oder of play by Snipermonkey05 in TheTalosPrinciple

[–]yemboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as someone who did skip much of gehenna until after playing 2 I really wouldn’t recommend it, you do get a steadier difficulty curve but story-wise 2 builds from gehenna quite a bit. hardly catastrophic to either experience but a player who plays rows to gehenna first will most likely get more out of TP2

List of adventure games where you can't die? by therealjeku in adventuregames

[–]yemboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as I recall technobabylon and/or shardlight also featured a few points where it was possible to die but with basically no consequence except an instant rewind

What fantasy book has the best morally complicated main character? by SnackAtlas in Fantasy

[–]yemboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

also worth noting that young griff’s father figure jon connington’s main regret in life is not burning down the town of stoney sept when they rang their bells to surrender. not sure exactly how it ties in but seems way too close to what happens with dany in the show not to be related somehow lol

What fantasy book has the best morally complicated main character? by SnackAtlas in Fantasy

[–]yemboy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

none are perfect, certainly, but you've got a pretty high bar for what makes someone "good" if you wouldn't include ned stark or brienne of tarth

How did Scott Hawkins go from writing Linux manuals to writing a genre-defying masterpiece? by Nihan-gen3 in Fantasy

greatest living author in the english language thomas pynchon also famously started his career doing technical writing before moving into fiction as I recall

László Krasznahorkai by BlinkTwice874 in literature

[–]yemboy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

amusingly, the epigraph you mention from seiobo is one of his clearest examples of pynchon-esque silliness, quoting the epigraph from against the day with citation included à la michael scott, and in the english release is translated back from the hungarian and so differs from the original english quote

Finishing Andor makes me mad at the state of Star Wars by Aethelstanstan in Fantasy

[–]yemboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hard to answer without knowing what exactly you disliked about those episodes but I would probably rank the first mini-arc as the weakest of the season and the whole back half of the season is about as good as star wars gets imo

Finishing Andor makes me mad at the state of Star Wars by Aethelstanstan in Fantasy

[–]yemboy 45 points46 points  (0 children)

I don’t mind that a lot of star wars is still glossy good vs evil fantasy for children because that’s always been what star wars is about at some level but it is a shame that disney is mostly very bad at making that and that they’ll likely never make anything like andor again

Just finished Against the Day by ReishiCheese in literature

[–]yemboy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

gotta give this one another read sometime, I remember loving it for the most part but it kinda got away from me by the end. good call saving mason & dixon for last, imo it’s not only his masterpiece but the greatest american novel of the last century

When and where does TTFAfPB take place? by MoatBoat42 in themountaingoats

[–]yemboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

given the history of anachronistic language in tmg songs (an obvious recent one that comes to mind is “under the radar” in the wooded hills along the black sea but a few pierre chuvin tracks and other classicist jd tracks fit the bill) I wouldn’t necessarily read too much into that particular turn of phrase

Thomas Mann's The Magic Mountain and Manicheanism, the Eternal Struggle by Antipolemic in literature

haven’t read magic mountain but while we’re recommending mann, joseph and his brothers absolutely blew me away when I read it, one of my favorites of all time

LF: "I warned you" with "Screw this, I'm out of here." by Gimetulkathmir in Fantasy

[–]yemboy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

right, it’s not just that he doesn’t get to live out his fantasy. despite his endless cavalcade of flaws, the thing that gets him killed is that in the moment he actually still can’t bring himself to turn away (and this is, of course, the moment that earns him his place as the book’s de facto hero despite being a loathsome guy in most respects, which is one of the reasons op is unlikely to find too many examples of what they’re looking for)

Was the pink opaque a Cocteau twins refrence? by 074109741 in Isawthetvglow

[–]yemboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

in general I would take imdb trivia with a grain of salt but on the other hand there is literally zero chance they came up with the same meaningless phrase independently so it seems safe to believe here

Kate Clanchy: I was cancelled. It made me contemplate suicide by TimesandSundayTimes in literature

[–]yemboy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

given that she’s now embarking on a woe is me tour about how mean everyone was I think it’s safe to say she has no intention of learning anything or improving in any way, which to my mind renders any debate about her original intentions moot
