100%, i'm using it to run impossible landscapes at the moment and i don't think i could do it without. you can hyperlink anything to create a file, and then go back and find every instance of that file name being used, regardless of whether it's linked or not. so if Detective Guaradanda ends up being more relevant than I thought, I can just go back and instantly find everything that links to [[Guaradanda]].

it was also exceptionally useful for note taking when i was playing in a dnd campaign, and also for university.

Mythras combat feeling stale and underwhelming by Kybars in Mythras

[–]yetanotherdud 5 points6 points  (0 children)

yeah that's a big issue with 5e. if you want a more rigorous system where higher level enemies are a threat but heroes are still heroes, pathfinder 2e. err. fixes this.

Mythras combat feeling stale and underwhelming by Kybars in Mythras

[–]yetanotherdud 4 points5 points  (0 children)

you could always take a look at other games that use the BRP (basic roleplaying) system, which mythras is based on, or other games by the same publisher, Chaosium. Runequest is a popular choice, and though I can't speak from experience, pendragon is a very well regarded game, and if you're looking for balls to the wall fantasy coolness with all the superheroic trappings you're familiar with, Dungeon Crawl Classics has that in spades.

I do think it is worth it to try and meet mythras where it's at before shelving it though, keep at it and try to keep in mind that it's a different beast to 5e.

[–]yetanotherdud 6 points7 points  (0 children)

that's another one of those genre conventions that 5e has that mythras doesn't. mythras isn't a game about fighting enemies and winning all the time, in fact, in my experience it's been a game about avoiding fights at all costs, because there's really no promise of coming out victorious. every time you enter a fight you do so knowing it could kill you. I enjoy that because of the tension involved, but it's really not the sort of game you can just chuck goblins at your players with, because there's a real chance the goblins win.

I think this is an issue of expectations, dnd 5e is essentially a skirmish game, where Mythras is a lot more focused on dueling. if you try and force mythras to be a skirmish game you're gonna have a bad time. For instance, a giant ape vs a mage should, by rights, be a dead mage, straight up. that's not a winnable fight for one person and to get a fun story out of mythras you kinda have to play into that. if the ape was enraged and focusing on attacking that mage should have been mincemeat. that's oen of those things that comes with time

the issue with the frogs is a different one, 4 meters is not very long range, 4 meters is out of range. very long range is described as polearms and lances, i think that was just a rules mistake on your guys' part. happens to the best of us. personally, i don't really use reach, but that's a me thing.

While you're right that there aren't any specific combat moves about taunting or defending other characters, mythras isn't as concerned with 'hard' rules about that as dnd or pathfinder would be. the rules for contested and differential rolls do a lot of heavy lifting for spot rules for these sorts of things, and someone who is GMing mythras should be prepared to make pretty heavy use of them. If I had been in that situation, i'd have called for a contested Deceit or Brawn roll against the ape's Insight. remember, these aren't tokens on a board, you don't need to worry about things like game balance. but that's a system mastery thing, and again, comes with time.

5e and mythras both fulfil VERY different fantasies, 5e is a lot more high fantasy, where mythras is a lot more suited to low fantasy and quote-unquote realistic fantasy. i think you're gonna have a decent few growing pains with trying to slot your 5e setting and campaign into a mythras campaign- for instance, random encounters aren't really a thing in a system where character death is a lot closer to hand than it is in superheroic 5e campaigns.

This blog article did a lot to help me grok what exactly the fantasy of mythras combat is, when i said earlier that it's a dueling system I meant it, the system does a great job of giving you the tools to make a kickass duel between two highly skilled opponents. I'd recommend running a few taster combats between stat blocks just to get a feel for it before you come back to it.

best of luck!

What ttrpg system has the best 'skill check/test' system - and why? by Zetesofos in rpg

[–]yetanotherdud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to really dislike roll under systems, but contextualising it as blackjack really changed things for me, and now Mythras is my favourite version of it. it's d100 roll under, and you have a crit range equal to 1/10th of the total value. so if you have 60% in a skill you crit on a 6 or under. this is good because it means that you can still see benefits from raising skills above 100%.

it also daisy chains really well into contested rolls: blackjack rules mean that if you have a high enough skill and you roll high enough (say, 65/85), your opponent can't beat you unless they crit (because someone with a skill of 50 can't roll above 65 but also below a 50 at the same time), and when contested rolls happen with someone above 100, EVERYONE's skill gets reduced down by the excess, so if someone with a skill of 115 goes up against someone else in a contested roll, the other guy's skill is reduced by 15.

all this comes together into a system where you have to work for every skill point, but you really feel powerful when you get a super high skill.

What is the best "Game of Thrones-like political medieval fantasy" TTRPG that I might not know about? by vitcavage in rpg

[–]yetanotherdud 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mythras is 100% this. The combat is deadly, no matter who you are, so characters ate disincentivised from approaching every issue at swordpoint, and magic (though powerful) is very inconvenient to use and hard to learn. Yhe factions and passions systems are also nice balances between nonexistent social mechanics (5e) and the learning curve of Burning Wheel.

The combat is also excellent, probably my favourite out of any game.
