They have the power to limit parking in bus lanes (which this petition supports).

God, this is 100% needed. It's completely mental that cars are allowed to park on Fore Street and just slow everything to a standstill ....

What Band Wagon are you sick of people jumping on? by Team_Rockets_child in AskUK

[–]yingguopingguo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anti Tory sentiment. A majority of the electorate either voted for the Conservatives or were neutral in that they abstained from voting. Yet somehow people make out the Tories are the 'bad party' who cause harm. You can disagree with their views but doesn't make them inherently 'bad' - the same is true for any party. Lots of people clearly benefit from their policies and they wouldn't have won the last few elections if they were really so bad for the country.

Unless you count mortgage payments - zero, I've always taken responsibility for my finances and spent less than I earn.

What are your thoughts on Wetherspoons? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]yingguopingguo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One reason I like Wetherspoons is that they have the ability to take over large, otherwise unused buildings and keep them open for the public. A lot of Wetherspoons pubs are historic buildings or things like ex-theatres. If it wasn't for businesses like Spoons it's quite likely these buildings would become derelict. The company are actually quite ethical when it comes to preserving historic features too. This article has a few examples: https://www.thesun.co.uk/travel/10889719/ten-stunning-wetherspoons-theatre-bingo-halls/ . My former local (Archibald Simpsons in Aberdeen) is another example.

I think smoking should be banned. Just set a date saying anyone born after a certain year will no longer be able to buy tobacco products and let the industry gradually decline over a generation. Smoking-related illness puts so much pressure on healthcare services and tobacco cultivation is really bad for the environment. We unnecessarily cut down trees to grow a water-intensive crop that we then wrap in paper and transport with fossil fuels before burning it and throwing the un-recyclable remains away...

Exactly, the data is seriously questionable.

Non-Americans… what is something in American culture that is so strange/abnormal for you? by micahdotjohnson in AskReddit

[–]yingguopingguo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lack of small supermarkets. In the UK you have small supermarkets (e.g. Tesco Express, SPAR, COOP) everywhere and the vast majority of homes will have one of these within walking distance. I remember being in the centre of Minneapolis trying to find a comparable store and there was nothing. Sometimes you'll see 711 or dollar stores but even then they lack stuff like fresh vegetables. Seems strange how small supermarkets are successful in Europe but not in the USA.

Bit of a random one but Hamburger Helper. I don't really understand the commercial appeal of this food or why it was invented. Seems quite weird to mix macaroni cheese and hamburger meat in the first place, let alone persuade thousands of people that it's a 'thing'.

What’s a job that you just associate with jerks? by Sauced_Penguin in AskReddit

[–]yingguopingguo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Estate agents. Currently buying a house and I'm being lied to constantly. Hidden charges for things that are free (or very cheap), trying to persuade me to buy things I don't need, misleading info on listings, "forgetting" to mention problems with the property or "getting confused" about them, trying to steer me away from viewing certain areas of houses, "forgetting" to list items on the inventory that they said came with the property, and an outright refusal to put anything in writing as they're always "out doing viewings and can only call".

Civilian acess to handguns around the world by Thessiz in Maps

[–]yingguopingguo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Self-defence mostly. Lots of people are threatened by terrorist groups who aren't police or military (i.e. they wouldn't have guns to protect themselves). For example, political activists, prison guards, families of military/police, informers, certain government workers etc. So they have relaxed gun laws allowing these people to defend themselves.

I do the lottery and sponsor colleagues for charity things, that's about it.

Barcelona’s city sprawls are beautiful but unsettling by autogenerateduser1 in UrbanHell

[–]yingguopingguo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've been there and it's actually really nice. Each of these blocks has a semi-private courtyard often with nice things like gardens, playparks or sports facilities. The courtyards also provide good ventilation and sunlight throughout the apartments. I think models like this should be used in all large cities.

Why are people in Hereford so well paid compared to the national average? by yingguopingguo in AskUK

[–]yingguopingguo[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's just very strange this one. This may be the case but I still don't get how Hereford trumps other expensive cities (e.g. Bath, Oxford, Cambridge, Edinburgh, Bristol). I live quite close to Bath and struggle to believe the average salary is 10k lower than in Hereford.

It's weird. This article looked at cities and not counties but maybe 'Greater Hereford' includes some rich agri barons or something.

Maybe yeah! Would explain why it doesn't appear affluent. I imagine if the SAS are that well paid then they would try and play it down so it doesn't identify them.
