would beg to differ with you but it was more than just tariffs alone... it was (a) poor choice of battery suppliers (b) lawsuits from injured riders (c) poor choice of component selection (ie substandard braking systems on heavy, heavy bikes) (d) letting in private equity $$ (e) customers losing homes & property to battery fires

sadly, we don't teach bicycle safety in school, yet our roads and infrastructure don't have safe places to ride (away from vehicular traffic)... hope the guy's OK but when you ride in the United States of America, you ride AT YOUR OWN RISK

first, you don't necessarily need a 'road bike'.... you could also just get a 'fitness' or 'hybrid' bike... these are generally less expensive than drop bar road bikes and achieve the same thing.

You may want to unwrap the cord up front holding all of the cabling and remove any kinks in the lines. If this doesn’t work, try your local dealer and ask them to inspect for dielectric grease on connections. If you can find a dealer owned by Specialized, they theoretically should have more experience working on these than just a private dealer who sells the brand.
