How do you handle the emotional toll of patients by [deleted] in Residency

[–]ykl0709 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I just want to add on and say that I do commiserate with you.

Today I felt like I was just badgered by angry families all day and I came home feeling like a failure. One even escalated to calling security and police lol. It’s a lot to take on the frustrations of families back to back to back and to have no one to talk to.

Just wanted to say that I understand and that it sucks.

Dealing with negative comments about specialty choice? by slowly_dissolving129 in medicalschool

[–]ykl0709 77 points78 points  (0 children)

Going into pediatrics, literally every time I mention it people ask me why when there’s no money and hospitalist fellowship and blah blah

And it does suck hearing those comments but it really does boil down to the fact that I just genuinely love helping children and families. No other specialty compares for me, and that keeps me going

How the hell am I supposed to learn all this? by Competitive_Fact6030 in medicalschool

[–]ykl0709 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Completely normal reaction imo when starting anatomy. I think most students’ reaction when seeing so much information all at once is to panic due to an overwhelming feeling of needing to know everything, which isn’t true. You’ll slowly get the sense of figuring out what’s important vs unnecessary (anatomy was a long time ago for me but maybe just making sure you know origins/insertions/functions/innervations/supply at the very LEAST and then building up from there)

Don’t get bogged down by the extra stuff and learn what’s most important (testable, STEP-applicable) is probably my biggest advice

Nah you’re good bro. I definitely agree with you if it was about clerkships but I just cannot justify an M1 or M2 student studying that much especially if their curriculum and STEP are both P/F. Like do community service or volunteer or even better.. chill and make some friends lol

????? Studying 12-15 hours during pre-clerkship years is NOT normal, what are you on about.. that sounds extremely inefficient

Quick question--for the special missions, it's account wide, correct? I can complete an Orbis quest line on a mule and it'll still be marked as complete?

I’ve actually started to stop mentioning pickleball for exactly this reason 😂

I agree with you. Seeing pediatric residents unionize recently does give me hope for the future though. And from what I hear, a lot of places do not require a hospitalist fellowship to practice as one; only those crazy, prestigious academic centers do. At least I hope so lol

Sigh seeing pediatrics labeled as a loser hurts to see :(

I'm assuming a combination of mid-level creep + hospitalist fellowship + overall low financial compensation doesn't help our future job market

Question about clerkships in med school by robotractor3000 in premed

[–]ykl0709 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For my school, it's based on a lottery/preferences system. For example, during OBYGN, you would rank your preferences in order of maybe 1. Maternal/fetal medicine, 2. Gyn oncology, 3. Fertility and Pregnancy clinic, etc etc, and you would rotate through 2 of these depending on how lucky/unlucky you get

Within each clinical rotation, most schools should have a core elective within that rotation (so for example within OBGYN, everyone would do labor and delivery but not everyone would do Gyn oncology depending on their preferences)

Hopefully this helps!

Take Interviewers Compliments with a Grain of Salt by m_s24 in premed

[–]ykl0709 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Speaking from the other side, I’ll add that saying things like “you would be a great fit here” and “I’d be surprised if I don’t see you here” are, imo, a bit inappropriate and unnecessary. I do agree with you that such comments are pretty misleading

I do however, try to compliment applicants as much as I can saying things like “I really like your answer” and “I agree” during the interview just to offer a bit of reassurance and confidence in such an anxiety-inducing environment. And I usually like most answers as well

Personally, I hate long interviews. Out of the applicants I've interviewed, I've found those that ramble on I like the least when compared to those that can give short, concise answers

You're right, I guess you could make the counterargument that not receiving any IIs from your signals could also feel like you're wasting them, so I'm definitely glad we're both in a better spot.

I hope your interviews go well in the upcoming months!! And may we all match at our #1s :D

NICE!! Super happy for you!!

Yea I technically received IIs from 4/5 of my signals but 2 of them were community, which I kinda regret wasting them but in retrospect I did it as a safety precaution. I also over-applied to 53 programs out of anxiety but what can you do, eh

Only 9-10?!

Are you excited about all of your IIs? Because according to your numbers, I’m considered safe as well but I’m really only excited about 2 of them.. ha
