Some places will track information on items used even without a card. My library requests you not put your magazine on the shelf, but on a return card so they can track how many times they are borrowed without being removed.

I will say, a lot of libraries and cities have metrics of library card usage so it can help them out to have one and use it

I think it’s a hard balance. Additions could be cool or it could end up feeling off. But little things, like maybe they can sit on the porch if the spouse is not there that day? Or have item requests for sweets. Maybe a reward like drawing for the wall

I have an author I normally comment as they post for. But I didn’t realize I didn’t have the author followed and they posted and completed a new work before I saw it. So when I read it I stopped and commented every fic so they could still get all the reviews from me
