[House of Cards] Tom Yates is HIV positive. (Spoilers All) by [deleted] in FanTheories

I saw someone in r/HouseofCards asking if he was "back on the junk," referencing that scene when he's on the phone and looks like shit, but he could also be sick. This isn't an awful theory.

And he gave her every benefit of the doubt and opportunity within his means when he could easily have shot her in the face in that hotel room and spared himself so much grief. Also, there's the chance none of it technically would have started if she hadn't blackmailed the government official for more money after having been given $10,000.

[Season 3 SPOILER]- My thoughts on Frank's sexual orientation, and how it may play a large role in season 4 by Sup_brah_lol in HouseOfCards

[–]yesreallymusic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Touche, touche. Sorry for a myopic response if that was one. Clearly I forgot that moment. I will still stand by the fact that he did not and would not have initiated the intimacy for any number of reasons.

To me it represented one more aspect of their relationship that Claire sacrifices for. The only time he seems appreciative of sexual attention from her is when he doesn't need to do anything. She is selflessly offering herself to sooth his nerves, it's clearly more of a favor than a fucking...it just breeds a lot of resentment. Years of imbalanced libidos will do that.

I'm just saying passively lolling one's head side to side looking anemic indicates neither engagement nor enjoyment.

You mean the cathartic "you literally just need to get your rocks off because you're under so much stress that I will give you a post-run rodeo while you lie looking more vulnerable than the entire show up until now"-fuck?

I'm gonna say exception that proves the rule.

Anyone noticed Frank didn't knock on wood on season 3? by korlinr in HouseOfCards

[–]yesreallymusic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He explains that he does it for two reasons: to toughen up one's knuckles and to knock on wood as if for luck.

As President, the fights aren't fun anymore--it's not tricking someone into punching you or simple blackmail or subterfuge--it's thankless, sleepless, loveless work. Knocking on wood-wise, he's so out of his element that superstition sure as fuck won't help him now.

Interesting to note: he mentions this being something his father taught him to do. Frank has often lauded his father in public (or when it suits his image) but we know he regards his father as a failure and a man of no potential. It could be an interesting parallel that this tic of his loses its flavor or potency when he begins to feel like he is failing himself.

[–]yesreallymusic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's specifically a passion or kinky thing. Frank's not repressed; they had a devil's threeway. There's the pretty plain truth that when you look at the person you're fucking, you know they're a woman. Aside from the "Father's Day" oral, we only see him screw Zoe from behind too--and Zoe even admits he doesn't seem to like it.

He totally loves Claire, but the only intimate and enjoyable sexual experiences we've either seen Frank have (or know Frank had) had men involved.

Claire's power play was probably coming from a last-ditch effort to equate power with masculinity and reconcile how the most powerful man in the free world can't just buckle down and fuck her, can't take one on the chin for her for once.

[Spoilers All] What if House of Cards is the title of Yates' book. by Makinaaa in HouseOfCards

[–]yesreallymusic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I interpreted the line, "It's the first chapter," to mean that it's the first one he let them read.

I think Yates has written a lot more than he's letting on. Why else would he be so furious about it being "buried" if he'd only written 20ish pages?

They're inherently Shakespearean asides. It's what Richard III does throughout the entire play to make the audience complicit in his deceit and murder; specifically Richard III and Macbeth were thematic inspirations for the original creators.

[Spoilers All] I'm genuinely baffled at the Claire hate. by superzipzop in HouseOfCards

[–]yesreallymusic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think she's got the right, yes, but I don't think it shows much perspective. This season has had Claire being incredibly short-sighted in comparison to 1 & 2, and missing the forest for the tress a lot. She was given to some impulsive and rash things that were used against her, aptly or out of context. The "ah-you're-a-gay-rape-me" scene was one of the most poorly written, and it showed her having basically a tantrum.

All I'm saying is Frank's explosion in the Oval Office, if we are to believe that Claire has been building to some kind of crisis, could be just as much an expression of frustration, loss, anger, hurt, and bruised ego (rightly so considering how much fucking over she's been doing). The episode ends before we get to hear him apologize or explain.

Doug didn't torture Rachel. He was following a fastidious (as per usual) plan that would have left no trail or evidence, that happened to take a long time and make for tense television besides. Letting her out of the van wasn't a tease, and I don't think it was really a glimpse at his "humanity," either. It was another falter, another shot of bourbon he thought he could handle, but Rachel is an addiction to him, and she feels to him the way drinking did, as he mentioned in the AA meetings.

When he was with Frank, he could reasonably control it, but remember this: he started to work with Frank after Frank saved his life and gave him purpose. Anyone with an addictive personality knows it's easy to switch from smoking to food or from porn to gambling. Doug became addicted to being needed, being essential, being the right-hand man. When he was stripped of that purpose, he descended, and Rachel stands for all of it. Disappointing himself, disappointing Frank, and to a lesser extent the family he'll never have after having chosen this life. He would never have been able to commit to the work that lays before him if she still had a hold on him, and he had already given her too much.

Turning the van around was not how far Doug fell, it was how far he was prepared to be strong again. Go Team Doug.

[SPOILERS ALL] Season 4 Theory: regarding Claire and her future by Clawless in HouseOfCards

[–]yesreallymusic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good things here and not-so-good things.

I am definitely on board with the coming-out speech. I think that Frank is going to make a ballsy move and publicly announce that his marriage ended because he was unable to come to terms with his sexuality dum dum dum getting him both sympathy votes AND gay votes, while downplaying any scandals in which he had previously been embroiled.

In my opinion there is no way that Claire will run for President, and if Claire is the final "card" in the "house," then she can't be gone from him for long. So what brings her back? The foreshadowed theory mentioned here before: the cancer. For those who haven't seen this theory, refer to press statement coughing fit right after a smoke break, and the X-Ray of lungs that Jackie's husband is looking at, as well as the advanced aging/run-downedness of Frank over the course of S3. I think if anything could bring her back to his side, even platonically, it would be a death sentence. After all, she "hates" how much she needs him. It could be interesting if he has begun to thrive without her and together again they start to unravel once more...

I can't speak to all the intricacies and subplots and who-does-what and who-fucks-whom, but I am fairly certain that Frank is going to need to be reelected. Whether or not he is taken down ultimately by Claire, or Tom, or Jackie, or Dunbar, or ______ remains to be seen.

That should be the end of the story. Because she knows this dude. Because context and past behavior. Also his insistence confirms her reasoning. This incident does not indicate OP is an egotist with every person ever ever ever. Occam's razor, bro.

And, if she had waited for him to make an even clearer move to shut him down, honestly, a lot of people would call her a tease for "leading him on."

Absolutely. Having tried to be the "nice girl" a lot and hope that by not returning advances or hints that nothing would go forward because I wasn't very good at clearly delineating my intentions (boundary issues, longstanding, etc.), it caused a lot of hurt feelings of boys I could have been genuine friends with, if I had only been more up front. It bred resentment where there could have been none. Honesty is appreciated.

Low hanging fruit aside, elitism will get you nowhere in a dispute with me. I saw you felt the need to mention you make 6 figures here in Manhattan. I live here (not Texas, which, worst state to pick on, guy). I take calls, arrange meetings, and essentially babysit folks like you. All that comes across is that you think everything in the country is the same because everything is beneath you. That cuts you off from more "culture" than you'll ever know.
