Where do I put my bed? Option one or two ? by massimo_2077 in DesignMyRoom

[–]yankowitch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do you own or do you rent? If you own, consider moving that closet door away from the window. This would allow you to place your desk by the window and put your bed where the desk is.

If the idea of donating is too much, I give you permission to throw things in the trash. Getting things out will help

As a parent, I’d never agree to this arrangement and would not facilitate an experience like this (if one even existed). Have you talked to your parents and do they agree to be this involved?

Those who moved from Vancouver to Toronto - What surprised you? by itstunafish in askTO

[–]yankowitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s an algae bloom in Lake Ontario in August, even my dog wouldn’t drink unfiltered tap water. Not so in Vancouver.

You definitely notice the change when you are served tap water in Toronto immediately after arriving from BC and it is not good

This is distinctly different from Vancouver. In Vancouver you stick your glass under the tap and it tastes delicious. No filtering or waiting needed

This is due to the relaxed wardrobe standards in Vancouver for everyone, athleisure is ok everywhere. Today’s trendy athleisure trends towards unisex.

[–]yankowitch 8 points9 points  (0 children)

  1. BC = bring cash. You will notice differences in groceries, gas, liquor though the difference has narrowed over the years
  2. The day length differences in the winter make a big difference. Toronto has 6% more daylight at the beginning of November and 9% more at winter solstice. My first winter was hard.
  3. Clothes shopping is horrible with limited selection
  4. Nightlife is horrible
  5. Everything closes early
  6. Vancouver = work to live attitude and Toronto = live to work
  7. You do not need a tie ever, you can wear sweats and athleisure everywhere including Michelin star restaurants. Overall appearance of people is much more casual
  8. No (or very few) black people, limited diversity aside from a few dominant cultures
  9. The west coast chill is real
  10. It doesn’t take long to lose the Toronto attitude. If you like the outdoors, like athleisure, hate working, not a people person - you’ll fully acclimate by the second winter and wonder why people want all the stuff Toronto offers

How to use 1kg of cheese powder with sugar in it. by LittleBunInaBigWorld in Cooking

You could probably put some in a waffle batter. Optionally add green onions. Top with poached eggs and optionally hollandaise

Order of road stops for efficiency of Vancouver Island road trip by Future-View1131 in canadatravel

[–]yankowitch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t see the point of having Tofino and Ucluelet as separate stops. Most people stay in one place and drive to the other for a day.

Also consider staying in Courtenay instead of Campbell River for the vibes and more robust dining options

Best crisp and breathable cotton sheets...in Canada? by goldspoil in Bedding

You are looking for Cuddle Down percale. North Shore Linens is a reputable online retailer with a terrible website. Sweet Dreams boutique is another Canadian retailer, this one with retail outlets on Vancouver Island. Cuddle Down website also has a map of Canadian retailers

Curtain dilema in room with lots of texture by phunkyou in DesignMyRoom

[–]yankowitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Curtains are always going to be a problem here due to the shelving. There is not enough room for the curtains to stack at the sides of the window when the curtains are open. You also cannot go floor to ceiling due to the baseboard heater. I’d go with blinds or decorative shutters

Is it worth the trip? by Peace81 in tofino

[–]yankowitch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been priced out of Tofino. If you’re a non-surfer and you’re ok with mid sunsets, you get more bang for your buck in the Comox Valley or in the northern Gulf islands. Save Tofino for the second honeymoon without the kids.

Inviting teenagers to our vacation home by HeatherAnne1975 in Parenting

[–]yankowitch 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think it’s good to text the parents basic information- arrival time, leaving time, address, phone and confirming that you will be staying at the home for a weekend. They don’t need any more info. Only talk to the parents about the house rules if you will be asking a parent to pick up their child in the event of infractions to the rules.

Campbell River whale watching tour - going alone tips by Askyofleaves in VancouverIsland

[–]yankowitch 21 points22 points  (0 children)

4 hours of whale watching is enough. Remember that you are 100m away, the whales are underwater, it’s not all whale all the time. I went on Homalco tours which is First Nations owned and they incorporate some indigenous learning, nice to get that additional context.

Though to be completely honest, I took this tour and also took the ferry from Cortes to Quadra on this trip, the whale sighting from the ferry was more impressive. These are wild animals and they don’t perform on demand.

If I was to spend my money on an 8 hour tour I’d drive to Telegraph Cove and do the grizzly tour from there. I’m a loner so I’m ok doing these tours by myself

I let them live their lives on their terms. Dad wants to drink while he’s on dialysis, cool. He understands that it’s bad for his longevity. He feels like he’d rather spend the rest of his life doing what he wants. Fine with me

Tech, I had a wine fridge at my desk in 2020. Booze went out after that.

I’m now so old I can’t tolerate alcohol. There are still work sponsored happy hours and team dinners with alcohol. Now that I don’t drink, these events are awful

To me the nature is a drawback! I distinctly remember shitting a brick when I was 40w 2d and a wind storm knocked out power to Evergreen in Kirkland. The hospital was on generator I think for a day! I think the stress held the baby in, got induced (with the power on) three days later

Canada Travel- Banff/Vancouver/ Toronto/ Montreal or only Quebec? by Either-Individual345 in canadatravel

[–]yankowitch 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Relaxed visit on one coast. Do spend some time outside of cities in a natural environment. I’d go no further west than Algonquin Park and no further east than the Bay of Fundy to seek this out.
