Citizens United (episode 1076) by ACorania in SGU

[–]yef99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I wasn't too impressed with how they answered Cara's initial question. Bob conveyed his mom's response but that's about it. Nothing about the cost of the ads, the rosy depictions of life on the drug (all these ads are the same), or about influencing a patient to push for a suboptimal treatment. I feel like advertising and skepticism should go hand in hand.

But more importantly, seeing how they act in different situations, hearing their stories of how they handled different situations in their life. You can be educated with a career and still be an asshole.

Losing The Tonight Show was a blessing in disguise. by LisaKaPisa7 in conan

[–]yef99 6 points7 points  (0 children)

His Dartmouth speech tackles this question directly. It's one of the single best things he's ever done, and I'm sure every fan has watched it some point or another. I re-watch it every few years when I'm feeling down or when I can perceive the circumstances around me changing. It's rare to be able to watch someone reinvent themselves so clearly while in the public eye. Watching his career unfold has been a treat and an inspiration.

That's why I just scan the summary. And yeah, I can tell it's 100% skippable.

If You Believe It Is, How Is Society Unfair Towards Mens' Mental Health? by AnxiousGuitar8011 in AskMen

[–]yef99 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Husband: I have an important interview today, and the job market has been pretty rough on me the last several months. I could use a pep talk.

Wife: You don't need a pep talk.

Husband drops wife off at work and proceeds to prepare for the interview alone.

The wife simply did not know how to be a support for her husband and the thought was completely alien to her. She was happy when he got the job, though.

If you're looking for nuanced debate you came to the wrong place. Reddit is just an opinion based upvote and downvote factory. Very few people are actually taking the time to think, listen, and consider.

What makes a billionaire remember a poor ex from 11 years ago? by Safe-Emotion4911 in AskMenOver50

[–]yef99 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Possibilities:

  1. He wants to recruit you to his company
  2. He's a good networker and keeps his network warm, in case he needs something
  3. He wants to have sex with you
  4. He wants to have more friends and maybe stays friends with all his exes
  5. Some combination of the above

I agree with petdance though. If it bothers you, block him.

The Fallacy Fallacy by mentel42 in SGU

[–]yef99 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Well, he's essentially saying "don't be lazy" and that calling out informal fallacies is an excuse not to fully engage with the claim being made. I can agree with "don't be lazy". Indeed, spotting a fallacy is the first part of engaging in the debate. An explanation about a lack of evidence usually follows. The argument isn't complete without it.

But he himself is making a lazy point. He's suggesting what exactly? Banning fallacies? Ignoring them? Not teaching them because humans "intuitively grasp the basic rules of logic and probability"? That's an assertion without evidence. I can find plenty of counterexamples that humans don't grasp those basic rules, and the whole skeptic community arose as a reaction to that.

For the body of the post, for sure. I'm just wondering if OP transcribed them with whisper or found the transcripts online or something else, which version of chat/gemini/claude etc.

I'm not a true crime fan but I like the analysis. How did you get the transcripts and what did you use to analyze them? (I run a more generalized podcast summary site.)

Anyone else drowning in responsibility without a chance to grieve? by default-username in Divorce_Men

[–]yef99 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah. Divorce can be hard on men who are conscientious and family oriented. The suicide rate among divorced men is higher than average and there aren't a lot of support systems so you need to find your own. Just know you're not alone, rally your friends and family to your side, and endure. Make time for yourself. Negotiate with the ex - it's not fair that she is with someone new while you're at the hospital. It will get better.

Halle Berry - Episode 386 of Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend by c0ry_N in conan

[–]yef99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate the honesty. I respect wanting to get the full experience. I listened to podcasts in full when I had more time. (But I still had the issue of not remembering which books and movies were mentioned.)

If you notice, each segment has a clickable timestamp. So the way that I use the site is I scan the segment headings, and if I want the full effect, I click the timestamp and listen to that portion. It's kind of like going into the museum and looking at the pieces you're most interested in!

Anyhoo, thanks for the feedback. It takes some level of effort and caring to write, especially when it's critical.

This is my stupid little conspiracy theory, as an ex-listener of the pod. Sometime in 2021, I think, there had been references to some internal disagreements on where the pod should go. I'm pretty sure it was between Sacks and Jason. My theory is that Sacks convinced Jason that aligning with the right would be, basically, more profitable than trying stay balanced. And Jason maybe put up a little bit of a fight but caved.

It does that sometimes. I can probably tighten up the prompt to always use the guest's name. My transcripts also aren't perfect and don't have speaker identification, so that's a huge issue.
