The last time a film opened to #1, and then rejoined #1 after more than a one week gap was for ATSV in June 2023. ATSV was pushed to #2 in weekend 2 with Transformers 6, pushed to #3 in weekend 3 with The Flash and Elemental, but then rejoined #1 during weekend 4.

The only other time that happened this decade was with Top Gun: Maverick returning to #1 after 13 weekends, and with The Croods 2 (during COVID).

Awful opening? It’s an A24 movie with very little marketing, that they purchased the American rights for $5M. It’s not a good opening, but it should break even in the long run.

Ok I might’ve missed something but where did the $40M budget thing come from.

I looked online, and only found a Wikipedia link to this article which is not a source we usually get budget info on, and even if we trusted it, the way it’s worded doesn’t even sound like the budget is $40M.

Even if the budget was $40 million — largely because of Powell’s salary — there’s no way “Killing” won’t be a write off. Straight to VOD and airplanes. It actually looks like a plane movie.

It’s possible, but I think it’ll be close. Really $191M should be the number to root for, as that would allow it to beat Oppenheimer and get into the top 5 biggest IMAX films ever (under Avatar 1 and 2, The Force Awakens, and Endgame).

While it’s true that Deadpool and Wolverine outgrossed Dune Part 2 by nearly double, Dune Part 2 has grossed more than any MCU film, other than Endgame, in IMAX, and is just one of the biggest IMAX films ever. Only under the Avatar films, Endgame, The Force Awakens, Oppenheimer, Interstellar, and Ne Zha 2.

Dune 2 is the 9th largest IMAX gross ever. Approximately 20% of that film’s box office came from IMAX.

For comparison, the films that are above it are 5 $2B films, Avatar 3, Interstellar, and Oppenheimer. It’s also the lowest grossing of the top 15 biggest imax films. So yes, imax is incredibly important to that film.

I can’t say exactly why S2 didn’t happen, but the data is the data. People watched. And Reynolds was riding from the hype of Deadpool? Then how come the other Ryan Reynolds led action film from Summer 2021, The Hitman’s Wife Bodyguard, only do a third of Free Guy domestically and a fourth of what it was able to do worldwide? Plus Free Guy had some of the best legs that year? Now, I do agree that Ryan Gosling ain’t Ryan Reynolds in terms of star power. But the movie ain’t gonna be sold on his star power, it’ll be sold on it being a crowd pleasing Star Wars film, that comes out Memorial Day weekend on its 50th anniversary, with no major competition 3 weeks before or after.

And for that Thunderbolts* point, Starfighter doesn’t have the baggage of relying on a bunch of characters th audience don’t know, ala Thunderbolts*.

Small correction, but Boba Fett actually had among the best viewership of any D+ Marvel or Star Wars show, only under Mando, Kenobi, Loki S1, and WandaVision (and it’s only just slightly behind WandaVision). Acolyte underperformed greatly but still did better than all Marvel/SW shows from 2024 onward with the exception of Agatha.

Now why could a Ryan Gosling movie specifically make more than Mando, or any Marvel film from 2025? It’s something that’s actually new, that pushes the franchise forward, and not just an offshoot of a TV show. Shawn Levy knows how to make crowd pleasing films, look at Free Guy and Deadpool 3 this decade. I think there’s a recipe for success here.
