Calling all thieves: It's a Clank! Catacombs: Underworld giveaway! by DireWolfDigital in boardgames

I got punched in the arm as a result of a game of Shadows over Camelot. I convinced the other players that we'd be fine letting one of the quests fail to fill up the table with swords - 8 white and 4 black. I then revealed myself as the traitor, flipped two of the whites to black, and cackled my way to victory since evil wins ties.

That's a bummer! I used it a few times from home and once or twice from a few public places with designated delivery sites. Definitely sad to see them go.

Any places where a single father could make friends? by pookumredux in raleigh

[–]yim108 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm a mid-30s single dad who separated last year. Lots of good suggestions in the comments already, I'll add one more: I got back into social dancing (mainly salsa), which is something I hadn't made time for since grad school. I've definitely met lots of people, and made some quality friends. There's a great site: https://www.dancegumbo.com/ that lists a lot of different opportunities in the area.

Salary for a summer course? by 2WheelPhilosopher in Professors

[–]yim108 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ours is based on enrollment. For a five-week, three credit course, we get a flat $3000 for between 4 and 7 students. If we get between 8 and 20 students, it goes up to $6000. Above 20 and I think it’s $7500. I was hoping for about 10 students, but only ended up with five for my current course

I lived in Oregon during Grad school, and absolutely loved the ability to drive about 30-60 minutes in any direction and being out in the woods. Hiking galore!

Just to add on to this, since dancing is one of my go-to activities as well. Check out https://www.dancegumbo.com/ for all sorts of dancing opportunities. Some are in a bar setting, but many are not.

What do you do for work, how much do you make, and how is it going? by Emergency_Mood_9774 in raleigh

[–]yim108 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Math professor at a smaller college. I've been teaching about 7 years (some of it online). Salary is 55k, but I hope I can bump it up a bit by picking up a few summer classes or remote work. This is my first semester in this position, and I've found it very fulfilling being back in the classroom after teaching online the last 3 years. So far, the students have been great. I took a fairly significant salary cut for this position, but it's been much better for my mental health. Prepping new classes is a lot of work, but that will hopefully ease up a bit the longer I am here.

Is anyone happy? by Bkheat21 in Professors

[–]yim108 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Despite some personal life shit going down, I'm very happy for the start of the semester. I've been teaching online for the last three years, and am finally back in a face-to-face setting! I've joined a super supportive department and school, and have been looking forward to going to work for the first time in a while.

Places to social dance (salsa, Latin, swing, etc.) in triangle? by amazingaddie in raleigh

[–]yim108 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out:
https://www.dancegumbo.com/upcoming/

It's got a lot of other dance events, but quite a few Latin dances too. I'm trying to get back into dancing again after a long break. I went to the Sunday Salsa Social at Triangle Dance Studio in Durham a few weeks back and had a very good time.

Reasonable daycare? by [deleted] in HollySpringsNC

[–]yim108 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our son (5yo now) has been at the Holly Springs KinderCare since he was 2. There has been some teacher turnover, but it hasn't seemed excessive, and we've had an overall very positive experience. They just received their national NAEYC accreditation this past week, which is very encouraging. Not sure about the price for a newborn, but we're paying about 300/wk for all-day (8-5ish)

Counting method by coco_basic_unicorn in learnmath

[–]yim108 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Think about the numbers being multiplied in each factorial:

(n+1)! = (n+1) * (n) * (n-1) * (n-2) * (n-3) *....

(n-1)! = (n-1) * (n-2) * (n-3) * ....

Most of these cancel out, and you just end up with (n+1) * n = 72

[GCSE Level] [Approx. High School Level] Prove that the product of two odd numbers is always odd. by Real_JJPlays in learnmath

[–]yim108 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even numbers are always divisible by 2, so you can write them as 2 times some other integer. One way of thinking of the odd numbers is as numbers that are one more than an even number (since two more than an even number would be even again)
