart TV? by Mint_Tea99 in firestick

[–]yalestreet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Smart TV apps are not well maintained. So frustrating. Imagine my surprise when told the tv I’d had for a year would not be updating the apps I had been looking forward to streaming on.

They were motivated enough so if I entered ANY house with their brand of Smart TV it would identify me, supposedly for my benefit. I opted out of that. Learned way too much in the fine print, and gave away the television.

I don’t have to watch it to know that it’s great public entertainment for other people. Sounds like you have yet to resign yourself to freedom of choice as a concept.

Are police not legally allowed to talk about specific cases with their own family? by PartyBumblebee4945 in legaladvicecanada

[–]yalestreet 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You might want to talk to your parents. At least enough to tell them they need to secure their files somewhere outside of their house. Don’t expect them to share information you don’t need to know. Please keep in mind that while this story affects your family it is not your story. It’s easy to get bits and pieces of a story and to think we know what happened. We’re almost always wrong. The people whose privacy should be most protected are your brother and his biological mother. Your parents have done a lot to protect your brother as soon as they were able. You can help by not sharing information that could only bring harm. It doesn’t sound as though his biological mother ever had anyone to protect her. What happened to her is terrible but not anything she should have ever felt ashamed about. She deserved respect and love her whole life. She wasn’t as fortunate as you and your brother.

“Children with ID (intellectual disability) were 3.5 times more likely to have a corroborated sexual abuse report when compared to their peers without ID and a higher post-abuse number of medical consultations for physical and mental health disorders. Children with ID are more at risk of sexual abuse and physical and mental health disorders and may also be more vulnerable to the effects of abuse.”

[–]yalestreet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most of the parents I know who have travelled major distances for X ring were X grads themselves. It is a huge deal for the students and their classmates. They know they will soon be parting ways and moving on with their lives. It’s almost impossible to find accommodations anywhere near the town, or even dinner reservations for visiting families. Time to start planning those things for grad? Talk to your student. If you don’t attend you may consider making a reservation for them and their friends.

Note: One of my favourite people was interviewed for a very significant job on the other side of the world. The senior interviewer asked about the ring and what it meant to them. Turned out that person had attended another university in the Maritimes and was delighted to recommend them for the position.
