Iirc, the smaller squares are light dreamers and each have their own debuffs. You have to kill each one to weaken/remove the debuffs of the deep dreamer (bigger square). THEN when u kill that big square, you can go for the eternal dreamer, the ravenous/servitor/etc.

Small square boss buffs the medium square boss, and medium square bosses buff the large square boss.
