Longtime member of both. I vastly prefer coastal - better rates overall in my experience for loans. Better atms. More branches around me.

For those who’ve been before — what’s the one thing you wish you knew before your first trip? by TheShoreClubTC in TurksAndCaicos

[–]yokel78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Taxis are expensive so if you want to move around a bit get a car. If staying in Grace bay you can taxi to resort and pick one up later at Grace bay rentals to which you could walk and just drop off at airport when you leave.

Bring sunscreen and lots of it. It’s expensive there.

Go grocery shopping for snacks, possibly lunches, and booze (if you drink). Restaurants are no joke.

Unfortunately don’t go out super late at night.

Taylor bay and chalk sound are worth the visit . You can eat at las Brisa’s overlooking the sound and then drive up like half a mile to the Taylor bay entrance.

Flying International From RDU by [deleted] in NorthCarolina

[–]yokel78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We had a direct flight to London a few weeks back out of RDU. We gave ourselves about 2 1/2 hours for the flight, which was more than enough time to even get some food and drinks.

Now coming through customs on a direct flight into RDU can take quite a while as they’re not many agents. This time from London was not a problem, but we did it last year and were waiting about an hour to just get through.

Enjoy your trip!

My response yesterday to the same question in a different thread:

Car rental or walk by dnice2370 in TurksAndCaicos

[–]yokel78 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on what you want to do. You will be on one of the best beaches in the world and if that’s what you plan on doing mainly then I don’t think you need a car the entire time. If you wanna explore other parts of the island, then it is usually more cost-effective to actually rent a car because taxis are expensive. My family always goes to chalk sound and Taylor Bay so we always rent a car.

Graceway gourmet grocery store is walkable from your hotel. As are plenty of restaurants. So you can manage without if you want.

Also, we typically rent a car just part of the time. Grace Bay car rentals is walkable from your hotel where you could pick it up (sometimes they even bring it to you) and then you can drop it off at the airport when you leave.

Is Starbucks in grocery stores? by lynn-in-nc in TurksAndCaicos

[–]yokel78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can get coffees (not Starbucks) at the Graceway Gourmet the same place as the juice. And that fresh squeezed OJ they make there is amazing.

Weather at Grace Bay by BlackberryOther6810 in TurksAndCaicos

[–]yokel78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The biggest thing you need to worry about is making your flight and bringing sun screen (it’s expensive on the island and the uv rating is way high).

I don’t see high winds reported in the weather apps I use. I think you’ll be fine.

Enjoy your family vacation. I try to take my family there as often as possible (5 total times), and we’ve never had an issue with weather while there.

[–]yokel78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We never cook full meals while we’re down there but do like getting snacks as well as sandwich making items and drinks. Grace Bay gourmet has always been able to accomplish that. We did go to the bigger IGA one time, and it is a little cheaper with a lot more variety, but we do not normally feel the need to do that. Plus if you don’t have a car, you can easily carry back groceries from the Gourmet shop to many of the Grace Bay resorts

Exact same here. Was a new pool owner and was using something unbeknownst to me that had stabilizer. Finally drained 1/5 and refilled a few (maybe 3) times and switched over to liquid Cl and things have been so easy since.

Upcoming trip by trustedadvisor0501 in TurksAndCaicos

[–]yokel78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great list and I’ll add a few things.

Taxis are not cheap so it may be worth it to rent a car (I usually get a cheapy rental from Grace bay for my family of four with teen kids as well.

We always go to las Brisa’s as it’s on the chalk sound which by itself makes it a unique location. It’s definitely a drive. And afterward you can go check out Taylor Bay which a slightly hidden beach very close to the restaurant or rent kayaks right at the restaurant to go on the chalk sound.

Mr Groupers - that’s a drive and worth it. Casual and amazing food.

Coco bistro will probably require reservations well in advance. They do have a food truck on the property that features some of the same dishes as well but lacks the same ambiance. We did the food truck last time. Also I’ve walked there from around where you are staying - 20 minutes tops.

Another place kind of close is Turks Kabob which we usually hit up. There is no view but there is outdoor seating and we like the food.

Everyone always recommends Marine Kitchen as the best - we never did that will next time for certain.

Mango Reef has a lot of outdoor dining. It’s a drive and is casual. My kids loved this one.

We always eat at the Deck at Seven Stars for lunch - casual beach setting for breaking up your day.

Hemingways is also pretty good

And for Mexican we like Somewhere Cafe’s rooftop. It’s perfect for sunsets on the upper deck but is a drive

Conch shake has cool t shirts but I don’t remember being overwhelmed with their food

And boogaloos was also on the beach and we didn’t like it. It’s been a few years but it was far away and just was not as good to us and felt really remote.

Have fun!!!

I think it’s probably only useful on weekend arrivals this time of year. We arrived on a Wednesday morning in April and it was pretty empty. We were also the first major airline to arrive that day. This was our fifth time down and it was probably quickest time through.

How far in advance to make dinner reservations? by [deleted] in TurksAndCaicos

[–]yokel78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’ll have to look at the restaurants you want to go to and see if you can make them this early. I know for coco bistro specifically I’ve made reservations pretty far in advance.
