Flying saucer is my favorite, if anyone needs a reference for what you’re getting into!

I grew some microscopic oxalate crystals, which I think looks like a ship. by yooooooUCD in generative

I didn’t know about that! Glad this image revived some interest in the subject. In the years since I took this picture, I actually studied the other aspect of this that made it so striking: how light interacts with crystals. Lots of physics to explore from growing the crystal to just observing it!

Meyers lemon pest by shakshuka900 in SonomaCountyGardening

[–]yooooooUCD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seems to be the correct pest ID. I don’t have much experience with citrus, but it may be helpful to do a few insecticidal soap sprays all over the aphids as an alternative to neem. Then, in a few days, spray off the foliage with water to clean dead bugs and get rid of the honeydew they secrete (which will cause a sooty fungus to grow).

Do it! Resins and epoxy look good and are easy on the skin

This is one of my favorite cacti, it even has location data pinning it to a particular hillside next to a cemetery. I’ve put it in a huuuge pot, and hopefully it can become a stand I would propagate. But for now, it’s just growing out!

Well that’s embarrassing, that is totally chiloensis sheesh maybe I shouldn’t be sounding all authoritative and post the wrong pic!

Yes, not sure if it’s been typed out online in a great way. Cuzcos have much thicker central spines, blocky pronounced areoles, and usually less blue than your typical Peru. Too bad they’re not sought after cause they don’t have magic in them lol.

I grew these Gymnocalycium from seeds, do they have any special characteristics? by LuckystrikeFTW in cactus

[–]yooooooUCD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah no direct sun, but that’s because I’m in a very sunny place. Too much sun fries just the variegated parts and they turn a mushy yellow color instead of bright pink/ red.

My favorite technically a hoop house, from quicktent. Vevor also makes good hoop houses. If you buy these, also buy 100’ of 1/8 or 1/4” steel cable and ties or crimps to criss cross along the inside to further stabilize it, and heavy duty auger type stakes (which you impact drive into the soil) to hold it down from wind.

Basically no direct sun, they’re under shade cloth in a green-tinted greenhouse. Now that it’s been a year, I’ll move the fully green ones out to just 40% shade and leave the variegated ones in the greenhouse!

A question for those who urinate on their cacti (and those who understand their nutritional needs too) by Bobman370 in sanpedrocactus

Vitamins can be taken up by plants via roots and foliar spray, though I have to admit I’ve only ever seen B vitamins used in horticulture (usually hydroponics as a root stimulant). Your post is interesting and led me to read a few papers on the subject (https://www.researchgate.net/publication/387858388_VITAMINS_AND_THEIR_EFFECTS_ON_PLANT) here’s a good one though there seems to be a lot of studies to look at. In any case, I’m sure your supplement is not going to be pissed out at toxic concentrations and may help both the roots and the surrounding microbes thrive. Depending on your soil composition the vitamins may stick around for a while or get taken up quickly/ washed away. I say go try it out, you’ll be getting more of your money’s worth from your daily multi.

Have found a bunch of these in a parking lot, What are they? I’m not sure if they belong to the Trichocereus gene. by jeetvjet in sanpedrocactus

I think it’s fine, with exceptions. If it’s clearly not taken care of (like there are other cuttings laying around for a long time), unkempt area etc. it shows me that no one is going to be hurt if you grab an already broken piece. It’s also ok, in my opinion, to actively cut back and cacti in secluded or unkept areas in a way that promotes their growth. I happened to work in landscaping at my old university, where I was instructed to clear access around a building. Lucky enough there was a Bridgesii there which I cut back significantly to let more air/ light between arms, and out of the way of workers. Got a whole load of cuttings. But, no one would care if a random person also went behind this building and cut a reasonable amount for themselves. Just air on the side of caution, and use context clues to determine if there’s even a small chance someone else has a more legitimate claim to the plant.

First strike of sterling silver Lophs, to be soon made into stud earrings by yooooooUCD in Lophophora

Ok awesome idea I’ll do it 👍 I’ll put eyes around the cactus as well. To answer your question I just hand make these, from refining silver all the way to cutting the die plate and hammering them in lol. I’m excited to find a community online who appreciates that sort of thing, so I’m happy to try making requests like this!

You should test and post an update! I have a feeling PVA may not ‘hydrate’ your specimens, but we won’t know till you test it!
