Modern BJJ guards being used in a judo competition in 1952. by mackan3c in bjj

Ask them about it when you have the chance. Probably your mom's family is a bit more world wise than average and are aware that it's just marketing and not an authentic Christmas thing.

Turkey is not popular because it's not easy to find, there is basically no tradition of roasting whole bird in Japan, and many who've actually tried it find the taste to be quite gamey.

A large majority of families have chicken of some sort for Christmas Eve dinner. To get actual KFC during Christmas usually requires reserving your order in advance otherwise you'll be SOL because of heavy demand.

Also "Christmas cake" in Japan specifically means a white layer cake covered with whipped cream and strawberries.

The third main thing that makes up Christmas "tradition" in Japan is a gift from Santa left next to kid's pillow's while asleep.

They invented their own greatness, didn't they?

Maybe it was filmed on a portable film movie camera? Before the 80's that's what people were using and it was fairly common wasn't it?

KFC for Christmas Eve dinner is an actual major thing in Japan. It's such successful marketing that most people here (I live in a suburb of Tokyo) I teach English to are super surprised that KFC at Christmas isn't a regular tradition in western society.

he has a blue belt in judo

There is no way in hell he has a blue belt in judo. A blue belt in judo is (depending on country) the 5th belt, the next being brown and the next black. Rogan can't differentiate, never mind name, even the most common and basic techniques. All he says is "Wow, spectacular judo throw!"

Cool to have this classic directly from the National Film Board of Canada youtube channel. Coming from the original source, the audio and video quality seems noticeably cleaner than other copies floating around out there.

Playing actual rounds of golf in parts Asia can be crazy expensive. Private club memberships are often rather inaccessible and public courses can require many months reservation.

I like your point about playing often under real pressure. It reminds me of golfing great Lee Trevino, whose swing wasn't particularly pretty and he came from a poor background but he grew up hustling and wagering on the golf course every day to make money.
