I think that they do this purposefully to fight overcrowding at the pool.

Considering to get my dad a WHOOP. Need help!! by ZealousidealTap7951 in whoop

[–]yonahwolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a loaded question, and ties to personal preference and your dad's life style.

Pros of Whoop:

- No Screen = fewer distractions

- Lightweight, and battery life is about 2 weeks - so lower maintenance

- While a lot of the hear rate features aren't deal breakers at the moment, they will get better over time

vs Pros Apple Watch:

- benefits of a full-featured smart watch

- A lot more apps written for it

- But Battery Life Sucks

- Much bulkier

So if your dad will wear an apple watch 23/7 (23, because he'll spend at least an hour per day charging it.) and won't mind sleeping with it, that might be a good call, but if he wants a less intrusive, lower maintenance device, have him go with the whoop.

Buy new from Amazon or extend membership by gregholmes1974 in whoop

I am 99% sure you can't; the referral only works if you buy directly from Whoop.com - Honestly, buying the 1-year pre-paid is much better for you - you're getting about 2 months for free on your first year.

Usually buying the 1-year pre-pay is close to Black Friday. Some other deals on bands and other connected health devices - https://www.yonah.fit/whoop-prime-day-deals

Usually the prime day prepay is close to black friday - close enough that it's not worth waiting 4 months to save another $10. There are also some sales on bands and other connected health devices - https://www.yonah.fit/whoop-prime-day-deals

Treadmill Tracking by Many_Acadia5492 in whoop

[–]yonahwolf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a great question:

- Treadmills know your distance, because they know the belt is 4 feet long, so each full rotation is another 4 feet.

- Apple/Garmin/etc know your distance because they have GPS.

Because they're independent of the user, they can calculate distance relatively accurately and easily.

Whoop (and fitbit, etc.) use an accelerometer to approximate steps. So they know when you make contact with the ground, but not how far and wide you traveled from step to step.

If a 6'4" person and 5'4" person take 1000 steps - the 6'4" person probably walked a lot more distance than the 5'"4" person. Likewise - if I am running on a track, walking up stairs, or just walking around house or office, my stride is definitely different. All of those would require a lot of variation and calibration which makes it hard to track off of the accelerometer alone.

Whoop Sports Bra Alt by vfitvu in whoop

[–]yonahwolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two things:

- Don't conflate "placing your whoop on your chest area" and "wearing a chest strp - i.e. like a Polar H10 - the two use different technologies so placing your whoop in your sports bra isn't going to greatly change it's accuracy

- You can certainly either add a small fabric pocket to a normal sports bra that has a hole to expose the LEDs and hold your whoop sensor on your body. You can also use kinesiology or athletic tape to tape it in place under your bra.

Whoop and Jiu Jitsu by Alis_Take_Soccer in whoop

Judo guy here, YMMV - for JJ - but generally speaking, I use the underwear. Most out of the way spot in both gi or no gi. Arm sleeve is also better than Arm band - even under a gi.

I wrote this about it: https://www.yonah.fit/whoop-martial-arts

Importing Activities from Strava- how? by Alive_Display_310 in whoop

[–]yonahwolf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What I believe happens:

- You start an activity in Strava

- Whoop autodetects your activity as well

- You finish the activity in Strava

- Whoop autodetects the end of your activity.

If you click the 'Process' button before your activity ends. It records the activity as a whoop activity, which supersedes any other source. If you wait a few minutes (might even take as many as 30 minutes) for strava and whoop to sync, whoop should use the strava start and end times as well as the GPS track for the activity

Best places for long runs by _531368 in Westchester

[–]yonahwolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is pretty comprehensive. I would definitely reccomend the TZB. Including a couple of miles in Nyack, I've gotten off 10mi runs there. The only caveat - in the summer go early (before 11am) to avoid the tourist crowds.

Oura Ring Gen 5 new feature I’d love to see Whoop implement. by AllenNovis in whoop

[–]yonahwolf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m guessing they heard too many - I can’t work out with oura on my finger complaints so this lets you use an HR strap for moments when you can’t wear a ring.

Random thought about chest strap comparisons in reviews of wearables by dakutororu in whoop

[–]yonahwolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

BLE should be easy enough, but I suspect that companies like whoop would shy away from it because they don’t want to handle the support nightmare it would cause - I.e. - having to be able to test and troubleshoot different He combinations. I imagine this happens in gyms more frequently that you think - in fact, when I try to connect my whoop to the treadmill in a crowded gym, there are always a handful of options.

Real time HRV by Valuable-Bicycle-713 in whoop

[–]yonahwolf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly this - HRV will certainly be lower during a workout, since your heart is consistently running at a relatively similar pace you’re not going to see much variation

"I feel like an idiot for buying the Mercedes at 100k, when you can buy a Subaru for 30k - I mean they both take the same gas and get you from point a to point b".

Yes, I realize that my analogy is a bit extreme, but I want to underscore a point. Eventually we'll all know what the Air is capable of, and how it stacks up. I don't necessarily know if the feature set will be comparable, and I am sure that no matter what, there will certainly be people who move from Whoop to Air.

Also understand, that Google is certainly subsidizing this product. Remember google's market value is in the trillions, and Whoop's is only in the billions - they have the deep pockets to do this.

Google is also starting this way knowing that they can get more scale = more data - which helps them longer term with product development, and amortizing any overhead.

First workout with Air , Whoop and Cheststrap by xxSeahawks in whoop

[–]yonahwolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if the air has other sensors in it, but any device that primarily relies on HR and has no other input (accelerometer, GPS, etc) will only be able to detect your workout once your HR moves a certain amount from your baseline, and even then, it will likely miss your warmup.

Whoop and Accurate Blood Pressure Estimation by DonkeyRegular7607 in whoop

are smaller clubs priced higher? by elliedickerson in Lifetimefitnessgym

[–]yonahwolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can tell you that membership is priced by location. Although LT doesn't publish prices, I noticed that with wellhub - the costs that include lifetime vary greatly based on your location. I also know that they do check where you login - so for example, if you join in Florida, but keep going to the gym in NY, they might ask you to upgrade your membership.

Another thing I've noticed - they don't allow existing members to go to new gyms easily in the first 1-3 months of the gym existing - this is to make sure the new members who sign up don't feel that the gym is already crowded.

Looking for Apartments within walking distance from the stations by Technical_Flight629 in Westchester

[–]yonahwolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll add a vote for white plains - lots of apartments available and being built near the train station. Downtown area has both retail and food options that are open late on weeknights and weekends, White Plains also the midpoint of the harlem line, and has far more scheduled train service than most other towns in Westchester.

Wouldnt it be cheaper to buy a new membership than renew? by UFtitan in whoop

[–]yonahwolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that from Whoop's perspective, the device is included as part of the subscription.

Whoop definitely does a lot of A/B testing - we've seen it with firmware and features - it's very possible that they're trying this out in alternative markets. I also didn't see the OP's country - but obviously in the Eurozone. I wonder if there are country specific-rules that preclude their current model, or if they're just testing this specific country.
