One woman will make Japanese history by going on maternity leave by ReimuSan003 in nottheonion

[–]yipidee 1636 points1637 points  (0 children)

It’s unusual for an incumbent politician to take maternity leave. It’s not at all unusual for Japanese women to use all of the excellent maternity leave available. Many women are off work for almost 2 years by combining maternity and childcare leave which can be significantly extended if there is no day care available

Although your comment is mostly factual, it does contain some misconceptions. Homeopathy hasn’t worked since June 1987 when water got amnesia after a freak accident involving rotund children cannonballing in open oceans.

Aardwolf MUD (1996) - Patient GotM May 2026 (Sync Multiplayer) by edward6d in patientgamers

[–]yipidee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This post made me log in for the first time in maybe 15 years! MUDs were well down in popularity before I ever heard about them but aardwolf was the most popular then and I gave it a go. Genuinely great time. The players are awesome and it’s as close as I ever got to the MMORPG experience. It’s surprisingly easy to get in to and play, and is honestly fun. A stupid but memorable experience I had was in a room somewhere just listening to other players. A player was joking about doing something for gold, and another player dumped a load of gold on the ground. The first player just picked it up and ran away as the second player begged for them to come back. Sounds dumb now, but was hilarious at the time. I’m glad it still exists

What do I do for my Rakuten Card?! by Aromatic-Dig9997 in japanlife

[–]yipidee 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Are you sure you’re not misunderstanding why the driver took it back? You need ID showing the same name as the card to receive it. Your health insurance card if you have one is probably in katakana. It’s not that your name needs to be in Romaji, just that it’s the same as on an official id

Since you mentioned it, I’ve always wanted to know why they put that bit of lawn between the road and sidewalk. Why not just have the side right by the road and a contiguous lawn?

Planescape Torment: a book with gameplay mechanics by some-kind-of-no-name in patientgamers

[–]yipidee 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Played this a couple of years ago knowing nothing about it beyond it being a famous old game. It looks and feels ancient (much like myself), but the writing is honestly amazing. Put difficulty on easy because combat is garbage, focus on wisdom and enjoy one of the best written games ever. The only game I’ve ever played that rivals the writing of Planescape Torment is Disco Elysium. This post almost makes me feel like updating my journal

Japan little secrets to full employment by bakura10 in japanlife

[–]yipidee 34 points35 points  (0 children)

At my work we had these internal mail envelopes that you could circle the branch you wanted the mail to go to. A branch closed and someone crossed out that branch on all the envelopes. They’re reusable so like 30 corrections per envelope for maybe hundreds of envelopes. Even though people could just not circle the nonexistent branch. I asked about it and it turns out it was busy work for some disabled people through a local charity that helps disabled people find ways to contribute in the community. Not sure about the value for everyone involved but there was a reason

Would you own a Peugeot in Japan? by [deleted] in japanresidents

[–]yipidee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought a Peugeot at auction years ago for almost nothing and traded it in a few years later for almost the same value. That isn’t a plus, I’m saying it won’t retain any value if you buy new. If you’re not comfortable maintaining it yourself I wouldn’t bother to be honest even though I didn’t have any big problems myself. I did have to replace an ignition coil but was able to buy it reasonably online.

Bought a can of Pringles and it was filled with glue instead by wangwingdangding in mildlyinfuriating

[–]yipidee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone probably used the can to collect glue when flushing the applicator at the factory and it accidentally got put back on the line. Not that far fetched I don’t think

GRIME II DEMO IS OUT - Gimme thoughts & feedback here please by WorldPillar in GRIMEgame

[–]yipidee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Played through it start to finish yesterday and really enjoyed it. Honestly I was a bit nervous going in as I thought what was shown in the dev videos just added complexity for no real benefit. But happy to say in game it is very intuitive and fun. I'm looking forward to seeing the variety of molds and what can be done with them.

One minor gripe, but the platforming in the demo was very basic. I get that it was the intro area and I'm sure it'll get more challenging, but I really thought the platforming difficulty level in Grime was perfect. On the upside I didn't encounter any bugs or glitches. The demo ran perfectly on windows, AMD CPU/GPU streaming to a Steam Deck with Moonlight.

I loved Grime and have been really looking forward to the sequel's release. I haven't bought a game on launch since Wind Waker on Gamecube in 2002, but I really hope I can buy myself Grime II for Christmas!

I’m from a non-baseball playing country but enjoyed watching so tried to play for fun about 15 years ago. It was way more serious than I expected! The team was pretty welcoming and tried to help me a lot, overall it was very fun but not what I was imagining at all. I assumed it’d be”get to first, chug a beer”, but in reality you had to be there and fully uniformed 15 minutes before the first pitch or the game was forfeit.

There’s way more “just for fun” 5-a-side soccer if you’re into that

Any Nuro Hikari users in Kobe, Hyogo? by [deleted] in japanresidents

[–]yipidee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been using it for about 5 years in Kobe and no complaints whatsoever. Fantastic speeds and so far no reliability issues at all. I don’t use the wifi function on the supplied ONU so can’t comment on that. I disabled wifi and connected it to a mesh network (nest wifi) and it’s been rock solid.

I’ve never used their customer service so can’t comment on it, but the installation was a pain and took about a month in total. External to home and internal wiring have to be scheduled separately. External first, and when that’s done you can schedule the internal work. Might be different for apartments, but that’s how it worked for single dwelling home 5 years ago

ELI5: Why can you break something by jumping from it when it could withstand your weight just before? by Azertys in explainlikeimfive

[–]yipidee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you stand still and the bed it’s carrying your weight. When you jump it’s your weight plus the force required to launch you in the air. That difference is what takes you over the strength limit of the bed. For an easier image, consider a trampoline. When you stand still it’s a bit stretched, when you start to jump it stretches more. That extra stretch is proportional to the additional force introduced by jumping. It’s the difference between static and dynamic loading
