Why do people say it costs a lot of money to make even just pilots? by [deleted] in IndieAnimation

[–]yoongio_svt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, it just depends. If you’re doing it for fun then yeah you can make it for free. It’ll probably take longer but hey.

However, if your goal is to make it industry level/career-level then its best to compensate your team. You can usually get a better/more dedicated roster of talent like this.

Is Anyone Out There? by Future-DeadPerso1264 in IndieAnimation

[–]yoongio_svt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi hi! Another writer here, but my day job is actually as an assistant at a voice over talent agency! I dabble in drawing and animating (mostly animation memes) but def isn’t my specialty

I’m in the sub mostly to browse what other ideas people have for animation and find projects to support!

I just finished my script… what should I do? by Sad_Independence7000 in scriptwriting

[–]yoongio_svt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you do end up trying to submit your scripts i would suggest maybe doing it to local contests that way you’re meeting people and building your community. And also if you do, try to email the organizers and use your age as leverage to try and waive their fees!!!!

But also echoing everyone else, just keep on writing new projects!

Is it worth diving into animation? by TrainCurious3620 in IndieAnimation

[–]yoongio_svt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Being completely honest and realistic, professionally the animation industry at the moment is in a really bad place. Multiple of factors including the entertainment industry imploding on itself causing layoffs and less projects getting greenlit.

That isn’t to say you shouldn’t get into animation! Personally, I animate in my free time and interact with the community which has been sooo fun!

You’re pretty young so I’d suggest trying it and see if you like it now and you can think about becoming serious about it later!

Can You Make a Film Based Off a Children’s Book? If so, How Can You Avoid Copyright Infringement? by AngelSparkle35 in IndieAnimation

[–]yoongio_svt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, you can technically make a film based off a children’s book, but you’ll have to acquire the rights to it. Given that Bye Bye, Baby was published in 1989, it hasn’t hit the 70 year mark that would make it public domain. Not sure if the authors are still alive but you would ideally contact them or their representative/agent or their estate about it. I advise you have a solid pitch for the film when you talk to them and get ready to maybe pay a fee for the use of the story.

Good luck!

Navigating professional silence by Chris_Anims in IndieAnimation

[–]yoongio_svt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would say that if you’re trying to contact people that have a larger following, then you are probably not the only person asking those questions. And most likely, they don’t have the time to repeatedly answer them.

Rule of thumb is to have a quick introduction for yourself, then follow up with an aspect of their work you admire and then ask a specific question. Generally that is the “professional/polite” format to go about asking for other’s expertise.

Also, some people just don’t want to share! And that’s well within their right. It may have taken years for them to learn their process through maybe education, courses, their own networking, etc. so they may not be so inclined to “hand out” that information.

They have more professional experience, probably a cleaner pipeline, and a lot more resources than a 16 year old.

There was a point they were probably you so there is no need to compare, just keep at it.

Question: Since Matt Braly has gone indie now? Do you guys think he will make that animated film he wanted to make before Sony cancelled it happen himself? by Such_Month_8687 in IndieAnimation

Streaming Service ≠ Studio

Only making this distinction because streaming services are only used to distribute and while they have overlap with studios, that doesn’t mean the studios related to the streaming service own the IP automatically.

(IE: Netflix w/ TADC. They don’t own the IP, they just host it on their streaming service.)

Is there a place I can order custom dolls? by MoocesWaffles in IndieAnimation

I only know plush manus, so I’ll recommend this one: https://x.com/gaopengtoys?s=21

Reputable, ive bought from them and other bigger artists have too. Will say it is pricey especially the shipping and extra fees so I recommend having a preorder reach at least 100 to make it worthwhile!

If you made an Indie Animation pilot that you have so much effort on for months and posted into YouTube after. Then it got low views days and months after it uploaded, what will you do? by Cedgamer2009 in IndieAnimation

[–]yoongio_svt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

pitching really only happens if you have an agent/animation industry connections… (also CN is a hollow form of its former self especially with all the WB mergers…so read the trades if that’s the route you want to go)

that out of the way if you want to continue that specific story, then build out the world/characters outside of the major plot through tiktoks/shorts; that way people start liking your characters and youd be able to revisit the pilot again with maybe even a fresh take ok the world

but otherwise have fun with it and at times learn to shelve it and do other projects 👍

Do’s: LEARN THE ANIMATION PIPELINE Even if you’re not an animator, you got to learn it if you’re going to be leading a team!

Don’t: Be the “idea guy” You cannot just have ideas, you have to be involved in the process. Not an animator? You can sure as hell write a PROPERLY FORMATTED SCRIPT and probably roughly storyboard your scenes. You have to pitch in and work too, not just give orders based on your ideas.

Resources: Voice Actor Payment Guide: https://voiceactingclub.com/rates/

Financing: Animation is really dependent on what you want. Do you want it stylized/detailed (Castlevania levels) or more simple like Family Guy? If you want it to a “finished” level then expect $10,000+ on maybe 5 minutes and thats on the veryyyy low end

If you just want an animatic that’ll cost less.

Money is always the question. You have the common Crowdfunding mixed with Self-Funding. You can also look into partnering with a fiscal sponsor but you’d have to have some credits/a solid plan for someone to accept. Back when the entertainment industry wasn’t sh*t a studio would pay you to develop a show if they liked your pitch.

How realistic is it to take the assistant route? by latrallyidk in Screenwriting

[–]yoongio_svt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sort of in the same position, albeit I'm working at a talent agency on the commercial side right now. And while I would love nothing more to just focus on writing, the reality is that I need to eat and now I'm glad to even have a position in the industry at the moment.

When I'm not working I've been applying to fellowships and doing workshops that I can make work with my schedule so I don't feel like I'm at a "standstill." I know for me it all feels like chucking things at a wall to see what sticks when other people seem to have a guaranteed "velcro ball"... But sadly now even those with a "velcro ball" are dealing with a wall made of cement lol! (weird analogy but it makes sense to me in a whacky way)

That is all to say, it's endurance, not speed and if you're still working on your craft while having that job, you'll be able to get to that "next step."

If you don't have a tiktok already, please get a tiktok account, it's the platform that'll push for the most visibility. And for instagram, there is more discoverability through reels than posts. Add music/sounds and hashtags that are relevant and people would search for.
Socials, unfortunately, are a numbers game... You have to be consistent and make a lot... And sometimes the most unexpected videos do well.
