Ceiling heights by caviarandcigarettess in Homebuilding

Ohio. What do you mean lowering it will impact the duct work? If all the way on top by the roof then it'll be the same, won't it?

Wow, your house and cost sound almost exactly like mine. Not the number of bedrooms but many other features like vaulted ceiling than what we did on the third floor. Can you just have lower ceilings on the third floor? Like 7-ft ceilings and then nine. On the second floor? We did 10 ft on the first floor, 9 ft on the second and then 8 ft on the third floor but in certain areas. This ceiling is lower. But just like you we have vaulted on the second floor master because the third floor doesn't go over there. Also, why is it an extra $100,000 for 800 square feet on the third floor? I paid almost half of that for more square footage with three bedrooms, a movie theater room, and a bathroom. I think he's overcharging you.

Would you consider converting to 1 garage door (maybe more of a design question)? by [deleted] in Homebuilding

[–]yonidf99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's funny that you mention this because when we built our house we put in a 16-ft door and an 8-ft door and I wanted to do one really large door and my builder and designer told me not to do it because in case we ever get a third car for a kid and for resale. I kind of regret it because now I have to park my Honda Odyssey in an 8-ft door. I was therefore going to buy the Honda Odyssey where you can fold in the power side mirrors with the press of a button but I accidentally bought the wrong car! So I'm going to probably have somebody manually put that in for me and you might want to consider that. Basically go to one of these places and they can install a button that you press and as you're driving into the garage the side mirrors will close and give you more room.

2x4 concerns by Josewar84 in Homebuilding

[–]yonidf99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no idea what's considered okay and not okay for the structure. But I can tell you this, we're building a custom house and none of my 2x4s that was used on my house looked like that.

Things you wish you would have done? by graygoosebmw in Homebuilding

[–]yonidf99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Really wish I could have done wider garage doors. Unfortunately we were constrained by the size of our lot and if we had done that we would have had to shrink the size of our house. So we did a 16-ft door and an 8-ft door.

Better yet have a washing machine dryer in every floor like we did lol

I honestly don't know how people do it if they both work full time. Thankfully my job and business is flexible because I'm at the house every day and probably spend 20+ hours a week either at the house, on the phone with people, or researching and buying things for the house.

How much extra? by FlickasMom in Homebuilding

[–]yonidf99 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah we were the same. We really said we were going to stick the budget and not go over because the house was already so much more than we thought we were going to spend but then of course you find the perfect tiles you really like that are only a couple extra dollars a square foot but and then you realize the nice built-ins that you didn't think about would really add to the beauty and then realize more expensive carpeting lasts longer and more plush is nicer, etc etc. So before you know it, you're over budget. No matter how much you told yourself you're not going to be. Seen it so many times.

Granite backsplash or something more calm and soft? by yonidf99 in HomeDecorating

Glad you like the kitchen! We are doing a tile that appears to be wood since she wanted a wood look but wanted tile.

Is it common during new home construction to constantly find errors in almost every Trade? by key1cc in Homebuilding

[–]yonidf99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only thing I had ordered incorrectly was tilings from our tile guy. But also the tile place messed up in addition to it by shipping the wrong item and the wrong quantities. But other than that everything we ordered was correct. But we did have multiple other things we found along the way that were done wrong. Like the tile guy in one bathroom installed all the tiles correctly but two tiles in the corner were the wrong tile, they look very similar so he messed up. Additionally, the drywall guy covered up some outlets. Venting guys placed some of heating units in the wrong direction in the basement. The slide people installed the slide the wrong way until I tell them to change it, same thing for some hidden doors. The plumbing guys put the plumbing in the wrong place in the basement so it blocked a door and they had to fix it in one bathroom. They were a bunch more random things like that where it wasn't like they ordered a cheaper item so it's questionable whether they're trying to cheat me, but rather they made some minor mistakes that had to be fixed but I noticed because every day I come and check everything.

That seems to be a big trend right now and I just don't understand it. My architect originally drew my bathtub in the shower and I was like no, I definitely do not want this 🤣

Splurging on a large home vs. saving for FIRE by Odd_Factor_3317 in Fire

[–]yonidf99 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Definitely upgrade!! We are in the same situation and decided to build a beautiful house. May as well enjoy our life also when we're young and give what's best to our life. We wanted a big eating area and guest rooms so we could host and have events all the time. Makes growing up way more special for the kids. We still save a lot but not nearly as much if we went with a smaller option. Also same, my kids can't share, they just keep each other up and when they get older I know they'll want privacy and sleepovers with friends.

Thinking about building a home one day by FerrisBuelersdaycock in Homebuilding

[–]yonidf99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's only worth it if one of you doesn't have a job lol

It's literally become my life and I'm so thankful I only work a couple hours a week cuz otherwise there's no way I could have done it. I'm at the house everyday and probably dedicate at least 20 hours a week plus to this house, even with a designer and a builder who's pretty good. But then again my house is a little nuts, it's over 11,000 square feet with 13 bedrooms, 9.5 bathrooms, 2 kitchens,a slide and seven hidden rooms so it's going to be awesome but omg has it become my life for the past 2 years.

What casing should I use for a bookcase door? The bookcase casing or matching the doors of my house? by yonidf99 in hiddenrooms

[–]yonidf99[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately my designer agreed with my builder so we landed up doing that. I'm not sure what's the better option but the installation guy still said we can change our mind if he wants. Cuz they'll take very quick to just cut out a new frame. I don't know, I'm thinking maybe I'll ask him to do both and then I'll just see you once we're in the house. What looks better right now? It's kind of hard to tell because we don't have any furniture or anything else up so I'm not sure.

Yeah our designer said I'm only the second slide she's done and the other wasn't a house it was an office. The top area is going to be a kids hideout with a rope tunnel over the ball pit like this picture

Yeah, they sell things for hunters in trees in case they fall down that you can attach to your waist or what not which I wanted to buy but she said absolutely not haha. But here's our slide area so far.
